systems versus goals

setting goals was a common practice that
I used to make progress in my life

goals can be useful they can also have
many limitations and that's where
systems come in

shifting from goal setting to adapting
habits and systems was a game changer
for me
systems are the specific actions and
habits that I put into place to move
toward my desired outcome for example
when I wanted to improve my overall
health and lose weight instead of just
setting a goal to lose 20 pounds I
adapted new daily habits that would move
me towards the outcome I wanted which
was walking and doing yoga every day
focusing on the long-term benefits
versus the short-term goal like just
losing weight I have created a lifelong
healthy habit
systems can be more reliable flexible
and effective at helping me improve my
life

these are some of the benefits of
focusing on systems instead of goals
that I've experienced

goals are often based on a specific
outcome that I hope to achieve
[Music]
after sustaining a brain injury from a
car accident setting goals was well no
longer worked for me
much of what I wanted to achieve both
for my health and the progress in my
life was simply out of my control now
I would become very discouraged when I
repeatedly set goals that I didn't meet
[Music]
systems on the other hand are actions
and habits that I put into place to
achieve my desired outcome
[Music]
by focusing on the system that leads to
my goal I am more confident that I will
eventually get there
which makes me feel like I'm in control
of my day-to-day life and my future
[Music]
when I focus on a goal it's easy to get
discouraged if I'm not seeing progress
quickly
with systems and habits I can track my
progress on a long-term basis like
months and see how far I've come

finding happiness by enjoying the
journey not by awaiting the destination
[Music]
focusing on the direction I'm heading
and enjoying the journey along the way I
am happy and content
this can be incredibly motivating and
helps me stay on track because I'm
enjoying the process of learning
something new

take into account the realities of life
my physical abilities and energy vary
from day to day

systems are more adaptable and can be
adjusted as needed which is critical for
me
I try very hard to honor how I'm feeling
physically mentally and emotionally
and I don't like to feel guilty about
practicing self-care which we all need
this means that if something unexpected
comes up or I simply feel unwell
I can modify my system to accommodate it
without giving up my entire goal

I'm creating positive lifelong habits
big changes take time to achieve
and I approach improving my life much
like climbing a mountain one step at a
time always getting closer to the summit
I identify what I want to achieve and
then I build systems and habits that
will help me move toward my end result
each day
week and month
baby stepping my way forward

overall setting systems instead of goals
can be more effective and sustainable
way to achieve the things that I want in
life
