so we have a 2000 lexus rx300 and three
times over the past month the steering
wheel is a locked up as we're driving so
I did a little bit of research and
apparently the safety feature that has
the lock is engaging while we're driving
very dangerous and here's the fix that I
found for it links up to the steering
column right there and there's a pan
right here that is supposed to retract
when the key is in the on and start
position when I do it now it works let's
go on and you'll see this disappear boom
disappears but for some reason it pops
out just like this when we're driving so
then if the steering wheel moves to the
other side if the steering wheel moves
turns enough boom it'll fit right into
that slot right there causing the
steering column to lock up this is
designed as an anti-theft device so that
if somebody Hotwire's these older style
cars the steering wheel locks up into
position and makes it non drivable I'm
just gonna remove the feature altogether
the newer cars don't have the feature
anyways so now I have to decide how I'm
gonna get this pin come back out I'm
gonna get this pin to stay in so now
that it's off I could maybe do a little
weld or solder right over the top of
that but it was not it wasn't friendly
to get these out you can see if my
camera will focus you can see here that
I had to drill these bolts out because
there's no head on the drill there's no
way to get a tool on there to remove
these bolts try to drill them out from
the backside because I have this area to
work in vs up here when it was all it
was too tight taxes from the other side
so what I'm gonna try to do right now
for people who have to do this in the
future I'm going to with a with the key
on
so it's retracted I'm gonna try to drill
a hole right here and see if I can pin
this thing in place to give you guys the
opportunity to do that without having to
go through the whole trouble of removing
the whole thing let's see if it works
you can see right here I just tried it
again so that I can put this try the pin
technique and cars on and the pin is
still up so retract at that time but it
was slower I did it again before and it
won't retract at all
[Music]
whatever solenoids in here seems
energized now so it's retracting a
little bit faster but it's going out I
don't know if it's one of these boxes on
the back or if it's inside here but
there should definitely be a recall for
this Lexus you guys need to do better
this is not acceptable for this to
happen
[Music]
so hypothetically leave that guy in
there if I wanted to sacrifice a bit and
my steering wheel I was taking this
whole thing apart guys all you have to
do is drill a little hole right here and
you can sacrifice a bit leave it in
there or put something else in there if
you wish I'm all the way through right
here and that's the easy fix
be a lot easier than taking the whole
damn thing apart but that's your easy
fix if your steering wheel is locking up
will not unlock you got to get it to
unlock to retract this thing but if
you're able to do that and it's just
faulting out get it to retract and then
drill your hole through it alright hope
this helped somebody out there if it
does go and leave me a thumbs up thank
you all peace
