that kind of an odd question from a guy
named Nate on YouTube basically he wants
to start training at his local 10th
planet Affiliate gym but before he does
that he wants to save money and maximize
his time at least that's what he said by
training in the basement with his buddy
on some mats and then once they get to a
point where they feel like they're close
to Bluebell
then they're going to join the gym and
start training from there and he's
wondering what techniques he should work
on so Nate first off thanks for the
question dude and I'm going to blow over
the fact that you're so focused on the
you're so focused on this thing here ok
again what you probably find is that
when you start training at the gym you
will start trading before the train to
learn the techniques but what keeps you
a lot of times is the camaraderie and
the Brotherhood and all that other cool
stuff along with it and then the
training itself this thing is sort of
just for the byproduct of it so don't
get too focused on it you'll probably
learn that as you're searching but I'll
let that go and I will tell you how to
maximize your time and save money but
it's probably not going to be the way
that you think and I know where you're
coming from because I started training
in a basement myself when I was about 16
years old back in high school I wrestled
and I started to watch UFC and you know
I was like washing it to me it made
sense right if I wrestled then I wanted
to learn the ground game and learn how
to finish people because if I could take
them down then I wanted to learn how to
submit people because I wanted to fight
the mixed martial arts and to me that
seemed logical you know take the person
down with wrestling get on top of them
Wichitans minute right and so me and my
buddies we would come home you know to
my house and we would go to the basement
we'd move stuff out of the way and we
would practice with each other in the
way that we would do this is by watching
videos that we could find online which
wasn't many because I mean there was no
YouTube right and streaming media was
really hard to find so we were just
basically finding like videos of fights
and things like that and we would stop
in like we would watch look at the the
what their hand grips were and stuff
like that we would watch VHS and DVDs of
like pride fights and UFC fights and
again we would piece together what we
could when we did this for several
months almost about a year all
all when we were high school and I
remember when I finally found a jujitsu
gym in my my town which was about 50
minutes away I was like yes my start
training and I started messaging the
coach there through AOL Instant
Messenger showing my age again with VHS
tapes and AOL Instant Messenger and I
told him I was like listen man I'm just
giving you a heads up I've been training
a little bit of wrestled I'm probably
going to be close to blue belt level
that's what I told him right I come into
the gym on the first day and marks me
May of 2003 and I got obliterated right
destroyed over and over again I got
submitted boom boom boom just like
clockwork
everybody submitted me white belts blue
belts Pro bucks whole thing and it was
eye-opening for me
i friggin loved right because as a
wrestler you realize like oh man these
guys are way better than me I have so
much to learn it was cool because I was
exhausted I was tired but had so much
fun the camaraderie was there everybody
was having a good time I mean it was
rough but never I was having a good time
the thing that again was valuable there
was because I learned more in that one
day of training with that coach with an
expert then I did like that whole year
like of training in the basement with my
buddies right learn so much more and so
getting to your thing right you're
saying maximize your time maximize your
time means that you're being efficient
you're not being efficient with you and
your buddy who are both blind and
ignorant into the depth of jiu-jitsu
right you may not think you are but you
are right it's okay it's normal as you
train more you will be you'll start to
sort of see the depth of it right but it
takes time but you're the blind leading
the blind and that's a horribly
inefficient way to Train okay and save
money like man like if it's a priority
to you I was a poor kid man I grew up in
a poor a bad part of town I was poor
when I was a kid I was poor as a
teenager I was you know working from a
young age just to make money to do stuff
right I'd get it right sometimes you
don't wanna spend money but if it's a
priority if this is what you want then
like don't buy other stuff right like I
mean for me personally I didn't buy a
lot of stuff when I was younger like I
didn't go shopping for clothes there was
no buying like drinks and stuff like
that I was like I want to do jiu-jitsu
this is what I have money for I'll
sacrifice these other areas so that I
can do this so make it a priority right
if it's what you want and also you'll
save more money and time
if you start training with an expert
because they'll make the process so much
smoother because you're gonna come into
a place where one you have a coach and
you're surrounded by people that have
been there and done that and they will
help you get over the obstacles that
you're going to run to it and run into
much smoother okay
now the way that you could maximize your
time right and be very efficient with it
with the basement sort of training with
your buddy
is you guys both go to the gym and this
is what I did with my buddy my buddy
Chris we would train together right and
then when we were done training we would
go home and we would go back and start
to drill those techniques over and over
and over again so if our coach taught an
arm bar or Kimura we would go home and
we would practice an arm bar that can
you work it more over and over and over
again and it made a huge difference in
our game because we were while other
people were getting like that you know
10 to 20 reps in the gym we were getting
on hundreds of reps at home and we would
come in and use him like clockwork that
is a much better way to train right so
Nate completely just don't worry about
doing this whole basement training thing
and getting to blue belt in the one
thing man also a blue box kind of
ambiguous for most gyms even if you came
into a gym the coach is probably still
going to make you wait you're not going
to be able to get as good as you think
you are training in the basement with
your friend okay so instead what you
need to do is you just need to figure
out how you can make your gym membership
pay for it and start training there and
start becoming a part of something right
and start learning from an expert who
can guide you through the process so
much more smoothly and build you up so
Nate that's my answer brother hope that
helps
good luck with you and your started
training I'll select you guys next time
