1 million plastic bottles are consumed
every minute
today we're at the plastic plant where
we're going to show you how this shirt
gets paid it gets made out of paint
recycled plastic bottle so we just got
into North Carolina here we stop for
lunch at a place were on the way to the
plastic recycling plant and as we're
here we're by this beautiful river we
find plastic all around there's a
plastic bottle down here this about to
hop in the river so we're gonna take
this right here take it over the plastic
recycling plants we just got our safety
goggles in our ear plugs here about to
walk we plant a lot of loud noises in
[Music]
[Applause]
this is crazy we have pallets of trash
coming in it's the first step right here
the goal is to get it ground up really
small so we can make apparel out of it
but there's a lot of squash processes
that make sure that it goes through so
that it's clean we've been walking
through the facilities seeing exactly
how it's broken down to make all the
threads that end up going into losers
right here
[Music]
the goatee
the plastic sheet grinded down
throughout machinery into these small
samples what they do is they bake these
and they heat them up to find the
imperfections to make sure that these
shirts in the fabric of the continents
coming out is the highest quality weave
the next step the process is the yard
actually getting weave together to make
the fabrics for the shirt the oldest
recycled yarn is going into these
diseases hold that key
for role and those seven teachers about
560 plastic water bottles out of our
ocean so although you are that's innate
adhere it turns into this kind of fabric
which we now take to get wash and soften
so that it feels nice on your body
[Applause]
[Music]
so here we have whatever rain doing
bastards
out of the press 34 is three that's
running
[Music]
so a lot of the plastic are these poxy
bottles actually coming out of the ocean
we have some that are from ocean
collection programs yes okay as long as
we can increase recycling rates and the
value people see maybe they get there
they prevent it from going and I think
that would be the best part the biggest
challenge for unified today is the
amount of bottles we can get yeah that's
because the recycling rates so low but
the Americans are so poor on the
recycling rates we fight for the bottles
my daughter's a freshman in college when
she heard I was building a plan to turn
recycled PT drink bottles she finally
said well dad that's a cool project you
know the younger generation is driving
the older generation in the right
direction that's amazing it isn't that's
very cool we're trying to now develop
more of a sustainability to her products
right and not only the get back part but
making our products more sustainable so
both with recycled shirts with
sustainable reusable water bottles yeah
metal straws everything that kind of
falls in line with that so you would say
the biggest biggest challenge really is
just getting more people to be
knowledgeable into actually recycled yes
and not just the trash
[Music]
