hi in this video I'm gonna show you how
to get a table out of a PDF document and
put it into Excel the Pew Research
Center has pretty good articles and
usually they have PDF documents with
tables that can show you this so if I
download this particular PDF document
you'll notice that once it comes up and
I try to find a table in there and try
to copy it into Excel let's try to find
a table here I think in the appendix is
probably a table here this is a good
example you can see that if I try to
highlight areas a table let's highlight
this whole thing here and I just
probably wanted to there ctrl C to copy
and go into Excel and just try to paste
it let's paste it you can see it really
doesn't paste it to well ctrl C to undo
now what we can do is use one of the
other Microsoft applications to kind of
be an intermediary a middleman to do
this and that's going to be word so what
I need to do first is save the file the
PDF file in my local directory and then
use word to open it up so I can just go
into here and save it and I'm gonna save
it now it's opened up the save as window
I'll just save it and it's gonna save it
in the Downloads folder and click Save
and once that's saved I'm gonna use word
to open it up and what words gonna do is
it's going to convert it from the PDF
format into one that is edible in Word
so all I need to do is open I'm just
kind of type ctrl o to open the bring up
the open window and look for that
particular file so this is the file that
I saved double click that to open and
you notice that it's gonna ask you it's
going to tell you that it's gonna take a
while it's going to try to open up the
PDF file
okay and it will go through the process
of converting the PDF into a viewable
format in Word now you can see that it's
opened it lets it open it in protective
view I'm gonna enable editing and it's
gonna have this let's just click this
don't show message again and all I need
is that particular table you can see
that it converted its going to the
process it went to the process of
converting it and all I need to do is
find that table let's click on the
one-page view and look for that table
let's see if it's down here somewhere I
think that was it that I just passed
let's see appendix all right so I just
take this and ctrl C to copy go back
into Excel and just paste it with the
destination formatting you see here it's
much better right so that's kind of the
Cluj that we have to go through I just
need to delete some rows move some
things around that didn't copy over ctrl
X to cut that ctrl V to paste let's
delete this column right click delete
and let's auto fit everything else to
see if it came out okay
and it looks like it did this is a small
table I can select some of the areas
here to remove the blank cells I just
press ctrl and multi-select and the
blank cells here just to remove those
right-click press Delete and now I have
my table and so I can use this table and
do some analysis on it so that's one of
the ways that we can do it unfortunately
there's not a native capability within
Excel yet where you can take PDF tables
nicely and get them into an excel format
you have to go use the workaround of
word so I hope that helps thanks for
