this question comes from let's just say
anonymous I guess how would I or someone
else sell software without any existing
infrastructure or a company in my case
it's a new type of encryption for Linux
but how could I get it out on the market
without having having any reputation huh
that is the question everybody wants the
answer for and the answer that I always
give is create a business right so
that's one of the big problems you get
into the geek world is you know with
geeks and all these technology
professionals what they want to do is
you want to go out there and they want
to create all this really cool
technology but then they don't want to
actually have to sell it and that
doesn't really work out so basically
what I would say is if you're not really
looking for about money if you don't
really care about money what I would
argue is you should probably open source
it to be honest with you make it an
open-source project put it out there for
for everybody to to download and play
with and then that will give you
something on your resume to say look at
what I've done I have created this open
source Linux project encryption project
the issue that you run into especially
with doing something like encryption for
Linux is this thing is so specific that
I would argue that you would really have
to create a company and put time and
energy into the company itself in order
to be able to try to sell this product
right if the more consumer sumer ish
your product is the more likely it is
somebody will be able to pick it up and
it'll go viral it'll be pretty easy to
sell especially if it's something like
in an app store something like that but
like with an encryption for Linux how
many people are even how many people are
looking for that option out of the
people that are looking for the option
how many would reasonably even find you
and if they would reasonably find you
how many are actually like to use your
product that's pretty small so you know
with sales sales is all a numbers game
if you figure you can sell you can
actually make a sale to one percent of
the people that you talk to that means
in order to make one sale you have to
talk to
people make 10 sales you got to talk to
a thousand people so on and so forth
so you really got to go out there and
schmooze so that would be the type of
thing if I would if I come up with some
kind of encryption for Linux I would be
frankly in some place like Silicon
Valley schmoozing the hell out of every
geek I could find right because that
that's where all the geeks are that's
where the people that deal with the
large systems are so on and so forth so
you're in a hard spot there
what I think the two things the the two
ways I would go with this if you really
cared one if you're not worried about
the money I would open-source it and you
just give it out that way because if
it's free you know people are more
likely to use something that's free so
you can attach your name to it I'm the
guy who created this this may not be the
product you make your million dollars
off of but because you've proven you can
do this maybe you can create something
in the future and you'll have a
reputation people care about the other
thing you could think about is you know
if you truly have some kind of wacky ass
new encryption for Linux something that
is truly new and amazing and remarkable
you could think about trying to start a
startup company off of it
security is hot right now Linux is hot
right now
the fact that you I mean if you can
actually create encryption if you can if
you can actually create you know enough
to create real encryption that anybody
would care about that is that super sexy
to a lot of people so that is probably
where I would go at either open source
or I would try to get on the whole
startup bandwagon and go from there the
reason I would think about the startup
bandwagon for you is because encryption
is sexy and Linux is sexy well you have
to think about with the startup world
with all these venture capitalists and
angel funders and all that kind of stuff
is that they invest in founders not
necessarily the specific technology or
the specific product so if you can go in
and you can say I created this security
product on my own and I want to turn
this into the next startup company in
the next great startup company you know
the next CloudFlare you know
out flare any of you security companies
right they may invest in you and you may
end up being a make a lot of money not
necessarily because this particular
product will fly but if you can go in
there you can get funding you find out
that there's something else in security
that is more marketable then you can do
what is called pivoting and go from
there those would be my thoughts but
nothing is easy I mean the easy option
is open-source it uh the really
balls-out hard way is debate essentially
do the equivalent of knocking on doors
and trying to sell your product probably
the the own the only realistic way I
could see you actually walking out of
this making some money is again trying
to do your own startup company trying to
get funding and all of that I could see
that working out for you if you actually
know how to do this but again that
that's its own little world so yeah
those are some thoughts
