hello everybody welcome back to my
channel today I'd like to talk to you
about something that loads we have been
requesting and that is being published
being published in the magazine I know
loads of you have lots of questions
about it I have been receiving loads of
messages from you asking how do you get
published how do you get noticed how do
you get in contact with magazines and so
on so I'd like to talk to you about it
today
so first when I started photography back
in 2013 it was my first ever client
shoot I did take some photos of my model
friends or like girls who wanted to be
models and so on and it was nice but it
wasn't where I wanted it to be I came
from a background where I would be on
the photo blog it was like a polish web
site that I would like follow and it was
more like a kind of porcius photography
rather than editorial and it was a very
long process for me to learn how a
tutorial work and how to shoot them
properly
I didn't realize for years that you know
shooting a fashion editorial it's more
about the clothes than about the model's
face
of course it is all as equally important
but you do have to keep in mind how the
clothes look so that's kind of something
that I took me ages to realize and took
me ages to learn how to shoot in the way
that the clothes or the jewelry or
whatever is shown in the best way
possible using the model and using my
team rather than having the model as a
focal point so I think that's one of the
first kind of most important things you
guys have to realize that shooting
portrait and shooting editorial are like
two completely different stories there
is no comparison so think it's important
to realize that when you get into
fashion tutorial and you want to submit
to magazines there are certain
requirements for the magazines if you
want them to accept your submission you
know the clothes have to be in the
stores it has to be quite recent usually
I think the clothes the shoot has to be
published within four weeks of you
shooting it to make sure that the
clothes are still in the store and they
are still available so this is
definitely one
things you have to keep in mind new
season that's another thing so if you're
let's say getting into from January up
to around June you're looking at
spring/summer from June onwards you're
looking for autumn winter so there's
lots of stores that are not going to
lend you clothes that are spring/summer
if you're shooting for a magazine that's
coming out in autumn winter because they
know that it's not going to be in the
stores another thing that is really
important is that a sheet that you're
submitting to a printed magazine must be
unpublished it's the same case I think
with a lot of online magazines but it's
definitely very strict with printed
magazines it has to be unpublished
usually behind the scenes has to be very
very minimal so you are not allowed to
put four locks on Instagram and so on
because that kind of defeats the purpose
you know the magazine wants to be the
first to show you the outfit usually the
magazines ask for at least eight looks
they're asking for one double page image
that they can put at the front of the
magazine usually and then the rest of it
is in portrait format I've been getting
a lot of questions of how to get into
the magazines so when it comes to
submissions especially at the beginning
you know when you just start out and you
just want to get something published
it's always a good way to just try and
look for the editors email and these are
the fashion editor or even the picture
editor are some of the newspapers have
and just submitting to them this way or
even you know sending them an email and
being like hey you know this is my name
this is my portfolio and just introduce
yourself even if you don't have anything
to show maybe you know send your email
introduce yourself tell them you know
that you would love to do a shoot for
them maybe say that there are a few
themes you have in mind it's always very
helpful to maybe have a few mood boards
prepared you know kind of to show to
show them what you have in mind and they
will tell you if that's something that
they are planning for is that something
that they have space for in the
magazines they will tell you the dates
and so on in general I find that
editorials don't pay great so don't
expect a lot of cash for your work you
know usually it's the lowest comparing
to look books and comparing to other
commercial jobs in general I think
editorials should be shot
mostly for your book and not for the
money if it makes sense because that's
usually the way it is and you know there
is no point in arguing about it it's
like that around world that's just the
way it is in general printed magazines
don't pay great but saying that I most
definitely think you should be paid for
your work obviously when you're starting
I'm not saying you should never give
anything for free because at the
beginning when you're trying to get in
and it is very difficult to get in and
people are going to be looking for loads
of stuff for you for me for free and I
feel like you have to do that once or
twice or three times it happens I'm not
going to lie I've done it I think
everybody done it at some point where
they gave their submission for free to a
magazine because it was a good
opportunity but saying that a it has to
be a good opportunity be it kind of
happen all the time so if you give
something to somebody for free you
should expect them to at least book you
for another editorial that is paid even
if it's minimal pay you should expect
something in the return long run you
know it's easy to get caught into giving
something to somebody for free and then
never receiving payment because they get
used to you giving it to them for free
that's one of the reasons why I don't
want to submit the online magazines
because unfortunately a lot of them
expect you to submit for free or they
are not just not giving you enough money
I came across this magazine they liked a
bunch of my photos there were a beauty
magazine and they said in the
description that they are offering a
hundred dollars for a cover sheet and
they made it sound like it was an
amazing opportunity and unfortunately
it's not a hundred dollars does not
cover any costs whatsoever it doesn't
cover the model costs it doesn't cover
the photographer it doesn't cover the
studio especially for a beauty shoot
which you have to use the studio for
every time it will barely cover lunch if
you're lucky if you're living somewhere
where the food is relatively inexpensive
it's just not good enough and for them
to be wrapping it up and to making it
into this massive opportunity it's just
a really really shitty thing that a lot
of magazines do I think they're working
or they're using the
that loads of young people are going to
do a lot of things to get into those
those magazines and they are willing to
you know sacrifice the payment or you
know pay for you themselves
I've heard of magazines who actually ask
you to pay for a submission which is
absolutely shocking I know Institute
magazine is one of them there is a few
other ones and for me it's just a
disgrace I don't think you should ever
pay to be published in the magazine
especially if you put in all the work
and all the money and to it it's just
not respecting your work it's not
respecting your time and this is not the
way the industry works you are giving
them content so they could provide you
with some sort of payment it should not
be the other way around where you have
to pay for the submission and you have
to you know do all the other crazy stuff
you don't usually get great response
from online magazines the clients don't
usually see it as much and they don't
really care because it doesn't affect
their sales so I just don't think it's
worth your time and effort and it's
definitely not worth paying money for it
I think it's just all about knowing your
market around you in the country that
you're in I think it's about trying to
get to know the editors you know kind of
submitting to them even if you have a
shoot that you really like just you know
put a little contact sheet together or
or attach a few of your favorite images
and you know hit them up and be like hey
you know this is what I've done with my
team I really love it I think you would
like it too would you please have a look
at it
and you know sometimes they reply
sometimes they don't you know a lot of
the magazines won't reply to you but
saying that it's still worth trying
because there is always some that
somebody that will possibly take your
shoot so like the nice and glossy kind
of magazine are always amazing and
they're on the Shelf much longer because
they are usually on the shelf for a
month then you get a chance to shoot
covers which is also so amazing you know
there's no better feeling than going
into the shop and grabbing the magazine
and seeing your work on the cover and
you're so proud we don't anybody like
seven magazines and they're like you
just bought seven of the same magazines
what's wrong with you finally I just
want to have a little chat about what to
expect when you are commissioned by
magazine so basically let's say you
created a mood board you mailed the
editor they liked the idea they want to
Commission you and they obviously want
to pay you because don't ever get
magazines to Commission you and not pay
for the job if you're submitting a shoot
and they want to take it it's a bit of a
different situation because they might
want to take it they might not so they
might have the budget and they might not
so it's okay sometimes to give it to
them for free but if somebody approaches
you with a job then it's supposed to be
paid usually if you are commissioned
make sure it's a quote for you know
studio fees if there are some you know
there's no reason you should be covering
the studio by yourself you should not be
paying for lunch for the team or the
team shouldn't have to pay for lunch for
themselves the editor should cover your
food money or at least you know coffees
or something there should be some sort
of a contribution because if they are
hiring you for full day it should be a
standard for them to feed you at the
same time so remember that free food
awesome
so in general you just shouldn't be
spending anything like you know like
parking travel costs all that kind of
stuff it should be covered by the
magazine okay so once the shoot happened
you know you have your amount of looks
the way I usually work is I create a
contact sheet with numbers of the
folders underneath and then I we
transfer it or Dropbox it to the editor
so they can pick their favorites once
they come back to you with their
selection you go ahead and you do your
Photoshop work on our stuff if you're
not sure about what kind of retouching
do they want it's always better to maybe
retouch one photo send it to them and be
like is this okay with you is that kind
of style okay because sometimes
magazines want to go for a very
minimalistic look or very clean look and
so on so just keep that in mind so it's
easier to just send them one and get the
feedback from them rather than having to
redo twelve images that you've done and
they're not really happy with so keep
that in mind as well and I want to
export my images I usually export them
from Lightroom but it's the same with
Photoshop you have to save a 300 DP
because that's the usual standard for
print I always send them to them full
res and then they resize it whichever
way they want or whatever layout they
want and I don't really bother with that
then I get the stylus to send the team
credits and to sense the clothing
credits
sometimes the magazines ask you for
shoot names but usually to be honest
they come up with them themselves again
don't let magazines abuse you don't let
them use the fact that you're not
published and that you want to be
published because it is not worth it
especially for online magazines I find
with print you have some power you know
you can get certain shots and people
will love it but most of the time it's
just not worth the hassle so you're
better off the climbing and publishing
you know publish it on your Instagram
and just be happy with that rather than
trying to publish something you know no
matter what and then being screwed over
by the magazine because it's just not
worth it and they're not going to
respect you as an artist and they are
not going to hire you to do a paid job
they're just going to use you use the
photos you took and use your work for
free as long as you provided to them and
then they're going to find somebody
whose work they like and they want to
pay them for it so unfortunately that's
a very harsh truth but that's the way it
is so always remember to respect your
work always remember to keep that in
mind
one shooting and good luck that's all I
will say it's a tricky business you have
to be patient you have to work hard but
I promise it will pay off one day I hope
