What’s up Guys!
I’m Ameen from Grasspo.
Today I’m going to show you How to change the iTunes Backup Location.
So, you have an Apple device and you take backup of your device on your Computer.
By default, iTunes stores the Backup on [C:] drive of your PC.
This can make your [C:] Drive full and may lead to Bad performance of your PC.
With this video, we’ll help you to transfer the backup file from
C Drive, to another location of your choice, which will help in
making [C:] Drive less occupied.
So Let’s get Started!
We can do this in just 2 steps.
1st Step is to find and rename our Backup Location.
Backup Locations vary based on how you Installed the iTunes app.
If you have installed itunes from your Web Browser, you have to go to this Location:
\users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Roaming\AppleComputer\MobileSync\Backup
If you have installed from Microsoft Store, you have to go to this Location:
\users\{USERNAME}\Apple\MobileSync\Backup
Since I have downloaded iTunes using the Microsoft Store, I’m
going to open this Location.
So To find the Backup Location
Let's open ‘This PC’
Open the C Drive
And then Open Users
Here Choose the Username of your PC, since the username of my pc
is this, I’m going to open this.
Now, open the apple folder and then mobile sync folder.
Here you can see the backup folder of itunes.
So let's open this backup folder.
Here, you can see the backup file of our device.
Now, we’ve found the backup location.
Next, let’s see the space occupied by the backup folder.
To see the space occupied,
Let's go back [show the actions] [Reach Mobile sync]
Here, right click on the folder and if you Click ‘Properties’.
You can see that the Backup of our device is occupying these many space
Okay
So once you find your backup location.
let’s rename our backup folder.
So to rename our backup folder,
Let’s go back to our backup folder
Right click on the folder
And choose ‘Rename’
I’m going to rename it as ‘Old Backup’
You can enter any name of your choice , but Make sure this
folder is not named as ‘Backup’
So, we’ve successfully completed our first step which is to find
and rename our backup folder.
Next, let’s move on to the 2nd step which is to Transfer
the File to the New Location.
[Animation to show the new location]
Okay
This new location can be on another Drive on our PC or an External Drive.
I’m going to transfer the backup to this Drive [Callout].
To transfer the file to the New location,
First, Let’s open our Drive.
Now Create a New folder here.
To create a folder,
Right click here and select ‘new’ and then ‘folder’.
I’m going to enter the name as ‘New iTunes Backup’.
Okay
So this is going to be the new location of our iTunes backup.
So to make this as your new backup location
We need to create a link from the old location to the new location.
[Show Split window]
So here you can see, this is our Old Location
And this is our New location
To create the link from old location to new location
Go to our old location.
And Press shift and right click.
Now click on “Open Powershell Window”.
Now type the following command:
cmd /c mklink /J “OldLocationpath\Backup” “New Location”.
[Command] is also given in the description below.
So Let’s type the command according to this.
So here we need to get the old location path [callout on
the command [old location]]
To get the old backup location,
Let’s go here and if you click on this, you can see that the
path of the location appears.
Now, to copy the location
Just right click and Select copy.
Now, let’s go back and paste it here.
Now, on the command we need to add this part which is “backward-slash backup”
Lets type that here
Once you do this
Make sure this command is open and closed by the quotation mark [callout]
Next we need to get the new location path [callout]
Lets Go to the new location
And open the folder which we created in the previous step
which is ‘New itunes backup’
Like you did before, If you click here,
you can see the path of the new location
So lets copy this path
then go back
And paste it here
Just like before, make sure you open and close the command
with the quotation marks.
So once you type the command like this press Enter.
Now, you can see that there is a command here which shows that a
junction has been created for our file.
As soon as this command appears,
You can see that a new backup folder is created here.
This means whenever a new backup is taken on the itunes it’ll be automatically
transferred to this new location here
To test that,
Let’s move our old backup file to the new backup folder.
Let’s open this folder.
Here you can see the old backup file
Now let’s move this folder
Now let's go back and open the new backup folder
And then paste it here.
As soon as you paste the folder here
You can see that this folder has been transferred to the new location.
This means that this folder will not occupy any space in the C Drive,
so whatever backup added to this location will be automatically
transferred to the new location.
[callout]
So to verify that, Let’s check the size of the ‘mobile sync’ folder now.
Let's go back.
Now, right click on the folder and now if you click properties.
Earlier the space occupied by the backup file was this,
Now we’ve successfully made the space occupied by the backup to zero.
So now we’ve transferred the files to the new location.
So now we’ve successfully changed our iTunes Backup location.
So from now, if we take a new backup from your apple device, your c drive
will no longer be occupied by the itunes
So thats it for todays video
