hey there fellow travelers mark you with
Walters world we're in Stockholm Sweden
in front of the City Hall and today
we're going to talk about the most
expensive or at least possibly most
expensive part of your trip your phone
bill and today we're going to talk about
is basically what you should do for your
phone when you travel now one of the
things I recommend is if you are going
to travel talk to your phone provider
your cell phone provider and ask them if
they have any international plants now
I'm from the US and I use AT&T and AT&T
has multiple plans out there third for
30 bucks I get you know a dollar minute
phone calls free texting and 120 Meg's
of data for 120 dollars I get 800 Meg's
of data free texting in 35 cents a
minute Verizon has a different program
t-mobile has a different program and
really talk to your mobile phone
provider before you go and buy a package
because it's not necessarily going to be
the texting and the phone calls that are
going to kill you it's the data okay 1
Meg if you're not on a plan 1 Meg could
be $1 and literally I got off of a plane
I'd call before I left got my data plan
but for some reason wasn't turned on
alright we were landed in Stockholm at 7
in the morning okay but the time I got
got the plane the plane turned on my
phone and before I got to customs I had
a text message from AT&T saying I'd
already spent over a hundred dollars I'm
like all I did was check my email and
put a Facebook post up to say hey we got
here safe a hundred dollars so I had
called AT&T right away and said hey I
have this plan they got it all set up
but that's one of the things is get that
plans but make sure you're checking to
make sure it's in effect because I would
have had a really bad experience and a
friend of mine she literally she went to
Eastern Europe for a week came back had
an 800 dollar bill okay so make sure you
call your phone company and ask them
what plans they have now the thing is
not all cell phone providers and mobile
phone providers have international plans
okay we have friends that don't have
that so what are your options then well
one of the things you can do is buy an
unlock phone and buy a SIM card a little
chip to put in the phone when you do
travel and you can get a different one
in every country you go to the problem
with that is if you're going to lots of
different countries you can't always
refill up the phone for example if I get
a chip in Portugal I can only fill it up
in poor
at the kiosk there I can't go to Germany
and fill it up from there and that can
be a problem so what you can do is you
can buy an international phone okay and
it'll have a chip that works everywhere
and a phone number you can call and use
your your credit card to top-up that
phone
okay another thing that people can do is
they like to get what's called a duo
phone or a dual phone that actually
could put two chips in so you can have
your phone from home and then get
another chip while you travel just fit
in there now the problem with doing
getting a chip and putting in your
normal phone is most phones you buy from
AT&T or Verizon or t-mobile their phones
are locked to their service so you can't
have an AT&T phone take the chip out and
then go get a Vodafone chip here in
Sweden now that's not going to work
because it won't be accepted by the
program so that can be a problem okay so
options call your mobile phone provider
see if they have a plan to get another
phone another side phone for it and get
a chip for that we're get a chip for
your phone if it's unlocked
other things you might want to know
about making phone calls when you are
abroad is one in Europe there's not a
lot of coin phones a lot of our card
phones if they have public telephones so
what you want to do is you go to a kiosk
and ask to buy a phone some of it has a
little chip in it you put it in other
ones you swipe other ones you dial a
number but there's all kinds of options
out there some of these you can get in
the airport before you fly all kinds of
stuff another thing in terms of at the
airport those phones those international
phones and chips a lot of airports will
have a Best Buy vending machine or some
kind of vending machine where literally
you can buy a phone right there I was in
Newark on our way over here there was a
Best Buy kiosk I could go and buy a
phone there that will work in the US or
work abroad when I flew into Copenhagen
they had one in the luggage claim they
had a one there where can i buy the
phone that works in Copenhagen no
problem the other things you need to
worry about when you are here is when
you do travel make sure if you don't if
you're not using your data make sure you
turn off the data plan okay so go in
your phone and turn off data so it's not
leeching off stuff maybe it's checking
your emails or the weather automatically
turn it off so you only use the data
when you need it for example if you're
using the Google map functions so you
can find the sites that's well we're
spending your money on not Angry Birds
sending you a commercial okay so make
sure you turn those things
all right and when you argue how do you
have your phone so you can set the Wi-Fi
and a lot of countries in Europe here in
Sweden Wi-Fi is all over the place and
it's free other places Portugal
sometimes a little harder to get but you
can still find it out the hotels and in
lobbies so make sure you use the Wi-Fi
smartly and turn off your data when
you're not using it otherwise it'll eat
through your data like crazy okay
now some other issues you might have
with your phone is the charging okay USB
you got it plugged in here you got your
USB what's cool is USB ports are the
same everywhere in the world so you can
plug it into the HDTV at your hotel or
your computer or someone else's computer
you'll be fine
also when you do have it you know you
have your normal plug you're going to
have to use a converter but what's cool
with your phones they're already ready
to rock and roll with the plot with
electricity here in Europe or in the US
or in Asia and so you can just have the
plug that changed it differently so I
have a plug that works in the US with a
tool like this I have another one in
Europe that works in like this and it's
okay but make sure you bring your cords
because here when you travel the cords
and these kind of things are a lot more
expensive in Europe than they are in the
US or the US you go bite it you know
Walgreens for five bucks here it's a bit
more okay so those are some issues that
I've had while travelling with my phone
because it can be a big budget buster
when you go I've seen people really get
nailed out there oh I'm getting a phone
call right now cost me 35 cents a minute
anyway I'll answer this phone call you
have a great time here in Sweden all
right cool Mike so that phone call right
there which was five minutes at five
minutes if I had the dollar one that's
five bucks if I don't have it it could
be fifteen dollars on the plan I have it
was only a dollar fifty okay so make
sure you don't get stuck paying major
phone bills when you do travel now if
you want to learn more of a to save
money while you travel we do have a
video on that if you want that click up
over here and if we also have a video
how to save money so you can travel
that's over here anyway I hope you have
a good time phoning home also of course
you can use all the internet phone
things like Skype and Google Talk to
talk that way which works just fine as
well but anyway I hope you have a great
time traveling talking seen selfing all
those things with your phone but not
getting gorged on the prices and the
call
so you have for your phone while you
travel anyway have a great time I'll see
you later bye from Stockholm
