hey guys for today's video I'm going to
show you how to do a password recovery
on a Cisco router this router that you
can see right here is a 26 21 X M
previously I used it for experimenting
stuff and lab configuration but right
now I don't remember what was the
password and I decided to make a video
and show you how to do that how to do a
password recovery you can see it's
unplugged the power button is currently
turned off the auxiliary port the
console port that we mainly used to
configure the router out of the box and
the network interfaces let's connect the
power cable to the power supply this
router has only one power supply it's a
small office home office so it does need
a redundant power unit and let's connect
the console cable to the router this one
that I'm using has actually a USB port
on the end of the cable so it makes my
life a bit easier when I'm trying to
connect it to a laptop that doesn't have
a serial port the alternative the cable
that usually comes from Cisco is this
one that has rj45 on one end and let's
see if the camera can pick it up and
rs-232 on other end which makes this
converter and must have when you're
trying to use the original cable that
comes from Cisco out of the box alright
I got everything that I need I got the
console cable connected to my laptop
let's start the router and do the
password recovery I'm going to use putty
to connect to this router here I have to
selective serial radio button and then I
have to select what communication port
I'm going to use let's find out from the
device manager that this converter uses
what port or poor the computer assigned
to it so communication port five just so
you know I don't have a break button on
this laptop so when the router boots up
I have to use putty special
and hold the control button at the same
time so I can break into rom monitor
mode let's do that once twice maybe
three or four times making sure that the
router picks it up and yeah one more
time there we go
the point here is that I have to make
sure that next time this router boots up
it doesn't read each startup config I'm
going to use the command comm frac 0x20
142 and reset the router since this is a
very old router it takes a long time for
it to boot up so a bit of fast
forwarding and there we go it asks for
configuration as if it's the first time
we are configuring this router I say no
and there we go this router is
completely blank right now and you can
tell by the name router so let's go to
configuration mode and configure a
username and password but before doing
that I want to show you something how we
can tell the router doesn't read the
configuration other than the name router
and not seeing any other thing is to
show version of the router and and this
will tell you what is the configuration
register of this router in this case it
doesn't read the startup config so let's
configure the username and the password
here I'm going to use William privilege
15 in the secret obviously Cisco mode
let's also change enable password
because I don't want to get stuck the
next time the router boots up and I'm
like oh god what was the enable password
so one tip and it's an important one if
the configuration of the router matters
to you you can always copy the startup
config to the running config that's
important because maybe you just want to
do a password recover you don't want to
configure this router from scratch and
this way I'm just copying everything
from the startup config to the running
config
and it doesn't affect the password the
hostname of the router is changed you
can see that already it's taking a long
time from for the router to show the
running config yet a host name so
everything else is restored except for
the password that we just set it's there
already it's not going to be wiped out
by the old password and yeah we can see
that the configuration register still
not reading the startup config I'm going
to change that using config register
command and then the value you can see
it right there
it's 2102 once we do that we save the
config and once we reboot the router it
boots up it reads the startup config and
we have the password so we are pretty
much done here all right let's reboot
the router and a bit of fast forwarding
here should be up in a second
and there we go
enable and ask sort of password
obviously password Cisco and that's it
hopefully this video has been useful if
it was give it a thumbs up and if you
