Hi, my name's Richard from the interview training website PassMyInterview.com. And in this tutorial,
I am going to teach you how to answer the first interview question, Tell me about yourself!
So, whenever you attend an interview, either face to face or online, the first thing they
will say to you is, tell me about yourself. I'm going to walk through into this interview
room and the interviewer is going to say to me, tell me about yourself, and I will teach
you exactly what to say. Here we go. Come in! Hello there. Hello, hello, hello, nice
to meet you. Please take a seat. Thank you very much. Welcome to his interview, Richard,
my name's Andrew and this is my colleague, Joshua. So, to start off, can you TELL ME
ABOUT YOURSELF? Thank you very much for inviting me to be interviewed for this position today.
I have applied for this job because I believe the skills, the qualities and the experience
I have are a strong match for the job description. Over the years, I have built up lots of skills
and qualities that, I believe, will be of benefit to your organization. I am a very
strong team worker and I understand that in order to achieve difficult projects and tasks,
you have to work with other people, and you have to bring in their skills and experiences.
I am also very good at working under pressure and I actually prefer to be in situations
where the pressure is on, because I believe this is where I am at my best. I am also very
good at building up relationships with clients and customers, and I feel this will benefit
your organization from a commercial perspective. Highlights of my career include, in particular,
in my last role, I was praised by my manager for working as part of a team that managed
to increase company sales by twenty five percent. So, I am very focused on achieving difficult
tasks and projects that are aligned to your strategic objectives. I am the type of person
who will work hard, I will never let you down, and I will always act as a positive role model
for your customers. If you hire me in this position, you will quickly see a positive
return on your investment. Now, that was a brilliant answer to that first interview question,
tell me about yourself, and before I give you the exact script to use when answering
this first interview question, here are three really important tips. TIP NUMBER ONE: A good
format to remember when you answer the interview question, tell me about yourself is set SET.
Now, this stands for Skills and Qualities, Experience and the Type of person you are.
Before you go into your interview, whether it's a face-to-face interview, or it is online,
remember the SET format. So, you will notice that when I answered the question, tell me
about yourself, I started off and I spoke about the skills and the qualities I had that
were a match for the job description. I then went on to give them a little bit of information
about the experiences I had that I felt would be of benefit to their company. And then I
finished off and told them the type of person I am, and how I will help them to achieve
their commercial objectives. Now, if you want to, you can expand on the experience part
and you can include there any details about your educational qualifications and also about
any courses you have attended. But don't forget, they should have your resume or your CV in
front of them, so they can ask you about those as the interview progresses. TIP NUMBER TWO:
Remember to talk about how you will help them to achieve their commercial goals in your
answer. That's very, very important. Remember, they are looking to employ someone. And the
whole purpose of that is to get someone within their organization who will make a difference.
So, remember to talk about that in your answer; how you are going to help them to achieve
their commercial goals and objectives. And TIP NUMBER THREE, before I give you the script,
don't be afraid to sell yourself. Be positive in your answer and big yourself up… It is
really, really important! And there is nothing wrong with saying that you are a great team
worker and you can work under pressure, because they will want to delve deeper into those
skills and qualities as the interview progresses. But don't be afraid to really sell yourself.
And it's also important to practice your answer to the question, tell me about yourself before
the interview begins, because if you can get this first question answered correctly and
with confidence, it sets you up for the rest of your interview. So, here's a brilliant
answer, an example script that you can use when answering this first interview question:
Tell me about yourself. Here we go. “Thank you very much for inviting me to be interviewed
for this position today. I have applied for this job because I believe the skills, the
qualities and the experience I have are a strong match for the job description. Over
the years, I have built up lots of skills and qualities that I believe will be of benefit
to your organization. I am a very strong team worker and I understand that in order to achieve
difficult projects and tasks, you must work with other people, and you must bring in their
skills and their experiences. I am also very good at working under pressure and I actually
prefer to be in situations where the pressure is on, because I believe this is where I am
at my best. I am also very good at building up relationships with clients and customers,
and I feel this will benefit your organization from a commercial perspective. Highlights
of my career include, in particular, in my last role, I was praised by my manager for
working as part of a team that managed to increase company sales by twenty five percent.
So, I am very focused on achieving difficult tasks and projects that are aligned to your
strategic objectives. I am the type of person who will work hard, I will never let you down,
and I will always act as a positive role model when dealing with your customers and clients.
If you hire me in this position, you will quickly see a positive return on your investment.”
And that is a cracking answer that will really SET you up with confidence for your interview.
Now, you don't have to use that exact script. You can tweak it and amend it to suit your
own skills, qualities and your own experiences. But it's a great format to use. Don't forget
the skills and qualities, experiences and perhaps educational qualifications and finish
off and tell them the type of person you are and what you will do in the role if they hire
you. Now, please do make sure you watch my full mock interview by CLICKING THAT LINK
