hello YouTube luma Tona here and welcome
to this episode of game guides where I
will be talking about what causes
squalor in rome total war along with how
to deal with squalor and really kind of
how to prevent it from growing in your
cities so we're going to go ahead and
start off first with what squalor is so
we'll click on a city and to see your
amount of squalor you're going to hit
this show settlement details button here
on the kind of like city build page so
you can hit that and then here you can
see your squalor so in the in this city
in Syracuse I have a pretty high squalor
of sixty-five percent so that's really
you know my public order would be one
hundred and sixty five percent without
it which would let me raise my tax rates
and make more money so squalor is
definitely something that can hurt your
economy in this game for sure so that's
how you see it and squalor basically is
a direct result of the amount of
population you have in a town it seems
to be that the more population you have
the more squalor you have I've done some
research online and no one seems to know
the exact kind of calculations and
formulas that go into that but basically
the higher your population the higher
your population growth and then you know
therefore the more population the faster
squalor is going to grow the more
squalor you're going to have stuff like
that so that pretty much is the basis of
squalor now there are a couple ways you
can kind of deal with it um so I mean
first off you don't want to build
buildings that boost you know your
population growth so building stuff like
forums or markets buildings like that
tends to boost your population see
population grew population growth bonus
of 1% for the great forum so you know
avoiding buildings like that will help
keep your population lower and then will
help keep your squalor lower as well as
you know just knock buildings many farms
I mean I don't think some of the later
farms to population growth bonuses but
some of the early farms give you
population growth bonuses that will you
know increase your population faster and
while that could be very useful in the
early game to be able to upgrade your
settlements and build more buildings
more advanced buildings and you know
train more troops because of that
it will definitely hurt you with squalor
as they you know it will keep growing
the faster your population is growing so
avoiding buildings like that is pretty
important also if you just keep building
buildings in your town if you keep
upgrading your city and kind of keeping
your population growth decently stagnant
that should help with squalor a lot as
well so there are a couple ways that you
can also get rid of squalor once it is
in your city first of all by training
troops like peasants per se you know a
really inexpensive cheap troop if you
just go ahead and you know train a bunch
of peasants over the next bunch of turns
that will use up population in your town
see the population dropped so before I
train these peasants if I take them off
here you can see the population is
twenty thousand six hundred and I have a
65% squalor so here I'm going to add in
a bunch of peasants you know to recruit
and you can see my population dropped by
about a thousand and my squalor stayed
the same so this method isn't really
that great for squalor but it does lower
your population growth which if you do
it enough will it eventually improve
your squalor so that's definitely one
method that you can do also a good thing
you can do with cheap troops like
peasants is you can move them to a town
that needs population so in this
campaign for instance Apollonia here is
pretty low on population it's not
growing that fast because I can tax it
really high so I would move all these
peasants over and Apollonia we're all
disbands them now if you don't have a
town that needs population you know and
you don't want to add to squalor and the
other towns you could always take your
um your peasants and go and fight in a
battle and just let them die in battle
or like you know put them out on a fleet
at sea like a small ship and let it get
sunk so that they die at sea there ways
to kind of get rid of the troops that
way you don't have to pay upkeep on them
and stuff like that even though they're
pretty cheap you know if you have a
bunch and a bunch of units of peasants
they can definitely add up another way
you can deal with it is if basically is
to let the city revolt so you know put
like tax rate all the way up you know go
into your army and move every troop you
have in the city outside the town and I
mean that'll make it you know pretty
upset public order zero so it should
revolt in the next couple turns and when
it revolts
you can then retake the city and when
you retake it you can choose the option
of exterminate settlements which will
kill a large portion of the population
this will not only get you a lot of
money but it will also pretty much push
squaller to almost nothing because
you'll kill a majority of the population
in the city a good kind of key a key
point here when you're laying a city
revolt is if you go into the city and
you destroy the buildings that you have
any military buildings like barracks and
actually don't have any other ones in
the city right now if you destroy any
military buildings then when the city
revolts you'll be fighting a city of
peasants because it will only be able to
revolt with troops that they can train
in the city so if you destroy all your
military buildings you know any archery
ranges any stables any you know barracks
to train infantry or whatever if you
destroy those you'll be fighting a bunch
of peasants to retake the city so that
will be pretty easy um yeah and so that
pretty much sums up the ways you can
deal with squalor in rome total war you
know that kind of covers all the
different ways you can mitigate its
effects and you know how you can avoid
it and also what squalor is so thank you
all very much for watching I hope you
