hello fellow designers its Karen as
Karen went customs and today I'm giving
you guys a little bit of an update on my
sewing pattern business this morning I
am spending a little time cutting out a
few of my mermaid gown patterns
I ordered prints of these and I got them
in the mail on Saturday so I'm gonna be
cutting these out and um packaging them
and then I'm gonna take this to the post
office a little bit later I'm also gonna
give you guys an update on how my
pattern sales are going on Etsy as well
as like how much I've made off my
patterns and how much of a sunset she
has taken etcetera so this is how the
pattern comes the paper is 36 by 72
inches and as you can see there's like
quite a bit of white space so what I do
as a courtesy to my customers what about
a full-size pattern was to make it
easier for shipping if I cut the pieces
out which is a difference from what you
don't see with commercial patterns
commercial patterns have just a large
piece of paper and you have to cut them
out of yourself so I go ahead and cut
each piece out this one goes up to an
extra-large and then I just fold them up
individually and stick them into the
little packaging so I'm just about to
cut all of these out real quick
[Music]
this is a good day peace
[Applause]
[Music]
you
[Music]
usually do like I'll fold each piece
each similar piece first like I'll fold
all the good days first and I'll follow
all the skirts and then I'll fall all
the body's pieces but I'm only doing
five so I really don't feel like it's
gonna make a difference but I do feel
like if you do things like that when
you're working in bulk if you do things
production style like that it makes it
go a little bit faster and as you can
see I have a pull ting table which has a
ruler grid on the top so I use the I use
these grid marks to help guide me on
where to fold so that I know that they
will fit into my eight and a half by
five and a half inch to protect
[Music]
not a serious question how do people use
these ring lights that wear glasses cuz
I'm just I'm gonna have to try guys cuz
I look crazy I hope you I can see anyway
so I got my patterns printed out so I'm
just putting them in order and that's I
package them okay so this is what I put
my patterns and it's just a little half
deep page protector so I usually stick
the pattern in first
well they the instructions in first and
then I'll take my folded pattern and
stick those pieces in one by one
so that's how it ends up looking that's
one at package pattern
[Music]
so I got all my orders packaged and I'm
pretty ready to go to the post office so
yeah let's go
so I just wanted to show you guys an
update on how my pattern business on
Etsy is going okay so for example here
is my overview for the last seven days
I got 1093 views 447 visits 15 orders
and made $320 and that is just in the
last 7 days
let's go back to I can't do custom
okay so here's the custom view so I
believe I started selling patterns on
Etsy in November so I'm just gonna put
it back to November the first and then
today is February 24 so hit apply okay
so since I started selling my patterns
in November I have had 4138 visits I had
a hundred and thirty-four orders so I
sold one hundred and thirty-four items
whether that was physical copies of
planners physical copies of patterns PDF
copies of patterns which is the majority
and my revenue between November and now
which is almost four months was two
thousand eight hundred and nine dollars
so I'm not rolling in the dough but I
think that's very very good just for
like productivity tools like patterns
and planners and stuff so my 4-yard
mermaid gown with g'day pattern sold 84
copies and made sixteen hundred twenty
dollars so that is all like one of my
biggest goals has been to generate
residual income so this is all residual
income like I had to make the pattern
once and I have it posted and Etsy
emails it out to people for me I don't
have to do any work when people buy this
pattern on Etsy so since November that
is how much I made off of this one
pattern is definitely the most popular I
also have my unitard bodysuit pattern
the instant download has sold 28 copies
172 people favorited this so like what
are y'all waiting for I want all y'all
to buy pattern
I saw 28 copies of the unitard it's made
me $277 my crop sweatshirt and highways
leggings
pattern i sold eight copies and a few of
those went for free with my fashion
designer planners that i sold earlier
this month that has made me a hundred
and fifty four dollars off that pattern
alone
the fashion designer planner I sold ten
of those so I made $450 and that is just
off of that's just my profit like
obviously the the physical planner I I
wasn't profiting as much I think my
profit was about twenty-five dollars
maybe even less than that once you
factor in the cost of getting the
patterns printed getting them shipped to
me buying the the cardstock for the
dividers the lamination paper the auto
labor like it just takes a long time to
put those binders together so that is
why I ended up doing my digital copy so
this shows my overview for this month
sales on etsy I was trying to just do
everything through like cash apps I
wouldn't have to pay fees to a third
party but keeping up with orders and
things through like Instagram messages
and Facebook messages and emails it's
just too much so I like the fact that
everything is here and if someone buys a
digital item I don't have to do anything
as he does it for me so it just makes it
a little bit easier especially with all
the other tests I have to keep up with
so for the month of February you can see
I made one thousand four hundred seventy
dollars and 31 cents in sales and then
out of that I paid one hundred ninety
five dollars and fifty six cents of that
to Etsy so listing fees $13.20 shipping
labels came up to 105 dollars and 52
cents transaction fees came up to
seventy six dollars and eighty four
cents so yeah it's he definitely takes
their cut but for the convenience I
don't think that
I would be willing to to not pay that
because it just becomes too much to keep
up with so that's my overview forward
you
