hey guys this is Spencer from pixel &
bracket in this tutorial I'm gonna show
you how to show hidden files on a Mac
Apple has actually added a new shortcut
key in Mac OS Sierra and later which
makes it super easy to show hidden files
but I'll also show you the old terminal
method as well so here we are just on my
desktop and I'm going to show you my
specifications really quick if I go up
to the app icon about this Mac I'm
currently working in Mac OS Sierra I'm
pretty sure they have like high sierra
now or something
I don't know it's free to update but
there may be reasons why you haven't
first I'm going to show you the quickest
fastest way to show hidden files and
that's in Sierra or later okay and then
I'll show you the terminal method that
works in all the other versions of Mac
OS so I'm gonna open up just a folder
finder folder here that's my Macintosh
hard drive right so I've got these
folders that are clearly visible but
there's also some hidden folders in here
to show hidden folders all you need to
do is press shift command period and it
shows those folders really easy really
simple you want to hide them again shift
command period same thing you can just
keep pressing it and it shows them and
it hides them it shows them and it hides
them that's very easy very simple I'm so
glad that Apple added that now maybe
that's not working for you maybe it's
because you're in an older OS maybe you
can't even update maybe you're just old
school maybe refuse to update so let's
let me show you the terminal method that
I would always have to google and figure
out so I've got this text document open
says show hidden files right this right
here this little thingy
you've got to type into the Macintosh
terminal and that will show hidden files
but there's one more thing you have to
do after that so yes to show and then
you changed that to no to hide right so
I'm going to keep it at yes and then we
need to open terminal I can do that by
pressing command spacebar and start
typing in terminal or turn up terminal
or I can go up here and click on this
little
our no not hourglass that's a magnifying
glass icon can click on that and it will
pop open spotlight search or I can go to
applications down to utilities and down
to terminal and double click that and
that opens up my terminal so here's my
terminal what I need to do is take that
file and I'll put this in the
description so you guys could copy-paste
it if you need to so I'm gonna copy that
command C I'm gonna paste it over here
with command V and I'm gonna hit enter
what did that do well it's showing
hidden files but I need to refresh
finder in order for the hidden files to
be shown you see back on Macintosh no
hidden files yet so I need to come down
to my finder I need to hold option and I
need to right-click on it and from there
you'll see this thing called relaunch
and relaunch is what you need to click
and it will relaunch finder and when you
look in there now in Macintosh hard
drive the hidden files are shown now and
the same thing goes to hide them I can
paste delete out the yes hit no hit
enter come down here to find her option
right click relaunch and now when I go
to that Macintosh hard drive those
hidden files are hidden but once again
super easy in Sierra and later shift
command period shift command period so
anyway either of those ways should work
for you the reason you want to show
hidden files varies I mean for me if I'm
working on html5 ads I want to make sure
I delete every last bit of data that I
do not need within a folder structure so
that you know I can make those data
limits when I post that html5 ad you
know we're talking kilobytes here also
sometimes cached files are in hidden
folders and that could be gigabytes and
gigabytes of data that you want to
delete to free up space on your computer
anyway you guys if you learn something
like this video thanks for watching
subscribe for more tips and tutorials
and I'll see you next time
