hey folks today i'm going to teach you
the absolute best way
to share large video files with others
that's coming up next on tech talk
america
one of the things that i love about my
job and making youtube videos is when i
get to have an experience that i can
then
translate into a teachable moment for
all of you at home
i recently volunteered to make a
gofundme video
to help save a local entertainment venue
from closing
here in palm springs california due to
covid if you've never heard of it the
purple room has a vibrant history
and is probably best known as the place
where frank sinatra
sammy davis jr and dean martin first
formed
the rat pack act in the process of
making this gofundme video i ended up
receiving a ton of video messages
from different celebrities who live all
over the country including lucy arnez
billy stritch liz callaway sam harris
kim novak and many more during the
editing process
i discovered that some of the videos
that i received look really crisp and
clear
whereas other videos that were shot on
almost identical equipment
looked heavily distorted to try to
figure out what happened to the video
quality i did a little test where i shot
a simple video of myself
using my iphone which i then airdropped
onto my mac
that file was 144 megabytes but when i
took that
same video file and sent it to myself
through a text message
the file size dropped to only 40
megabytes
that means that if you send a video file
using the wrong method
you are looking at around a 60
degradation in quality
and when you consider the fact that most
front-facing cameras these days
only shoot at 720p or maybe 1080p
that's not good so whatever you do do
not
send a video as a text message not only
because it's not going to look great
but because those files add up over time
so now that we've identified the problem
let's get to the solution
for starters anytime you want to film
yourself i
always recommend that you film yourself
in landscape mode
not portrait mode the big reason behind
this is if you send a video that is shot
in portrait mode to an editor
aka this guy that person has a lot of
extra work ahead of them because they
either have to add a
background or they have to mirror the
image on each side
and adding a blur sort of like what you
see on the news
and by the way if you are trying to
accomplish that type of an effect that i
just described
i do actually have a tutorial video on
how to accomplish it in final cut pro
when you're done filming your message
you're going to go into the photos app
and then tap
select here at the top right it should
also be noted that if you have
multiple videos that you're trying to
send this allows you to share all of
them
using one link now let's tap the share
button at the bottom left
and on this next screen we're going to
scroll down just a little bit
and tap on where it says copy icloud
link
now all you have to do is paste that
link into a text message
or an email and finally i strongly
recommend that you send that file
only when your phone is both receiving
power and
also connected to wi-fi if you're
curious and want to see the final cut of
the gofundme video that i made you're
welcome to click on the little card icon
that just appeared above my head
thank you so much for watching everyone
if you enjoyed this video if you learned
something today i really appreciate if
you simply hit that thumbs up like
button
leave me a little well constructed
feedback down below in the comment
section
and if you haven't already done so
