what's going on guys i'm bill and
welcome to bill's hour two today i'm
going to be showing you guys
how to install a new door handle on a
brand new door so we haven't got any
holes obviously
let's get straight into it guys let's do
this all right guys so today i'm going
to show you how to install a lock on a
brand new door
it's surprisingly very very simple it's
not like the
good old days where you had to do
everything old school
now we've got new technology or new
tools out there that make your life
so much easier the first thing you need
to keep in mind is the side that the
lock is actually going to be on
in case you're installing the door
yourself so just refer back to your
manufacturer
in this particular case here because
it's a hollow core door which means it's
not solid all the way through
the lock has to be centered on this side
here so we've got a little sticker on
the side
that says important um hollow cord core
door lock
um must be installed on this side here
make sure you keep that in mind
otherwise you'll weaken your door so now
that we've got that out of the way what
we're going to do now
is figure out the location for our door
where it's going to be installed or our
door handle
in this particular case here we've
already got a strike plate this is an
existing door jamb
if you haven't got one well then you can
technically speaking install it at any
height
but we're going to refer back to our old
strike plate here um so what i'm going
to do is close the door
have it in the closed position and then
i'm going to simply mark up the center
of
my strike plate roughly so it looks like
it's about
right here is the center of my strike
plate
once we've got that we can take those
markings use a square and we're going to
square everything off
having lines on this side of the door
and also on the face
i know i said face but i should have
said edge but you guys hopefully know
what i mean
so just run a line all the way across
we're going to repeat that on the other
side
so now we've basically got a line on
this side of the door and also here
on the edge so at this point yeah what i
like to use
is a little jig like this one here this
one is made by milwaukee
um ryobi also make it a whole different
bunch of brands out there make these
really really handy and they make life
so easy so all you need to do with this
is you can see there's a center line
here we're just going to line that up
with our marking on this side here of
the door
and we can also do the same on the
inside but technically speaking if
you've got one side lined up
it'll should all line up on its own
so we're just going to line this one
here up make sure we've got our
i might get the camera so i can show you
guys so hopefully you guys can see a bit
better now
so all we do is we slot this it's like a
u-shape
straight over the door position that
line
so hopefully you guys can see there in
line with this line here
once we've got that one there lined up
there's a clamp on the back or a
clamping system
simply tighten that up and now
everything stays in place so we've got
our little location here
um or a jig so that we can cut out our
main hole and
also for our latch on this side here
so now that we've got everything lined
up we can take our hole saw make sure
it's the right size if you're not too
sure
you can simply slide it in make sure it
fits and it's the right diameter
lock everything in place now with this
one here i don't go all the way through
the door all i want to do is make sure
i've gone in far enough
until i see the actual drill bit or the
tip come out the other side and the
reason why i do this
is so that i don't have any blow out on
the back side of the door because a lot
of times
if you're drilling and putting a bit of
pressure on there even if you go slow it
might chip off
the face of our door here so we
definitely don't want that
so simply line it up get it nice and
level
then you can check every now and again
make sure you haven't gone all the way
through yet
once again and i can feel it it's about
to come out the other side
so at this point i'll back it off and
now you can go in through the other side
once you've got that you can then remove
all the excess material
whenever you're buying a hole saw try
find one that's got a little step bit
like this
because any leftover material that's
inside you can use that step
to just keep prying it out until it's
completely removed
so i've switched my hole saw bit over
and we're now going to do the same thing
on the side of the door
once again that's now going all the way
through so our latch
is going to go right here and we can
take our chisel and remove
that extra excess material whether you
use a chisel or a screwdriver
doesn't matter as long as you get it out
[Applause]
so now we can remove our little jig here
[Music]
and what we're going to do at this point
is we're going to switch over to another
little jig
now that's why i love all these little
tools and gadgets that you can buy now
like i said it makes life so much easier
this one here is from ryobi once again
another
a whole bunch of other brands make it
and i am due for a new one because my
blades are
fairly dull at the moment so you'll
probably notice that i might struggle
with this one here but generally
speaking
it's so much easier than what i'm about
to show you guys
all you want to do is we've got a little
square section here that's going to be
for our little latch or the plate for
the latch
um so all you need to do here is this
little section here
goes straight inside and you can see it
wobbles around a bit so what you want to
do is line it up until you're 100
happy once you're 100 happy with the
position
as i am now simply take a hammer
and then you can beat on this side of
the tool
so once we've given that door a fair bit
of a beating um you can see now it's
penetrated that timber a bit and if i
remove this
i might need a bit of a wobble like i
said these ones here are a bit dull
so i am due for a new one
which would have made things a bit
easier but as you can tell we've got the
little section here
now marked out ready to go and what i
love about this once again
all we do is just flip it over we've got
little blades here on the edges that's
going to basically be my chisel it's
going to remove
supposed to remove all this excess
material but once again my blades are
dull so
it might not remove it in one go so all
you want to do
hold it so in case you guys didn't see
what i just did
we just took that section there with a
little blade push it into that hole that
we've just created
and we're going to tap on it until we
remove that excess material
so i'll try and see might be able to get
a good angle
so hopefully you guys can see a little
bit better now but we're just going to
tap on it from the bottom
[Music]
i can see that section there came out
perfectly which is what i'm after just
for this video
but sometimes slightly it hasn't been
going all the way through and removing
that excess material because my blades
are a bit dull
so that's all perfect up on top we're
going to flip the tool around
and do the same thing going back down
the other way
and we'll see if this one here came out
or not
so this side here is a little bit stuck
like i was saying i was giving a bit of
a hard time
we'll just flip this one here try chisel
off the top section again
yeah there we go it came out so
we've got this little section here off
cuts that we can remove
if you've got any excess material inside
then you can just simply clean it out
with a chisel if you need to
but i try and always use my utility
blade
a lot more control when using the blade
especially if it's fresh which this one
here isn't
[Music]
just clean everything up most of the
time this one here will come out
and you won't have to do much
adjustments to it
but just because my blades are blunt
which i've said probably 10 times now
that's why it's giving me a bit of a
hard time so we've got another perfect
little cutout right here
and now it's time to install our door
handle
so now we can take our latch slot that
one there through
install our new screws make sure
everything's lined up
and now we can install the door handle
and then test out your door
perfect now if you like you can also
replace your strike plate
um which i will do in this case here but
hopefully you guys have enjoyed the
video and you've learned something new
once again
like i've always told you guys this
channel is solely dedicated to people
learning how to do things themselves
empowering you to get out there and give
it a go yourself so
hopefully you guys have enjoyed the
video and you've learned something new
as always like comment and subscribe
until next time i'm bill
thanks for watching bill's how to
