[Music]
everybody welcome back to my garage
let's talk about an often overlooked
part of your car it's actually pretty
important talking about door seals also
known as weatherstripping door seals are
usually made of like a neoprene
synthetic rubber and it goes between the
door and the sill or a part of the body
to prevent air leaks and if you don't
maintain them over time they'll dry out
get brittle and crack and this is all
depending on a number of factors
including hot and cold environments it's
winter across the u.s. right now as I
make this video I'm sorry to say and
winter is never easy on vehicles one
thing that always happens in the winter
is your car doors freezing shut and if
you try to pull the door open you can
damage or even rip the door seal that's
gonna cost you money to fix and if you
don't fix it that'll lead to water leaks
and into your interior which brings its
own set of problems now I used to use
wd-40 everybody's friend before every
winter to keep my door seals from
freezing and drying out but that might
not have been the best idea see wd-40 is
good for a lot of things but not
everything no no I know that to some
those might be fighting words but hear
me out for one thing you don't want to
use wd-40 on anything that you want to
keep clean you know like your car it
attracts dirt and dust wd-40 also
contains petroleum distillates which is
flammable and can break down certain
elements now I know that it's flammable
because we used to actually use wd-40 as
a propellant for our potato guns when we
were kids but that's another video
entirely but because it also displaces
water everybody knows that's what the WD
and wd-40 stands for it can actually dry
out your door seals faster this is
especially bad if you have a frameless
door like what's on my Corvette here now
there's been reports of wd-40 also
eating rubber parts as well I don't know
how true that really is when it comes
down to it but it's not something that I
want to take a chance on I always say
that whenever possible use a specific
tool for a specific job I mean you spend
a lot of time and money on your car so
it's a good idea in most cases to spend
a few more bucks on something that's
designed as a solution to this specific
problem I did some research and I got
pointed to the gummy flag I yep that's
how it's pronounced and it's made in
Germany and it's been around for over
thirty years
I picked up this bottle from Amazon for
just a little under 12
dollars to use instead of wd-40 for my
door seals and here's why first of all
it's water-based it's not silicon based
which means that won't attract dirt and
it won't dry your door seals out in fact
it's specifically formulated for rubber
products like door seals as well as
anything under the hood like rubber
hoses which I wouldn't want to use wd-40
on and I say that because I know a lot
of people do in fact the name gummy
flaga translated to english means rubber
care now it's not only good for cleaning
door seals but will actually rejuvenate
dry and crack door seals and it comes in
this sponge tip applicator bottle which
makes it extremely easy to apply and I'm
going to show you how first wipe down
the seals with a wet rag or a paper
towel so you can remove any dust or dirt
from the surface and to prevent the foam
applicator from getting dirty which can
start to ruin the foam applicator and
then you just want to dry the seals with
a microfiber towel so once dry you want
to shake the bottle and then you want to
press it into the seal with the foam
applicator and you don't want to squeeze
the bottle because it might make the top
pop off and then just kind of run it
along there just like that
it's as easy as you think it would be
give it a little time to soak in and
then just use a microfiber towel to take
off any excess
by the way try not to get in on any pain
or any glass because it'll leave a bit
of a residue because it can't soak into
paint like it does a door seal and even
if you do get any on it you can just
wipe it off with a microfiber towel it
shouldn't be so bad at all and you can
clean the foam applicator by just
popping the top off and rinsing it with
some soap and water and you're good to
go again now this is one of those things
that every car owner should do but
doesn't always think about it until it's
too late when they rip the door seal off
trying to get in their car in the
wintertime or when they here are really
loud annoying whistling sound when
they're going down the road and don't
forget there's more seals than just door
seals on your car you can use this on
some roof seals hood and trunk seals and
even around the house like on your
refrigerator door seals and your
dishwasher door seals it's pretty
affordable just under 12 bucks on
average got a link in the description
below on where you can get yours it's
where I get mine and I really hope that
this video helps save your door seals or
bring them back to life if that's the
case thanks for hanging out my garage
