what's up everybody this is sam today
i'm going to be talking about reselling
tickets
i've been doing this for about 15 years
which is quite a long time
now i'm not reselling like massive
quantities of tickets i'm only reselling
the tickets that i don't personally use
what i've done is i have season tickets
i can't use them all or my friends can't
use them so then i'll sell whatever's
left over
when i was a kid i took every single
dollar that i could possibly find
and i spent it all on cleveland
cavaliers season tickets
owning season tickets comes with all
sorts of perks especially during the
years that i own them i've received free
tickets i've received lebron james shoes
i've received lebron jerseys autographed
pictures
but by far the coolest item that i've
ever received
is in my basement it's not just
something that you can go and buy
this is an official cleveland cavaliers
bench seat that was used by the cavs
from the 2003 season all the way to 2019
and i just received this last year this
was a major perk
i can't believe that i actually have
this in my house it has become
my favorite piece of memorabilia that i
own
to think of the games that this chair
was actually a part of is
crazy to think about now it's just here
in my basement i can watch the cavs
play their games not necessarily win all
of them like i used to
but i can sit in this and it's very
comfortable which is a major plus
all right back to the tickets so i've
been going to cavaliers games ever since
the 2001 2002 season when michael jordan
came back
and the moment that i entered that arena
i knew that i wanted to be more
involved in the basketball environment
so the way for me to do that was to buy
season tickets so i could actually
become
a part owner and my investment has truly
paid off
in the early 2000s the cavaliers were an
absolute terrible team
they lost pretty much every game i
remember they were winning like 15
17 games a season before lebron came and
the arena was called the gundarina
it held over 20 000 people but i
remember games
where there were honestly less than 10
000 people in the stands
this made it very easy to get season
tickets during these years my dad had
part season tickets which she shared
with friends and i could share with
friends
went to a lot of games we became big
fans after just a couple years of doing
this
funny thing happened the cavs won the
lottery and they got the number one
overall pick in 2003 which of course
ended up being lebron
he was the true hometown hero and it was
a surreal feeling
knowing that he was going to be joining
the team as you can imagine tickets
became tougher to get but since we were
already locked in we were in a good
position
now the cavs didn't start winning right
away they didn't make the playoffs the
first two years that lebron was there
but after that i had already saved 1800
to invest in season tickets by the year
2006.
yes i was very young at the time but i
had saved enough money in order to buy
these tickets by
selling sports cards on ebay at this
time i had four season tickets all to
myself which was over 160 tickets per
season
plus playoff games i was able to still
go to a lot of games and i just sold the
games that i didn't want to go to
and after doing this for three seasons i
was able to actually break even
by the time that lebron took the cavs to
the 2007 nba finals i was actually
starting to make a little bit of money
i was actually able to turn a profit of
200 during the season
even though i went to several games and
all of the nba final games
the next season the cavs were supposed
to be really good again however it just
didn't pan out the way that
i was hoping and many fans were hoping
and i ended up actually
losing 200 that season the team was good
but it just
felt like something was missing
something was off you could just get a
sense for that and people just weren't
as interested in 2008 as they were in
2007.
the last game in the season was against
the celtics which the celtics beat them
out of the playoffs
and that's when lebron took his jersey
off and he decided to go and move to
miami
this was a major hit to my investment as
you can imagine
and i started to lose a little bit of
money coming that next season
so lebron was off the team for four
straight years where he went to miami
and i ended up losing an average of a
hundred dollars every year
for four years in a row but it was just
a hundred dollars and the reason that it
was only a hundred dollars because
the cavs weren't making the playoffs you
see playoff tickets are an additional
charge
so during the regular season my tickets
were about ten dollars a piece
and then come playoffs they might be 20
30 40 depending on how far
the cavs are going along since the cavs
weren't making the playoffs i didn't
have to pay for these and i wasn't going
to playoff games which
eats into my budget now in 2014 lebron
decided to come back to the cavaliers
and this was
the absolute best news that you can
possibly imagine
i thought that his career in cleveland
was
over for sure over but this was the best
news that i could receive
for my investment my tickets at this
point in time were actually under 1500
a season because i was getting a
discount i had owned season tickets for
so long
and they were getting tougher for the
team to actually sell to
people like me because no one knew that
lebron was coming back you have to buy
these tickets eight months in advance
of the next season starting so it had
been months until lebron was able to
make his decision about where he was
gonna go play next so this fifteen
hundred dollars is in addition to the
six hundred dollars i was already in the
hole so i was actually
down 2100 by the time that the 2014-2015
season
started then two more tickets came up
for sale for season tickets so i had to
buy those as well
so this was another 750 so i was in the
hole 2 850
by the time the season started the home
opener against the new york knicks that
year
was absolutely insane everyone was
pumped up to see lebron back
and my tickets were flying off the shelf
i was able to go to that game
and sell the other tickets that i wasn't
using my tickets cost nine dollars a
piece which i sat in and then i sold the
tickets that were next to me
for a hundred dollars each i went to
that game
and i still made a 340 profit
at the same time it was amazing it just
kind of showed me
what was about to come that season the
nba at this time was becoming more and
more popular so it was
never a better time to own tickets now
when a team like the spurs or the lakers
or the thunder were in town
tickets would just sell so quickly these
tickets would average like 200
each and then other games like the
grizzlies or
or the knicks or or the heat or whatever
other teams they were averaging about
forty dollars a ticket this is all
during the regular season during the
regular season i went to quite a few of
these games and i still
came away with fifteen hundred dollars
in revenue with the 2300 that i had
spent
i was ahead by twelve thousand dollars
now the cavs
made it to the playoffs that year and
the team was on a roll
tickets became extremely expensive yes
my cost went up a little bit but the
amount of tickets
that were selling during the playoffs
for high dollar values was crazy
each ticket cost me about twenty dollars
a piece during the playoffs but i was
able to sell them for an average of 250
they played just six regular season
playoff games at home that year which
netted me a 5500 increase then the cavs
made it to the finals again that year as
well
but the interest in the team was much
much greater than it had been
in 2007 an additional four tickets came
up for sale
so of course i bought those as well
giving me 10
tickets to the nba finals you see as the
team makes it further and further into
the playoffs tickets become more and
more expensive and the majority of
season ticket holders are businesses
most of these businesses are unwilling
to spend more and more money so they
didn't want to buy finals tickets so
as those become for sale they go to
people like me
who want to buy additional tickets
finals tickets were 80 a piece and i had
10 of them so i was spending about 800
per finals game there were three finals
games so i ended up spending 2 400
that year but on the secondary market
you couldn't find tickets
for less than four hundred dollars to
get into the arena i averaged over 450
dollars
per ticket sold and i was able to buy
myself some lower bolt tickets to sit in
for 900 each and it didn't even matter
finals netted me another 10
000 in just those three games that year
i ended up making over 27
000 in profit when the 2016 season
started
everyone was so pumped my season tickets
did go up 10
but hey i was definitely willing to pay
that the cavs again made the finals
against the warriors
the historic warriors team and i ended
up having 10 tickets again and i was
able to make a lot of money
the tickets compared to 2015 had really
shot up in value
now they were averaging 500 just to get
into the arena and that was for games
three and four
game six came back to cleveland and the
average price was
800 that year in the 2016 season when
the cavs won the championship i made
35 000 in profit the season opener of
the 2017 season as you can imagine
was insane the cubs were in the world
series and the cavs were having their
home opener
to raise the banner everyone wanted to
be in cleveland that night
that game alone paid for half of my
full season tickets that season didn't
turn out as well as the previous one
the cavs did make it to the finals i
only had six season tickets to the
finals but i ended up making twelve
thousand dollars in profit the 2018
season was similar
but the hype had fallen just a little
bit more i ended up making ten thousand
dollars in profit so you can't really
complain about that
i only had the six season tickets again
nothing else came up for sale
unfortunately after that season lebron
left the team again which left me with
some season tickets that had gone up in
price
and they're very difficult to sell all
in all it had been a great investment
though i'm up about 85 thousand dollars
i was able to pay off my student loan
and i made a large investment in the
stock market
i hope this gives you some ideas about
how you can make money off of tickets
you know not tickets scalping where
you're buying tons and tons and tickets
and trying to main
like control the cost of those but just
reselling tickets that
maybe you're not using or looking for
another team
that you think is going to be really hot
and maybe buying season tickets just to
sell those
