hi I'm Robert Estrin this is living
pianist calm your online piano store the
question is should you lock your piano
it's a funny thing we've been selling
pianos for years and you might notice
that pianos have a little keyhole on
them and oftentimes when we sell
restored vintage pianos people say oh do
you have the key I'm not talking about
the 88 keys you play but they want the
key for the lock so the question is
should you lock your piano well you
might think that there are some times
that it would be really important to
lock to the piano for example let's see
you have a piano in a school or a church
and you're worried that people will
abuse the instrument and so you want to
lock it to prevent any damage well the
fact of the matter is the locks that are
built into pianos are not very robust
and they're easily jimmied open so it
really does not protect your piano in a
situation like that
now what about at home you have kids
banging on the piano you're afraid that
they're gonna break the piano what's a
funny thing also there because you know
that kids even if they use their fists
on the piano they're not going to damage
it because you figure when a concert
pianist is playing a piano the energy
they exert
[Music]
the energy is much greater than any
child could do even with their fists
you're not going to damage your piano by
doing that so really locking it is
pointless for that reason now there
might be one good reason if the sound is
driving your nuts and you can't get your
kids to use their fingers on the piano
appropriately then maybe there's a good
reason to lock it otherwise I think
pianos should be remain open for people
to play I can't tell you how frustrating
it is for me if I'm on vacation and I
find a piano somewhere like oh my gosh I
make a beeline for it and then it's
locked
I am always heartbroken I think pianos
are meant to be played
I wonder how all of you feel about this
and do you lock your piano you can put
the comments in and we can have more
discussions about this and if you like
the videos you might want to subscribe
and ring the bells so you'll get
notifications sharing your social
network anything to spread the joy of
piano playing right alright thanks for
