the term boosted post has been around a
long long time and in that time its
meaning has gotten lost we've gotten
several questions asking what a boosted
post is how to boost a post how to boost
a page etc and something i'm wondering
is if you guys really knew what a
boosted post was would you even want to
be boosting them especially if you guys
knew the alternative so i'm covering
boosted posts on facebook and instagram
and this video and what you need to know
about them

alright so let's start by clarifying the
actual definition of a boosted post
because it gets used incorrectly all the
time facebook says a boosted post is a
post to your page's timeline that you
can apply money to in order to boost it
to an audience of your choosing this is
the simplest way to advertise on
facebook so if you want to boost a post
you're boosting an individual post on
your business page a lot of business
owners use the word boost synonymously
with promote and while yeah we know what
they mean it's not technically correct
you don't boost your facebook page you
run a facebook page like ad to grow your
followers and the reason i'm
highlighting the difference here is
because it's going to matter in a minute
when we start talking about the purpose
of boosted posts and campaign objectives
but before we get into that let's talk
about the difference between boosted
posts and facebook ads facebook says
boosted posts differ from facebook ads
because they are not created in ads
manager and don't have all the same
customization features so in order to
boost a post you have to literally go to
your facebook page or your instagram
page go to the post you want to boost
and hit the blue boost post button but
as facebook said when you do that you
don't get as many features or targeting
options as you do if you do it through
facebook ads manager so now that we know
exactly what boosting a post looks like
let's talk about the purpose behind it
boosted posts optimized for post
engagement meaning the goal of boosting
a post is to get more comments likes and
shares on that post i see a lot of
business owners wanting to boost a post
about their website sale but that's not
going to drive traffic to your website
or get you conversions it's going to get
you post engagement there are several
different facebook ad objectives to
choose from and whichever one you choose
will inform facebook of who to show it
to for instance with a boosted post
since the goal is post engagement
facebook is going to show the post to
people within your target audience who
are likely to engage not necessarily
likely to purchase if you're wanting to
get sales on your website then you need
to run an ad campaign that has a goal of
obtaining sales because the technical
objective for a boosted post is post
engagement so on that note let's take a
look at the different facebook ad
objectives the facebook ad campaign
objectives have updated and therefore
look different than they did here in the
past so let's take a look at these
together you have awareness which is
good for reach brand awareness and video
views
traffic which is good for link clicks
landing page views messenger and
whatsapp and calls
engagement which is good for messenger
whatsapp and instagram direct video
views post engagement and conversions
leads which are good for instant forms
messenger conversions and calls app
promotion which is good for app installs
and app events and lastly sales which
are good for conversions catalog sales
messenger and whatsapp now the
engagement campaign is the closest to a
boosted post but when you do it through
ads manager again you get way more
options so as a professional digital
marketer who's helped countless of small
business owners with their marketing
over the years i have to tell you i've
almost never boosted a post directly
from the page so if post engagement is
truly what you want i would use that
campaign in ads manager and select the
post you're wanting to promote in the ad
level but again if what you really want
is sales then don't use the engagement
campaign use the sales campaign and i
would advise that you take your mouse
and highlight it over these little
information icons because in my opinion
this new layout of the campaign
objective seems a little misleading at a
glance you would think both the
engagement campaign and the sales
campaign get you conversions because
they both say that they're good for
conversions right but when you highlight
the icon for conversions under the
engagement campaign it says get people
to view content contact your business
add to a wish list or take another
action on your website or app when you
highlight the icon for conversions under
the sales campaign it says get people to
add an item to their cart make a
purchase start a subscription or take
another action on your website or app
very different outcomes right we can see
that facebook is not describing the
conversions you may get from an
engagement campaign as the same
conversions you would get from a sales
campaign or even a league campaign where
it says conversions get people to share
their contact information complete a
registration form submit an application
or take another action on your website
or app so think about the true end goal
you're hoping to achieve from facebook
ads or from a boosted post before you
put ad money behind it you want to make
sure the campaign you're selecting
aligns with the results you're hoping to
achieve so with all that in mind what
