here we will open and start a late-model
push-button start
Chevrolet Malibu with a dead key fob
battery and a hidden keyhole and yes
there is a way to get in and get going
our first step is to retrieve the
mechanical key from the fob look for a
button on the side of the fob as shown
push the button and pull the keyring
side of the fob with your free hand to
remove the key as noted a keyhole is not
visible on this model and likely most
Malibu's going forward GM as a response
to its ignition key debacle has stated
that it intends to convert all models to
keyless ignition there is a cap at the
rear of the driver's door handle hiding
the lock cylinder and it needs to be
removed to remove the cap pull the door
handle out to the open position insert
the key into the slot seen here on the
bottom of the cap as far up as it will
go
then try outward and yes you will feel
like you're prying off a piece of your
car but it's okay and necessary move the
cap rearward revealing the key cylinder
you may have a bit of a struggle getting
the tab that protrudes deeper into the
door to come free however this is our
third Chevrolet model to use this style
cap and this one came away very very
easily
as you can see we did not notice any
change in the design but the previous
two were a struggle now you can insert
the key into the exposed key cylinder
and turn and you're in the car and
attempt to start the car fails and so we
need to find its backup slot to the
transmitter in the Malibu the slot or
pocket is located in the face of the
rear of the inside of the center console
it looks for all the world that the fob
is to be placed on its side but it would
not go in so we made it in upright with
the buttons out and it worked allowing
us to start the car as no
the cars electronics recognize the key
fob even though the fobs internal
battery was dead and this guy is ready
to go don't forget to get new batteries
for your files for help with other push
button start cars with dead key fobs
