hi there in this video i'm going to show
you 15 hidden features your kindle can
do
that you probably had no idea i could do
let's jump right into it one thing i
never knew that kindle can do is
actually take screenshots just like your
phone can
this is very useful when you're reading
a book and you want to capture something
that you're reading
or say it's a setting that you want to
share with a friend it's really easy to
do
all you have to do is press the bottom
left corner in the top right corner
at the same time and when you do that
you'll see the screen flash for a second
and the screenshot has been taken and
the way you access the screenshot now is
by plugging it in via usb to your
computer
and when a kindle comes up on the finder
all you have to do is click on that
you'll see all your screenshots right
away right in the first folder now i
know the kindle is really meant for
reading books
but if you really wanted to all the
kindles have something called an
experimental
browser and if you want to browse the
web you can actually open up the browser
and go to any website that you want
here's how you do it you go to your home
screen on the top right you press the
three dots on the three dot menu
you'll see an option for experimental
browser apparently this browser option
has been there in experimental version
of it for the past
10 years or something like that and they
just never really move
past the experimental version but if you
really want to you can press the url bar
at the top and you go to apple.com or
whatever website you want and it'll take
a minute or two but it will load
and you can use it as a regular web
browser i don't know about you but
sometimes when i'm reading on my kindle
i completely lose track of time
and the default feature on the kindle is
the clock is not going to be showing
while you're reading the book you can
actually have the clock come up
while you're reading and always be there
again just like a phone or ipad the
clock on the top here's how you do it
open a book then you go to the
formatting options where you would go
for the font or the size of the font
things like that then under the more
menu
you'll see an option over here for show
clock while reading
when you turn this on right away you'll
see the time appear
at the middle of the screen at the top
now you have a kindle oasis this setting
is going to be really useful for you
if you read at night you may notice the
screen brightness
is getting really bright even as your
eyes adjust the darkness
there's actually a really cool setting
that will automatically lower the
brightness of your screen
as your eyes are adjusting to the dark
environment it's called night light
and the way you get to it is going to
the settings device options
display settings and then turning on the
night light setting over here
one of the first settings i changed on
my kindle when i got this thing
was turning off all the recommendations
that show up
on my home screen and they don't make it
easy to do this it's actually buried
really deep in the settings
here's how you do it you open up the
settings menu all settings and once
you're in here you want to go to the
device
options menu at the very bottom of this
you'll see advanced options and then in
this menu you want to go to home
and library and over here all we want to
do here is turn off the home screen
view and now all you're going to see on
your home screen are the books that you
actually have bought and downloaded to
your device one thing i've been taking
more seriously across all my apps and
devices is privacy
and one thing about the kindle that i
learned is they're actually tracking
every single thing you do on the kindle
every button you press every gesture you
do with your finger
the kindle is tracking this and amazon
can use this information
for marketing purposes there's actually
a setting you can turn off
that'll prevent this information from
being used for marketing purposes
let me show you where that button is if
you go back in the settings over here
all settings and once you're in here you
want to go down to device options
advanced options and then privacy right
over here you want to disable the
privacy option
so they aren't taking your information
and using it for marketing purposes
depending on your personal preferences
you may be somebody who really enjoys
dark mode
the cool thing is the kindle actually
has a light mode which is on by default
but it also has a dark mode if you go to
the settings menu on the top
right away you'll see the button for
dark mode appear when you press this
button the whole screen
basically inverts the white becomes
black and black becomes white if you
open up a book for example you'll really
see the difference over here the whole
background is black and the text becomes
white if that is something you prefer
you have that option available to you
one really helpful feature the kindle
has is emailing pdfs
to your kindle so you can read them on
your kindle this is great for things
like ebooks that you may buy on your
computer
that come in a pdf format you can just
email them to your kindle
turning this feature on is a little bit
hard at first but it's not that bad let
me walk you through it
the first thing you want to do is go to
your computer and log on to amazon.com
my k this will bring you to the kindle
management section of the amazon website
once you're on there you're going to
want to go to the preferences section
and then personal document settings
before you can start emailing stuff to
your kindle
you first have to add your email address
as an approved sender to the kindle list
over here this prevents random people
from sending stuff to your kindle
you have to approve your email address
before it'll allow those emails to go
through so add in your email address as
an approved sender and now you'll be
able to see
your kindle email address appear over
there as well and you can just start
emailing things
to this address and it'll automatically
upload them to your kindle one
important trick that i want to mention
over here if you enter the word convert
in the subject line as you email them to
your kindle
it'll convert the pdf to a kindle format
so you can take advantage of the
features like font sizes
the font itself all those amazing kindle
formatting options
that you normally wouldn't get with a
regular pdf convert in the subject line
but make that available to you
if you have the kindle oasis you might
be holding the kindle in different
orientation at times
and when you do this the page turn
buttons are inverted
there's actually a setting you could
change to reverse the option
so the next button is actually the
bottom one and the top one is the
reverse button
or vice versa here's how you do that you
go to your settings you go to reading
options and then you have the section
for page turn buttons again
only available on the oasis model but
over here you can change it between the
default or the reverse option
one really cool feature about the kindle
that i just recently discovered is the
ability to loan books to your friends
so they can borrow a book that you
bought on your kindle here's how you do
it you actually have to go to the kindle
website
amazon.com my k go to the content
section
on this list of books next to each one
you'll see three dots when you press on
the three dots not every single book
will have this option but some of them
will have the option that says loan this
title when you press the button to loan
this title you'll be brought to a page
where you can enter the email address of
your friend
and the cool thing is the friend that
you're emailing it to doesn't have to
have a kindle basically once they get
your email
and they accept the loan from you
they'll have access to the book that you
sent them
for 14 days and depending on the book
that time period may be a little
different
but it seems like the default option is
14 days
but you could only loan the book once
just keep that in mind you can't loan
the book out to 10 different friends
every single month of the year you have
14 days for one friend to use it
and while they have the book you can't
read the book so only one person can be
using the book at one time chances are
you don't only read on your kindle you
probably read a lot on your computer too
especially different blogs or articles
and you may have come across a time
where you wish you could read these
things on your kindle surprisingly it's
really easy to do that if you use google
chrome there's actually an extension you
can download called
save to kindle link for that down below
if you want to install that but once you
install that extension you can send
articles
directly from chrome to your kindle by
pressing one button
and even if you don't use chrome they
actually have different apps you can
download on your computer that send
things to your kindle
very very handy if you want to read
articles on your kindle
that you normally would read on your
ipad or your computer if you live at
home with multiple people in your house
you may want to add a passcode to your
kindle the last thing you want is a
random person in your home picking up
your kindle
and then adjusting where you left off in
your book or just messing around with it
adding a passcode could help prevent
that the way you do that is go to your
settings and then all settings
and once you're in here you want to go
to device options and right away
you'll see the option for device
passcode you can enter in a passcode
just like your phone
now we all love the kindle because of
the e-ink display but because of that
technology sometimes there's a ghosting
effect
what i mean by that is if you're reading
a page and you change the page
sometimes you'll still see some faded
ghost of the previous page
on the page that you're reading now and
by default every six page turns
it'll wipe all the ghosting effect and
do a page refresh but there's actually a
setting you could turn on that'll
actually do a page refresh
every single time you change the page
the only problem by doing this
is you are risking a faster battery
drain
just keep that in mind if you turn this
on here's how you do it though you go to
the settings and then all settings
and then you go to the reading options
section and over here you want to turn
on the first option for
page refresh again do this at the risk
of losing battery faster
but it will help with keeping the text
nice and sharp as you read if your
kindle is struggling with battery life
one really cool way to extend the
battery life is by turning on
airplane mode the way you do this is
going to the settings menu and just
turning on airplane mode it's really
easy this is a great way
to extend battery life it will turn off
all the syncing features
you can't download new books or go to
the store but if you don't do that very
often which you probably
aren't this feature will actually extend
the battery life on your kindle by a lot
one of the best things about reading is
you can actually expand your vocabulary
by learning new words and the kindle
makes it really easy to do that
they have a built-in feature called the
vocab builder first thing is first
before you can use this feature you have
to turn it on and the way you do that is
by going to the settings and then
all settings and once you're in there
you go to reading options and turn on
the vocabulary builder once you have
this setting turned on
it'll remember every single time you
look up a word in the dictionary
by pressing and holding on a word while
you're reading it'll remember
all these words that you're researching
and add them to your vocab builder
feature once you've had the kindle for a
while and you've added a bunch of words
to your vocab builder
next time you're reading a book press
the three dots on the top right
make sure you're already in a book
before you do this otherwise you won't
see this option press the three dots
and press the button for vocabulary
builder and now you'll see
all the words that you've looked up in
the past and you can quiz yourself to
learn the definitions of them
and just build a memory of all the words
you've looked up thanks so much for
watching if you enjoyed this video
you'll probably like my other video
where i talk about my system
for taking notes on my kindle it's a
really cool system that actually emails
me my highlights
every single day so i can actively
review them check that video out link on
the screen right now
thanks so much for watching i'll see you
next time
