as you might guess from the counter and
sink behind me our dishwasher's been
having trouble
it's been beeping when the door is shut
and the display hasn't been working well
now i just cycled the power at the
circuit breaker
and when i came back it seemed to start
working again so that's a little bit
weird so i want to show you what i'm
doing on this kitchenaid dishwasher and
let me show you one of the best tricks
that i've learned in working on
dishwashers suppose the first one is
obviously fiddle with the buttons try to
reset things look for the lock the child
proof lock is not turned on and then
obviously turning off power pulling the
plug if none of those little tricks work
there's something really important that
can save you a lot of time and headache
as you try to solve and repair a problem
yourself on a lot of dishwashers if you
get down front here there's just two
screws that you undo
pull this out this one has some
sound muffling insulation
and then we've got this beauty right
here this is like pure gold
this thing's a service technician manual
it tells you all about the error codes
and troubleshooting now i don't know how
many dishwashers have this but the fact
that kitchenaid has it is amazing super
helpful so leave a comment down below if
you find a technical service manual and
let others know what kind of dishwasher
you had
now i want you to make sure you're being
safe i'm going to show you what i've
done but you're on your own as far as
safety so be sure you know what you're
doing and use that extra care and
caution service diagnostics with error
codes it tells me how to enter a service
mode that's going to start by flashing
through some error codes and let me know
the most recent four or five errors on
this dishwasher and then here i've got
the service diagnostic cycle so this can
be a little bit confusing but it goes
through each interval for example number
25 is just turning on all the lights to
make sure things are working as i start
this let me preface this with an
important point i have no idea what i'm
doing i've never fixed this kitchenaid
i'm not an appliance repair person i've
never gone to training i'm just trying
to follow these service repair
technician instructions so and don't
trust anything that i've done because
your situation's probably different but
i'm gonna show you what i did hopefully
it's helpful
all right first of all i've spent some
time getting myself familiar with how
this whole process is supposed to work
i've made a little table to clean
led
right here is going to be our key and
i'm going to write down the number of
blinks with any error codes that show at
each cycle here so i can learn what they
need to begin we're going to press the
start button to wake up the control
panel
okay seems to woken up got a light down
here that's good because earlier when i
cycled the power nothing was showing up
and then this random button starts
showing up i wonder if there's something
under the touch panel like some water or
food that's causing a problem
all right here it's supposed to turn on
all the leds for a total of six seconds
and then it's going to go through one
minute and 21 second cycle to show each
error code if i want to advance past
something i can push the start button
here we go
get that guy back on
i'm just going to use these three
buttons here
one two three
one two three
one two three good they've all turned on
two second pause here we go let's count
this this should be the first the
function one
two
three
four
five
five
so i'm gonna go
we're getting a five
and then one
i'm going to go ahead and push start and
resume
right here and let's see if it comes to
the next one
this tells me that if there's no error
the clean ld led will stand solid for
five seconds
well we're not getting anything
so i'm going to go ahead and close this
tell them it's clean i'm gonna open it
up
and look
it didn't go through the whole cycle
so
but i did get this error code function
five and problem number one
all right so it seems our error
was simply a door switch or stuck open
what's the cause is the door's not
latched within four seconds of pressing
the start
tell the customer follow the directions
so it seems my dishwasher had a pretty
simple problem i've heard that these
kitchenaids can have a problem with this
door switch and i've also heard that
it's not too hard to change so hopefully
i don't keep having this issue but
chances are since it happened once it's
going to happen so here's what i'm going
to do i'm going to throw some dishes in
here i don't think i'll put the whole
sink of dirty dishes in and run a cycle
we'll see how it does
mom if you're watching this you probably
don't like something i did in loading
the dishwasher
but it's gonna be good enough for our
test
so let's put some soap in run this thing
for a cycle and see what happens
now you notice i've left the sound
muffler off down here that's gonna make
this a lot noisier than usual
okay
this thing kept beeping at me so i did
nothing special i just opened it tried
again and it worked so
here we go
okay it's running let's come back in a
couple hours when this thing's finished
its cycle
it's a couple hours later dishwasher is
my first time opening it
and
it's all clean
looks pretty good feels feels clean
a little bit of water around
here's my theory of what was going on
remember this dishwasher was beeping
when you closed it and it had a random
light turned on
up here and occasionally pushed another
light
and then the error code being the 5-1
indicating a switch problem i think the
problem was just that the switch here
that's triggered when the door closes
was stuck
and it popped loose so how that happened
i'm not exactly sure i believe these
switches tend to
give a problem over time so if i keep
seeing this happen i'm going to end up
replacing this switch
thanks so much hope you found this
helpful have a great day
