okay
three two one hey guys
so today i'm here in tacoma with
botanicas this is anya you've seen her
on my channel before
she's the owner of botanicas today we
are gonna go
walk around look through the cycle of
plants from start to finish
a day in l.a yeah i just wanted to ask
how many plants you have here in
all of this i want to say
one of the really cool things about
botanicas in my opinion that's different
from a lot of places
they don't actually import and just sell
all of the plants like
flip them they actually take cuttings
and grow them from start to finish
homegrown really cool we're going to go
through that process now
no he'll fix that okay you don't have
nothing not my
first we're going to start with
propagating the mother plant and we are
here with taylor
we're going to take a cutting off of
this philadelphia sportianum
and just show you what that takes i can
automatically see that there's two
points i can take a cutting from
probably even three so i want to take
the whole strand that i can cut apart
later first
and then i'll chop them up into smaller
cuttings
i have a node with an active aerial root
here and that's going to be
yeah it's so fuzzy and cute one stick
that one in water trim that guy off
boom he goes in water and then we have
our last one here
will they just sit in this like under
grow lights or
yeah so we have a whole shelf dedicated
to our water cuttings
and they'll sit in these water cups
together we'll change the water every
five days or so just so it doesn't get
kind of icky starts to rot until we see
some big long beautiful roots and we can
plant them
sweet okay let's go do that now we're at
the plant's
second station which they've been water
propagating for
oh yeah i should probably introduce so
oh no that wasn't forgotten
hi i'm sophie and i'm julie what's kind
of your process
so really what we're trying to do is
establish the plants in
their next phase so the first thing that
we do is we kind of dig through this
this tub here and see look for a plant
with some really well
established roots here's two good
examples
of some roots that are really kind of
coming off with those secondary
offshoots kind of ready to be clinging
to soil
we've got our pot kind of prepped with a
little bit of spag here
on the inside of this pot and then what
we're going to do is just take a little
bit of the sphagnum here the sphagnum
moss
we're going to very carefully just kind
of wrap around
these roots kind of in a burrito style
to grow
and help them establish
and we can just pop him right here and
just really kind of tuck them in
and then next in the process we are
going to top soil so this is how they're
going to get their
nutrients additional nutrients because
there's already a little bit in this bag
though go ahead and
put a little spoon of some soil and then
we're going to
actually top it again with soil that has
a little bit more perlite
oh it looks good that looks like cookies
and cream
that soil matter and it does yeah yeah
water hem just a little light drink so
the next thing we're going to do is
we're going to place this plant kind of
in its next kind of temporary home for
it to establish a little bit longer
we have a plant box here full of
things that we did earlier today we have
some varicosum
and some campus stratums and
so this little guy is just going to tuck
in right here
and we do this in such a way that we
have a spag and we have a perlite
mixture that kind of helps house these
plants
they get up really justled sometimes
when we move bins in and out to check on
them
or relocate them around the warehouse so
we found this system of just keeping
them nice and secure so when we move it
around
they're contained and safe not flying
all over the place
that happens i have like 10 front boxes
at my house i have a
same issue our goal here is healthy
happy plants
i love that you guys already know how
much i love prop boxes i talk about them
all the time but
it just holds in humidity and it makes
them so much happier like it really is
just the cherry on top for plant growth
for some healthy plant girl
so right okay then the plants will kind
of sit in these propagation boxes
under the grow lights for a few weeks
until
they mature a little bit and they get
more mature root systems as well
employees will walk around and check the
plants every week or two
once they find one that's ready to be
listed they'll pull it from the bin
and it'll continue its journey to be
photographed
i don't know where i'm going
hi olivia hi we take this
then once the plant is pulled from the
propagation boxes we'll bring it over to
the station to be photographed this is
ashley one of botanica's photographers
and she's going thank you worker magic
over here
we ironically just use an iphone 12 so
really yeah
so all the pictures are done on the
newest version of the iphone so
it's very streamlined and easy and we
just get in there
take a couple pictures of them we got
these fancy handy dandy rulers now
to show size of the lovely plant that
everyone gets
take some glamorous photos in there
and then it goes on our etsy page wow
these boxes though
that photography skills they're out here
great so then do you post the actual
plant
yes so then i will then go straight to
the etsy app
from here and we can add them in and
with all of our other wonderful things
for sale online
yeah and of course that link will be in
the description box they'll be
everywhere basically
okay so this is the plant that was just
photographed obviously it hasn't like
sold
but once it's listed they'll put it in a
bin
with the date it was listed and then
it'll sit there until it sells and then
from that point like what kind of so
from that point this plant gets pulled
from one of these bins
and it'll actually get sent to our
shipping department which is just in the
following room
and they will box it up and send it out
to its forever home yeah and you were
saying they have skus
yes every plant every specific plant has
a skew matched to
the actual post and invoice for that
plant so
when a customer purchases one of our
plants they get the specific plant that
was posted which
i love that well and if you're a big
plant lover like
probably both of us are we really love
our plants and we love
every single characteristic about those
plants yeah so we want to know that that
is the plant that
we purchased you can give them a hug if
you want to
okay okay
now we're in their shipping station and
this is isadora she's actually the one
that came up with their like
shipping methods yeah she's gonna show
you the whole process of getting these
plants
sent out to your home safely i take a
plant like this
all i do is make sure that it's safe and
secure
make sure it's well insulated with the
polyfill then wrap the bag around it
make sure everything's tight
i've been doing this for two years
almost staying off
so do you think you've how many
plants do you think you've packaged
i can't count i usually like wrap
30 to 40 plants a day oh wow
and that's just counting orders yeah
individual plants
i don't know how much how many plants do
you think you packaged that ended up at
our house
i don't know how much but i know you
guys ordered quite a lot
and there we go and i put a care slip in
and then put it over here for my mom to
box it
uh yeah so for every order we check we
check each city individually
oh wow before they before they go out we
make sure whether or not they need
augmentation or not so we do
heat packs nothing or ice packs so
there's a freezer over there where we
have different sizes of ice caps
for each order so how hot would it be
for you to add an ice pack
it begins at 90. 90. okay and then how
cold for a heat pack
um we start heat packs at depends on
where they're going what kind of plant
it is so if it's like a philodendron or
something that is more sturdy we won't
use a heat pack until it's
probably 65 and below oh wow if it's a
begonia
and we know it's more you know going to
be more sensitive and we need to keep
that terrarium environment up in
the packaging on the way there then
we'll add a heat pack
like 68. wow highly customized
[Music]
