It's time for the Scotty Kilmer Channel
I'm going to show you how to fix emergency breaks that do nothing when you step on them, now
even though this GM's emergency break is all the way to the floor, the vehicle
still rolls, so we know something's wrong with the emergency brakes, no since the
emergency brake is all the way to the floor and it doesn't stop the vehicle
from rolling, we'll check the adjustments, to see if maybe that's just out of
adjustment, now on this suburban, the adjustment is under the driver's side
passenger door, right under here, but as we can see, the adjusting nut is already
screwed the whole way in, so we can't make it any tighter, so that means either
the cables have stretched and are going to need an expensive replacement, or the shoes
themselves are worn off or something's broken, so let's pull off a wheel, now the
drum brakes are inside here, so after we take the brake caliper off and pull this
off, then we get to the emergency shoe drum brakes, and in this case, the
material has been worn off probably from somebody leaving it on and
driving, as you can see from these new emergency brakes, here's the lining, the
old ones don't have any lining here it's been broken off, so I assume somebody put
the emergency brake on and drove it awhile and then just ripped it right off,
so we get a little ratchet and socket, and put it on the inside bolt and
unbolt it, remove a little retainer that holds it
in place, and then just get a big screwdriver and a pry bar, and you slide it
off, and it takes a little twisting, but then you get it off, and you can see, this
part here is all burnt off, and there's the new one, you can see the brake lining
on both sides, it's brand-new, give it a little twisting, you get the new one back on,
then you loosen the ring and the adjuster here, so it squeezes in the
whole way, and slide the top right on it, so it fits in place, then you put the little
backing piece in, and tighten it up, so it holds the shoes in place, you want it
nice and snug, so they don't move back and fourth, then you get the disk assembly,
slide it back on, and make sure that you can turn it, and if it's too
loose, you have to take it back off and adjust that little adjuster there by
turning it to make it tighter, in this case it's too loose, so we're going to
tighten it up,
and back it goes, it's got a little drag, which is what you want, then you slide
the brake caliper back on and bolt the back bolts on, get them nice and tight, and
then of course, do them on the other side, because they work in pairs, and the other
side's going be worn out too, and now when you step on the emergency brake,
it held nice and tight, and you can't budge it, so the next time your emergency brake
wear out, why not fix them yourself, and remember you've got in the car questions,
you just visit the Scotty Kilmer channel and I'll answer them as soon as I find
my way out of this jungle
