what about my mvps and welcome back to
my channel you see me
in a greenery in my yard again it's
because i'm going to bring you
another announcement live at the end of
this month the last sunday of the month
we will be on youtube live again there's
a bunch of different things that
happened
in the last youtube live that we were
talking about in regards to a poetry
class
instead of talking about the poetry
class continuously now i'm going to be
thinking about what the poetry class is
actually going to look like
i wanted to talk about uh something else
so i want you
in the comments down below to tell me
what we should talk about
during the live q a maybe uh
the last time i put a poll uh i'll put
the poll right here
we said that we were going to do the
poetry course so we talked about the
poetry course but
the second highest requested um
i guess like thing to talk about was the
q a so let me know
and we can talk about that also drop a
comment down below if there's anything
else you might want to do
what i wanted to talk to you about real
quick so this wasn't just an
announcement video was
why you shouldn't publish your poetry i
know
a bunch of different uh poets have asked
me before like
if publishing my poetry means um you
know a bunch of things copyright and
stuff like that so i wanted to talk
about that briefly just real quick and
then in my blog
i go a bit more in depth about it but if
anything
you can contact me in my services and
maybe that's something that we can work
out through a consultation
so uh two main things one
uh with the rights uh that you could
possibly relinquish
with publishing your work and then
secondly we're going to talk about it
not really being
ready right so first publishing rights
if you're publishing with a traditional
publisher this is basically what i'm
talking about with publishing
you usually relinquish your first serial
rights or first american rights or
a bunch of other things some of them
vary differently so that basically means
that they had the first crack at your
work
that means that publishers are always
looking for the freshest work
um the the newest work the coolest work
so
they want to make sure that they have
their back and they get
like the first comeuppance for that kind
of stuff so if you publish with the
publisher
they have for serial rights now this
doesn't mean that the work doesn't
belong to you the work is still
yours uh it's your creativity it was
your
think brain but like let's say if i
publish a poem
last month and then in two months um i'm
going to have it featured somewhere else
or if i'm going to go to a reading or
i'm going to have that poem featured in
one of my chat books or a book
what i'm going to have to say is that
that poem appeared
in that journal first um if you're
talking about it on a radio or a reading
that's going to be recorded you would
just say something like
uh this poem appeared here first and
just like that you are
you are shouting out where the poem
originally came
from and that's how you get around that
copyright but once you actually have
your book
or once you start going on a reading
circuit or reading it on
line or putting it on instagram it is
still your work and it is still your
material
so it always stays your material you
just have to mention that other place
first
and that's usually for traditional
publishing now this
second one also goes to traditional
publishing and non-traditional
publishing which is like self-publishing
or going through uh
some other means of like print on demand
or something and this
is uh just basically the work not being
ready yet
um i know a lot of you get excited and i
get excited too to just
write something and you have those big
wide eyes in your starry eye and you're
like oh yeah like i just wrote this
great piece
forget all about these other pieces
these other pieces are in the bushes but
i really like this one right now
and you send it in somewhere you post it
online and people liked it
and then uh the the poem finally shows
up if it was something that you posted
online or published in a journal
um or you you're going through your feed
and you look at it later and
and like a month later you're like i
don't know
maybe i could have been jammed here
maybe i could put a period there
this wasn't that clear or i don't feel
this way about the poem anymore
those kind of things can happen too so
uh
another reason you should not publish
your poetry is because maybe it's just
not ready yet maybe you just have to sit
on it and look at it a little more and
if it's something that stays unpublished
you're able to work with it and
negotiate some of the things and wrestle
with the concept some more
so those are two quick reasons why you
shouldn't publish your poetry i know
that's something people have asked
i am personally a proponent for
publishing because you want to write the
work to actually get it out there and
for people to see it
i was just working with high school
students this week and they're writing
amazing material
and they want to be heard and other
people want to hear those those
words i had a poetry group that we were
we were
working with for this high school but
then on the other side
at the same time there was a jazz group
uh that was being worked with in the
summer camp and then we would bring them
together at the end
and the jazz kids were so excited to
hear the words from the poets and they
also felt those same sentiments so
when you are writing certain things know
that you're also writing towards an
audience and that's why i'm a proponent
of publishing
as always like comment and subscribe and
i'll see you in the next class
and drop a comment down below and let me
know what we should possibly go over
in our live youtube video that's going
to be at the end of this month
last sunday of the month it's most
likely going to be a q a but if i see
something else that's really cool
that's what we'll do instead peace
