now what I want to show to you right now
is the worst possible thing that you can
do to a safe lock don't do this don't
spin it turn it turn it turn it turn it
do not spend bad-bad hi today we're
looking at a combination lock this is a
standard group 2 combination lock very
common in a lot of household products as
well as some commercial products let's
take a look at this this is the dial in
this case this is a real off-brand lock
called sam o or sam oh i don't know how
you pronounce it some off-brand thing we
just have for display purposes yours if
you have a combination lock a dial on
your safe a mechanical combination lock
on your safe that may say Sargent and
Greenleaf it may say s and G it may say
LG or lagarde those are two of the most
common brands that we see the procedures
which we are going to demonstrate today
will work on any of those type of
products when you move into some higher
manipulation resistant type of lock
sometimes there's a switch in the middle
sometimes they pull out or push in
there's some different procedures that
are involved in opening those this what
I'm going to demonstrate today with this
lock does not apply to those functions
and it doesn't apply to a manipulation
resistant type of lock that has those
higher security features on it but 95%
of what you're going to have in your
home this will work for your combination
lock another caveat it will not work on
a sentry safe or what's called a direct
entry combination this won't work for a
sentry safe and it won't work for a
higher security manipulation resistant
or manipulation proof lock but it will
work for 95% of what you're going to
have on your gun safes or your home
safes floor safe that kind of stuff
that we find out there so let's take a
look at this
the combination for this lock is 30 80
50 the way that this opens is for
rotations left three rotations right two
rotations left one rotation to a
complete stop to the right so first
number in our combination as we said is
30 so where do you have to start we get
a lot of calls where do I need to start
when we are walking people through how
to open their combination lock where do
I start it doesn't matter where you
start you can start at zero you can
start at the first number in the
combination it makes no difference
whatsoever the lock does not care the
only thing that matters is you see the
first number in your combination four
times four times so I've started on zero
but you could start on 45 doesn't matter
we're going to thirty four times one two
three and I'm going to stop on the
fourth time now if you accidentally
we're to go past it to 31 that's all
right on the first number and this only
applies to the first number that you
enter in your combination you can go
around another turn the lock doesn't
care after that for your second third
and fourth rotations it does matter but
for the first combination for the first
number in the combination just go around
once more and stop you don't have to
start over just go right around there
stop on the first number in your
combination which is 34 times left two
thirty your first number now we're going
to go back to the right our second
number is 80 so we're going to go back
to the right counting every time we see
the second number in our combination
we're going to count it so we're going
back to the right three times once twice
and stop on that third time now as I
said if you go past it and you end up on
79 78 you've got to start over at this
point you can't go past your second or
your third numbers in your combination
you have to start over the complete
combination four times left to your
first number
so we've gone four times left 2:30
we've gone three times right 280 now
we're gonna go 2 times left again to our
last number which is 52 times left count
it every time you see it once twice stop
on that number you go past it you start
over no forgiveness on those 2nd and 3rd
numbers so we've entered our combination
now all that's left for us to do is to
retract the bolt so I'm going to turn
this display so that you can see the
bolt which is this part of the lock as
we turn back to the right there's no
number involved here we're just turning
to retract the bolt you're going to go
back to the right after you've entered
all three numbers until your dial comes
to a dead stop you will feel it now as
it begins to draw that bolt in as you
can see this happens on this lock around
zero sometimes it happens back around 95
that's called the drop in point as it
drops in the dial becomes a little more
difficult to turn it's a little stiffer
that's because it's begun
drawing this bolt into the body and it
clears the way for whatever bolt work is
involved inside of the door of your safe
or whatever the arrangement may be that
bolt is blocking when you have a handle
or a key to turn that bolt is blocking
so that you cannot turn that when you
retract it turning until your dial comes
to a complete stop and it will
completely stop don't stop when it gets
difficult stop when it stops when it
comes to a complete stop it clears the
path so that your bolt work your handle
your key whatever the case may be in
your particular situation can turn and
clear this bolt and that draws the bolts
the actual boat work that goes into the
frame of the door into the door so that
your door can then open from the safe
out of your floor off of your gun safe
opening whatever the case may be so I'm
going to run through it once more now
and just actually enter the combinations
we're
four times left 231 two three stop on
the fourth time thirty four times left
three times right - 81 - counting every
time we see it and stopping on the third
time 80 now we're going to times left to
the last number and our combination
which is 50 once twice counted every
time you see it and stop on the second
time back to the right dead stop
the safe is open now assuming you've got
don't have to have a key or something
your bolts are free the bolt is drawn
back into the body of that lock and you
can open your safe now now a few
preventative procedures sometimes if
you've got a number close to each other
which technically the numbers should
always be in you're in the in your
combination series of numbers the
numbers should always be at least ten
numbers apart now some some
manufacturers require twenty actually
apart but if you've got a closed number
let's say for instance your first number
is 40 and your second number is 30 so
we're going four times left of 40 and
then we're going back right three times
- 30 sometimes people will fly past that
first number and not count their count
will then be off they'll go they'll end
up going four times to a number instead
of three times and they can't get in -
always watch carefully if you're having
a difficulty opening your safe watch
your numbers really closely make sure
you're counting every time you see the
numbers in your combination four three
two one open another preventive
maintenance now this is this is critical
90% of the problems that we see with
people opening their saves when they
actually have a failure a slip number or
something is due to abuse now what I
want to show to you right now is the
worst possible thing that you can do to
a safe lock don't do this
don't spin it turn it turn it turn it
turn it
do not spin bad bad bad don't do that
that is what abuse it this is a finely
tuned piece of equipment in here little
parts small parts delicate and sensitive
parts so be gentle with it be delicate
with it treat it like a a beautiful
flower or something that you don't want
to mess up and cost you hundreds and
hundreds of dollars to get back to
whatever it is protecting for you don't
abuse it there's little delicate parts
in there be gentle with it
turn the dial do not spin it spinning
the dial is the worst thing that you can
do to it and the most abusive and it
causes people the most trouble things
can break in there things can slip and
cause your combination to change when
you don't expect it another common
problem you'll notice there's another
index mark on here this is called the
dialing index or opening index over here
to the left you see about 12 numbers
over 13 I can't tell from this angle
there is another mark and that is called
the change index it's only used for
changing the combination sometimes
people look at that and they begin
dialing into it and if you dial in your
combination if I'm dialing 30 and
instead of going to the opening index
there I'm going to the change index my
safe will not open that lock won't open
go with the index the opening index when
you're attempting to open your lock now
theoretically this combination can be
changed by the end user we discourage it
because there are there's always a
possibility when you're dealing with
this for something not to snap back
together right or not to go right we
discourage end users from changing
combinations but I will offer this
caution in case you do attempt to change
your own combination electronic locks
you can change the combination with the
door closed you shouldn't do it but you
can people do that lose a combination in
the process and they're locked out
always do it with
door open now you think that's common
sense it is common sense but a lot of
people call us and they've attempted to
change their combination and close the
door always change your combination
mechanical or electronic with the door
open and always test it we tested a
minimum of three times to five times
before you close the door again and lock
the safe always test the combination
after you change it if you decide to
take that upon yourself this is going to
open your S&G sergeant Greenleaf it's
going to open your lagarde sometimes
says LG on the dial works for a cannon
safe works for a Liberty safe in many
cases lots of these different gun safes
floor safes home safes as well as a
number of commercial safes thank you for
watching
change the lock on my front doors you
can't see me anymore
