you see this little switch that's called
the ante reverse if I flick that across
it disengages it meaning the reel can go
either way and usually get tangled if I
flick it back it becomes locked so it
only goes forward and not backwards
hence the name ante reverse now my
spinning wheels have an anti reverse
feature some of them have them like this
ci4 strategy has it underneath some of
them have them on the back some of them
have them down the very back here but
what are they there for what why do we
have an anti reverse
[Music]
[Laughter]
last week I was asked by an Instagram
user by the name of Ben gone if I could
answer in my weekly Q&A segment water
used the anti reverse so how I'll use
the anti reverse on a spinning reel I
did answer it and I thought I answered
it well but the answer took up four
minutes I think that was just too big to
begin better than a Q&A so I decided to
do to create an entire YouTube video
related to the anti reverse on a real
now the anti reverse is just another way
of controlling the tension on the line
there's three ways of controlling
tension
you see when a fish hooks up it puts
tension on the line it pulls the line
tight if it pulls it too tight it snaps
the line and that's why we have these
three ways to adjust the tension to stop
it pulling too tight the first and the
most commonly used one is the drag if a
fish pulls out you can hear the drag
going in but I actually have my drag
said quite tight I like to have it tight
because I rely a lot more on the ante
reverse and I'll go into that more in
detail shortly so the first method of
controlling how much tension is on the
line when you hook a fish is with your
drag the second method involves lifting
and lowering your rod tip if you've got
a fish on and you've got it whole you're
holding that really high like this and a
fish pulls you can lower the rod to
absorb some of that tension and then
once the fish stops head shaking and
kicking it and lift it back up again
lifting winding lifting winding that
also helps you with the tension and the
third and the one I prefer to use the
most is the anti reverse now the ante
reverse when it is on right now I cannot
reel that backwards when I turn it off I
can reel it backwards you say that and I
can reel it forward now you can very
easily get tangles in your line by using
the anti reverse so I always store more
more real and when I'm fishing I always
have the anti reverse on so that I can't
reel it backwards by a mistake and get
tangled now I like the anti reverse so
that when I'm fishing and what I'm gonna
do is I'm just going to take that lure
off
I'm gonna hook the line up so that I can
actually do this and show you without
giving a tangle oh yeah now I can show
you properly now that's on
I can't reel that backwards it's got
zero ante reverse in it but I turn it
off
it's off thank you go forward and it can
go backwards now if I'm fishing when I'm
fishing I always have that locked on so
if I'm fishing safer trapped I'm using
for power mine or a big fish and it
really swims if I've got my drags at
right it'll pull drag if the fish starts
swimming towards a logjam where if the
fish gets into the log jam I'm gonna
lose it
so I need to use extra tension more
tension than I'm comfortable with if I'm
using the drag I have to either put my
finger on the spool or reach around and
quickly tighten the drag in the hope
that doesn't break the line then when we
get away from the logs and back in
towards me I can reach around and loosen
the drag a little bit to give it a bit
more space so if a tight net loosen it
or put my thumb or my index finger sorry
on the spool like that the other way is
to use the anti reverse so if I hook a
fish and it's got plenty of room to play
I can reel it in
then when it starts pulling [ __ ]
quickly I can quickly start reeling it
backwards it's very important that you
keep tension on the line when you do
this because if you look the line gets
slack the hook and fall out of the
fish's mouth and you can create a tangle
on your reel so you can reel it in it's
pulling too hard give it a bit of space
you've got a it's worn out a little bit
you can start reeling it in again then
you can give it a little bit of space
again now this isn't a very common
technique in fact over more laughs of
fishing I've never fished with anybody
else that uses uses this technique but I
do know that this particular technique
of using the anti reverse instead of the
drag is very very popular in some of the
European countries particularly in
England with the carp fisherman the cat
fishermen prefer these over the drag for
the same reasons that I do if you're in
a pond and you're fishing for a big carp
using the anti reverse gives you greater
control say you've got your drag set to
will say 2 kilograms I don't know what
you'd sell it to that's that's just the
number hey guys nothing more than a
number but say it set for 2 kilograms
when there's 2 kilograms of pressure the
drag starts spinning back
that's what you get you get two
kilograms it's consistent the end if you
want to increase that a little bit
because the fish is just swimming too
much then you've got to tighten it a
little bit you've got to reach around
and tighten it using the anti reverse
allows you to increase and decrease the
amount of tension as you go as the fish
is fighting but they're having to make
adjustments but they're having to put
your finger on the spool so it's the
anti reverse is just another mechanism I
do use my drag but I prefer to use the
anti reverse more I can only remember
once having more line snapped boy fish
is in the earlier verse and that was
with a friend of mine by the name of
Matt J you see me I was a brand tree out
of probably sixty centimetres long it
was massive had followed my luring and
hit it at my feet but I bet probably not
even 30 centimetres of line out I didn't
even have time to reach around and flick
the switch it just hit my eel snap and
also that was with your the original
Shimano say I forced Redick in say all
the so I for the before that there was
the FJ series and the FJ series the
switch for the anterior verse was at the
back so I hooked this big fish I've
reach to the back where is that where is
it where is it but time I found at the
fish and snap a line because my drag was
too tight so the only reverse isn't
foolproof but neither is the drag and
it's horses for courses my
recommendation is to get used to both of
them and I'll tell you why because for
years all I ever used was the anti
reverse loved it but then in the early
nineties I decided to start local
casting with bait caster reels and they
don't have an T reverse in fact that's
the thing I like a waste about bait
caster wheels is the fact that they
don't have an anti reverse
I remember I was trawling for for
yellow-belly at Lake Hume with my friend
Brenton richardson there five or six
years ago now I've caught a 62
centimeter yellow-bellied it's my
biggest yellow-bellied today that still
is it was huge
anyway it was pulling like mad and even
with the heavy line I was worried it was
gonna either pull the hook through the
Fisher's lip because there was so much
tension on it or it was gonna snap the
line I was more worried about it pulling
the hook through the Fisher's lip
because I was using very heavy line I
was using 50 pound braid got a 62
centimeter yellow-belly pulls a lot
harder than a 60 centimeter cod I'll
give you the Tim but anyway I was
wishing like mad that all I could use in
any reverse because I got it away from
the snags and I just want her to back up
the tension off a little bit and let it
swim around and tire out
but I couldn't I had to keep adjusting
the drag wall I was wall I was using the
reel and the drag is on the same size
aside as the real so I've got to let go
of the real wishing the drag grab the
real loosen the drag grab the real
thought in the drag it's a pile on the
bum when you could just should be able
to just four million wheel back or
forward wheel back so there you go folks
that's why I use the end universe that
is what it's designed for that's popular
with the course fishermen in other parts
of the world particularly England the
carp fisherman it has got a purpose most
people don't use it particularly here in
Australia it's why use it a lot and I
love it or rely heavily on it and that's
a great feature and I said well I think
it's not a bad thing for you to get used
to you because it can't come in very
handy in those times where you want
maximum control over the fish
