welcome to Markus GTV I'm chef Marcus
julienne on the chef on a mission
today's mission is 50 mistakes my
business website 50 mistakes calm it's
where I have a ton of videos and
resources to help businesses especially
restaurants run smoother the background
so I just I just looked at a restaurant
I was called in looked at a restaurant
that the owner is selling the restaurant
he's you know has a great deal and great
deals off for me and so I'm gonna look
that it's been an hour away it's in a
great town by the way it's a really
awesome high-profile community a lot of
money there 30 miles from New York City
I would totally open a restaurant in
this area it's it's an awesome place to
run a higher-end restaurant so here's
the main problem when you find a
restaurant for sale these restaurant
owners think they've got all this stuff
they think that their business is worth
so much money not in the 10 times I
found out that when a restaurants for
sale they're for sale because they're
not doing good they're for sale because
they're losing money let's face it if if
a restaurant was if a business is making
money and the owners happy why would you
want to sell it you keep just repeating
the same whole process is like putting a
dollar in a slot machine when do you
when you stop the dollar you stop the
dollar when you're out of money well if
you're putting a dollar in you're
getting two back you're gonna do that
all day long if you're consistently
doing that right you're not gonna give
up so a lot of these reference hang how
to sell the place over this one place
today the place was not that nice it was
it was it was a Mexican restaurant
the decor if I were to go in there I
need probably spend 80 grand at least to
fix the place up to to make it look like
it would be my restaurant and I said
would say probably average restaurant
Torres do a lot of painting do a lot of
things the bottom line is he wants two
hundred and fifty thousand dollars for
some tables and chairs he knows his
business isn't worth anything he told me
my business isn't worth
the problem is he's trying to get money
out that he put in and plumbing electric
new floor in the kitchen things like
that and to be honest with you a lot of
places you rent from the building's you
rent from you don't have to replace
electric you don't have to replace the
plumbing he chose to do all of these
things that the average consumer can't
see and it doesn't touch the guest
experience so I was really honest with
them and I said listen hey I don't know
who's gonna give you the money that
you're looking for I don't want to
insult you with a lowball price but as
I'm as I'm talking to him further I want
to find out what he's doing wrong
because he told me what he was doing and
the numbers are not to brag about at all
I mean I don't know how he's staying in
business where he's at with his rent and
I really felt sorry is a sad situation
with his partner and the bottom line is
people restaurant owners just don't they
don't give us the oath they don't they
don't try hard enough and I really tried
to convince the guy you need to keep
this location because you're gonna lose
your money no matter what nobody's gonna
walk in here and give you what you're
asking for what you think you need to
get out of it to pay off your debt
you're you're in you're in it for the
loss right now and I hope other
restaurant owners listen I mean you're
in it for the loss what you need to do
is start hiring talented people like a
good marketing firm social media you
need to start advertising the correct
way but the biggest problem is when I
walked in the door I looked around I'm
like I'm in a high scale high upscale
community I'm walking in I'm looking at
the bar there's nothing high upscale on
the bar the bars not even really filled
with that many bottles you have to
really match a lot of times the
neighborhood you're in now for me in our
restaurant I don't match the
neighborhood I'm in I'm a couple steps
above it but I do a fantastic job
marketing and bringing people in from
all over the place to rebuild the
community been doing this for 14 years
but he's in a community where the
community's rebuilt their street
festivals all the time the economy is
booming down there people are there
spending money left and right and you're
gonna get these people to walk in your
restaurant you're not giving them a
reason to spend any money there's no
reason to spend
money in this restaurant there's no
marketing in place there's just that the
sign in the front Jamie you should have
seen this I wish you were there I thinks
you're you're good on all this stuff the
women's bathroom first of all you would
have you would have freaked out on your
bike yeah it's clean but it's just so
old and archaic and if you're gonna
spend that kind of money so if I spent
250 grand on this building I know at
least put another eighty hundred grand
then just to make it look good so the
women's bathroom is totally presentable
and the dining room looks great then
it's just more than a paint job to by
the way it's much one of their paint job
all new tables and chairs but bar needs
to be redone who knows maybe it's one
hundred and twenty five thousand dollars
I couldn't when I joked this place has
been open a year and a half I drove past
the restaurant and I missed it because
their sign out front is a vinyl banner
now open they opened a year and a half
ago on the sign says now open still
totally miss it the first time and they
have their own parking lot which is even
incredible I actually pulled in right
next to it with past the parking lot and
totally missed the restaurant now there
are so many basic things that restaurant
owners business owners generally need to
do that they're failing to do and then
all of a sudden they blame the economy
they blame their staff they blame other
circumstances when they never really
blame themselves people this is your
responsibility all this stuff you're the
one has to be on top of now don't get me
wrong I know how to do a lot of things
in my business that's why I wrote the
book 50 mistakes business owners make it
so I have the website but I have a
friend who took his restaurant from like
six hundred thousand five hundred
thousand to like one point nine million
in a matter of two years and he doesn't
know how he did it but what he did was
he hired the right people to do it for
him he hired somebody do all of his
advertising all of his loyalty
management all of his marketing all of
his social media he hired and put in
place the right people to get the job
done and knowing that that's what needs
to be done he was frustrated and
frustrating and frustrated because he's
been this restaurant isn't going
anywhere now the guy was with today his
rush it's not going anywhere I explained
everything that I've been in this
situation a lot of time sure people call
me in to look at a business and I say
flat out this is what you need to do
there's no way that I'm gonna buy your
business there's no way that anybody
else is gonna buy your biz
you're gonna go bankrupt you're gonna
you're gonna be forced to close your
doors and get rid of everything
you're better off at this point just
handing me your business your bank
account and loving need try to run with
it so I can at least put some money in
the bank so you can pay off all the debt
that you actually owe see so this is a
situation a lot of restaurants are in if
you're a restaurant tour find somebody
who's really talented give them a piece
of the pie put them in there because at
the end of the day what do you really
have as far as if you're a failing
restaurant you have no assets you have
tables and chairs and ovens those are so
dirt cheap when they're used that it's
ridiculous you can buy that stuff at
auctions okay restaurants typically
there's no money in that for a
restaurant tour okay and the money you
put in the place like building a dance
floor and putting all these new floors
and everything you can't take that with
you that's it that's a landlord's deal
now that's all the landlord that's
keeping that stays there in the
buildings you really have to spend your
money wisely when you open a restaurant
you has to look good so you have to do
that's up yet to do it's a matter you
have to fill in the whole piece and this
guy needs major marketing he's a major
up left he needs a new manager there
it's it's amazing what I see these
predicaments end of restaurant owners if
you think you've got what it takes me a
restaurant owner and you because you
like being restaurant because you think
it's an allure so finessing you have no
no experience you have very little
business unless you have a lot of
gung-ho and excitement and a lot of
willingness to learn from mistakes and
move forward and not give up this
restaurant owner today told me oh I come
in early I come in uh 8:30 9 o'clock I
make sure everybody's working in the
kitchen he goes then I go in and sit at
my desk in my office and watch TV this
is what this guy told me Jamie he
watches TV until the lock doors open he
goes oh I love my restaurant then I put
my coat on and I walk outside at noon
when we open you just watch TV for an
hour and a half why aren't you on
Facebook Instagram snapchat why aren't
you running analytics why aren't you
marketing why aren't you branding why
aren't you doing Facebook live why
aren't you getting new graphics done
wired
there's I was like there's 50 things you
should be doing instead of watching TV
for an hour and a half people if you're
gonna be in the restaurant business
there's no
time to watch TV and sit back in your
office and complain that your restaurant
is failing
then there's this this so it's not even
mediocre work it's just it's flat-out
unacceptable work you're gonna lose your
butt you're gonna lose your ass in the
restaurant industry people either you
learn how to do it or you hire people
that's the bottom line go to 50 mistakes
comm it's a great resource for
restaurant tourism for all business
owners if you have any questions leave
