shopify markets what is it how does it
work and how can we use it to go global
with our online stores let's jump in
shopify market allows you to open your
store to international customers through
custom language currency
pricing
and stock levels that ultimately gives
the customer a better experience and
allows you to sell internationally
within a click of a button so who is
shopify markets for it's for sellers who
don't want to open up multiple stores or
have another shopify website or who
don't want to go down the shopify plus
route which costs a lot of money it's
essentially a turn key solution allowing
merchants to open stores internationally
with one click who is it not for it's
not for our sellers who have multiple
stores across different countries who
want to deliver
custom messaging custom imagery and
customer experience for the customer in
that country why shopify markets and not
shopify plus well it's a lot easier to
go ahead and test different markets and
open up your geographical customer base
than setting up another store spending a
lot of time and money trying to get that
all running rather than when we can
click it with one button and test a
market and again start to put some ad
spend into that market and see how it
works out it's a lot easier and a lot
more efficient way to test markets and
move forward as a business one other
massive headache that shopify markets is
the solution for is duplicate content
across different stores so if you've
ever managed multiple stores before you
know that updating one piece of copy on
one store then has to apply to you know
three or four others however with
shopify markets because it's on the same
store the update of content is a lot
easier and a lot more smoother and makes
our life a whole lot easier as well how
do you get access to shopify markets
it's pretty simple let's jump in have a
look and we'll roll now the first step
for shopify markets is to navigate to
your store online
drop down to your typical settings on
your store
and then you'll see markets with a
little icon that says new click on that
and then welcome to markets we're in
here so
as you see here we've got our primary
market which will be most likely the
country that you sell from or that you
have stock in and then you'll see other
markets which will be your international
market for
it'll have all the other countries as
you see on screen here we've got
australia for our international market
you may have multiple other countries
because you do sell at the moment to
multiple countries so coming in here
what we want to do to start our markets
is first of all add a market at the top
right hand corner once you've clicked on
that we'll give the market name for this
example we're going to get to use japan
we'll go ahead and add countries or
regions
pop in japan
pick that one and now this is the new
market that's created for japan so under
this market here we have quite a few
different settings that we need to set
so the first one really is domains and
languages so we want to click on manage
domains because we're separating out a
different language or a different
experience for japan for this example
there's a couple of options that we can
provide that give that market a customer
experience whether that's a primary
domain so that can be
codeonz.com.eu
[Music]
dot
jp i think virtualband and then we also
have a subdomain which is nz dot
your domain name
and then we also have sub folders so
subfolders we can actually run under our
current domain so if your current domain
is dot com that would be dot com forward
slash en
japan so en stands for english or the
language and obviously japan jp stands
for japan so the one we're going to
choose today is just a subfolder for
this example here so go ahead and pop in
any custom subfolder you want you could
make it japan like this if you wanted to
or you could just keep it jp and see
here we go but adding a domain
and subdomain is really easy click on
domain name click on the drop down and
you'll be able to see your different
domains there if you do choose to go for
the domain option you will have to set
up your new domain
code nz or whatever that new language or
country domain is under your domain
settings on your shopify backend and
then we can also choose or we can pop it
under the primary domain name which is
will just essentially matter it'll fit
under the current domain name and
nothing will really change from a domain
name perspective then we've got shop
languages here
so shop languages essentially we can add
in a custom language here so
what we have to do is go on over to shop
languages here which will open up our
shopify languages and then we can add
that custom language into there so we'll
jump in add a language
find that language for this one we'll
use in japanese add japanese and then
it's going to ask us to find an app
that's going to do the translations for
us
so this part here you can go a couple of
different routes you can choose a whole
multitude of different apps or different
options however the easiest option is
just to click on here visit the shopify
app store what it's going to do is just
find us a bunch of apps here that we can
use feel free to have a look through the
reviews here i'll do a separate video on
this language translation app review
because there are some pros and cons
however we won't go into this video
we'll just leave it as is
so we'll just go ahead and shoot back to
the domains and languages so once you've
added your language in here you the
japanese language pop up and you can
publish that language onto your website
shoot back to the overall japanese
market the next step is currency and
pricing so go ahead and jump into
managed currency and pricing
so under here the currency is already
set to
the japanese yen
however with this currency we can again
click on it and choose whatever currency
we want so for example if it's in a
country like america and you're offering
it to mexico you could
have a standardized currency like us
dollars if you wanted to that's really
up to you coming back to japan market
our last step on this first market
settings is duties and import taxes we
have to set up duties and import taxes
on your store first so if you don't
currently have duties and importance
you'll have to enable duties and import
taxes and then you can make market
specific changes there so considering
the store doesn't apply duties and
import taxes we can go ahead and skip
this step however i would seriously
consider looking into this in each
market that you are sending products to
because duties and imports
can sting you or the customer quite a
bit and ruin the whole experience so
make sure you do research do some
googling on what the inputs and duties
and taxes are
for
sending from your country to that
country and then go ahead and apply that
the next step is shipping zones so what
we want to do in this step is add the
shipping costs to that new country so
what we'll do is jump in here and go to
shipping shoot on down into manage rates
under the shipping tab here scroll down
and navigate to
create a shipping zone
and for this zone we're going to call it
japan the country obviously japan add
that country once it's done add the rate
for this example rate will do standard
shipping as an example but we could set
a new rate international dhl shipping to
japan for example it's got 20 dollars
you can add some conditions here on item
weight um
with your freight provider you will get
item weights and item prices as you
would currently
go ahead and upload all these ones here
to that new country once that's done
shoot on back over to your japanese
market and then we're going to go on to
payments so click go to payments so in
your new country there might be unique
payment options that they provide for
example china has alipay i believe and
for example usa might have a pay later
option like sizzle so in in here under
payments you can add in those custom
payment options and shopify will also
tell you if that payment option that you
currently provide to your current
customers is not available in that
country perhaps
and so we can make some adjustments here
per
market in here which is really amazing
and back to japanese market last step is
taxes so adding in any taxes that again
you find in your research with import
duties and taxes so you can go ahead and
here and add the taxis and duties that
will come up here as well so you can set
that per market the next step once we've
set up that new market is we need to
figure out how the customer is going to
redirect or how are we going to direct
the customer to the right place so what
that basically means is you would have
seen it before when you land on a
website it will tell you hey would you
like to go to your local website because
potentially you went to the dot com
it'll then send you to either a suffix
like we're having at the moment which
will be en jp or it might even send you
to another domain for example for me dot
co dot nz so
this geo location
redirect happens through an app or a
separate app app outside markets and
luckily shopify gives us the option to
have our own app here so once we jump
under to the right here we'll see all
enable auto redirects so go to
preferences and it says geo location app
installed because we have one installed
at the moment however we can find an app
on the app store that's going to the geo
location for us
and go ahead and install that and then
the geolocation notification as you'll
see here will come up
so i'll link a couple of options down in
the footer the three best apps that i
can find for geolocational redirection
so
try those and see if they work for you
most of them have a lot of customization
you can have
this geolocation app i believe it's from
native from shopify hasn't got that many
good reviews i haven't had too many
problems with it however they're quite a
few other apps out there they can do the
same thing
for a free plan as well so there is
domain redirection here what domain
redirection is going to do is bypass the
pop-up app and it's going to send
directly the user directly to the
country specific domain so this is
called a hard redirect it's not the
greatest experience because there's a
lot of users on vpns these days surfing
the web surfing your website in a
different country so if they get
consistently pushed back to whatever vpn
country they're in they're not going to
be able to make a purchase from you so
we always want to give the customer the
option to stay in that country or go to
the recommended country that vip is
picking up so i would keep domain
redirection off for now unless you have
a specific country
scenario that you might need and drop it
in the comments below if you do and i
can reply to those and tell you what i
think there
so we do have price rounding here so
price rounding is essentially rounding
your price to the nearest dollar so
because they're doing automatic exchange
rate for the price of your product we
don't want it as
48.53
we want it as 49. as a whole otherwise
it looks a little funky and so that's
essentially what price rounding is doing
and so we want to keep that on just to
make the visuals of the website and just
the simplicity a lot better so we'll
keep that on there
and then we have include or exclude tax
based on your customers country again
this comes back to the tax and duties
research you have done earlier or that
you should be doing so go ahead and
include or exclude that depending on
your situation for tax obligations there
and so the final step is enabling
multi-currency for your new market so
when you've got this new person that's
come internationally to your website
they've found themselves on the right
domain they're seeing the right language
now we want to deliver them the right
currency localized to them so by
enabling multi-currency we're going to
have to have a few
minimum requirements you do need to
believe i believe you do need to be on
an advanced shopify plan to offer
multi-currency for this scenario here
we're just going to keep the currency as
new zealand dollars and essentially once
you have
if you have upgraded it's as simple as
coming into here
changing the currency to the japanese
yen
and saving
that as the default currency for that
one we want to have a look and see how
everything's performing so we can click
the preview we can click of the new
market which is for us as a suffix en
gp and then you're gonna see
a pop-up come up because it's noticing i
am in new zealand and once wants to push
me to new zealand and some final
thoughts with shopify markets you
seriously need to consider the
experience for your customers so
whatever freight options you use you
need to make sure they are fast enough
and delivering a great experience to
your customer so look to use freight
providers like dhl or any other freight
provider that's going to offer ultra
fast service provide tracking for the
customer and ultimately give the
customer the best experience possible
because as you know when you sell
international things slow down
especially in these times when things
are really really slow it's really
important to
offer the customer a better and faster
alternative with freight rather than
keep it the cheapest or the freest
option one other option is to set up a
local warehouse in that new country that
will cost you quite a lot more money and
infrastructure to set up however that
could be worth it if that market works
out to be profitable enough for you so
seriously consider setting up or tying
into a new 3pl and always allow users an
option to override the website that
they're in so don't force users to go to
a website everybody hates that
experience when you're forced to website
and that's not what you want to be and
you have to try to figure out how to
navigate back make it seamless and make
it super easy for the customer to get to
where they need to go and to shop in
their local currency it's really that
simple and at the end of the day we have
to keep the customer in mind because
this is why we open up a new marketplace
so we can serve the customer and a more
tailored experience
