i'm replacing the doorknob on my storage
room door
with a keyed entry knob so i can lock
the door from the outside
i purchased a brinks high security keyed
entry knob
this one can also be used on exterior
doors
when purchasing a knob make sure all
essential hardware is included
the knob unit itself consists of two
separate parts
an inside knob with a thumb turn and a
keyed outside knob
this is the one that i'll replace note
that it is not a keyed entry knob
doorknobs vary in design and disassembly
some will require extra steps
but in general the disassembly is fairly
simple
this one has two screws on the inside
that hold it
in place
while holding the outside knob remove
the screws using a screwdriver or a
drill driver
once the screws are out the inside knob
can be removed
next remove the outside knob this
exposes the latch
now find the screws that hold it in
place on the face plate
remove using a screwdriver
the old latch can now be easily removed
next take the new latch and note the
proper installation position
the curved side of the latch bolt should
always be installed so it swings into
the strike plate on the door jamb
this latch can also be adjusted for
different size back sets
back set is the distance from the door
edge to the center of the hole
the latch can be adjusted to fit either
a 60 millimeter
which is most common like this door or a
70 millimeter
back set to adjust for a 70 millimeter
back set
move the black adjustment part with your
finger towards the latch bolt
move towards the rear for a 60
millimeter back set
this will be important later when i
install the knob
another modification is to match the
face plate with the recess
in the door the recess in this door has
curved corners
so i won't be using this plate that has
square corners
just for demonstration however here's
how to change out the face plate
using a flat head screwdriver pry each
corner until the plate is released
switch out the plates and snap into
place by squeezing them together
now take the new latch and fit it into
place
in this case the face plate is slightly
too big to recess
the recessed area will have to be
enlarged in order for this to fit
properly
to do this center the face plate and
hold it securely in place
trace around the perimeter with a pencil
and remove the latch in order to expose
the markings
use a wood chisel to shape and clear out
the recess
then return the latch for a perfect fit
next obtain the two small screws that
came with the kit
and secure the latch through the holes
in the face plate
now take the knobs and identify the
keyed outside knob
and the inside knob which has the thumb
turn
take the knobs and pull them apart from
their packaged position
starting with the outside knob take note
of its anatomy before installing
the key components are the two nuts
and the center spindle
note the semi-circle shape on the
spindle
this will be received in the latch at
the site of the back set adjustment that
i spoke about earlier
when inserting the spindle open the gap
by pushing in the latch bolt with your
thumb
insert the spindle in this manner
the nuts will also be received through
the designated holes
here's a better look from the other side
next take the inside knob and slide it
over the spindle
turn the thumb turn until it finds its
keyed position
then push the knob flush with the door
obtain the two machine screws
thread them to the nuts through the
holes in the rows
tighten the screws firmly using a
screwdriver
next test the lock and knobs making sure
the latch bolt functions properly
the strike plate can now be replaced if
needed
in this case the existing plate worked
fine but just for demonstration
i will replace it with the new one
remove the two screws from the plate and
set aside
this is the new strike plate the kit
came with two mounting screws that can
be used
however i'm going to use two long deck
screws instead
these screws are long enough to reach
the door frame studs
which will add more security
and finally check the function of the
knobs and latch
the door can now be locked
