hi I'm Kendra hall and I'm the public
information specialist the city of to
Thon's environmental and General
Services Department today we're going to
talk batteries now remember never throw
any battery into your blue pin instead
bring on down a household hazardous
waste and will properly recycle them the
regular alkaline batteries that people
used to recycle they go into the trash
now recyclable batteries are always
going to be the lithium ions and
rechargeables those batteries when they
get crushed they can get hot they can
start a fire so they really don't want
them in the landfill they can be
recycled we individually tape them up
and send them off to a battery recycling
center and they
are able to reuse the chemicals they
found to fires at the landfill that were
traced back to these lithium-ion
batteries for RC cars toys you know and
when they get crushed they get hot and
can start a fire and then when you get
them wet they so it's really kind of
dangerous thing a few trash trucks in
town have lit up because you know they
had those in them a lot of times folks
bring in a mixture in bags or boxes of
button batteries rechargeable batteries
and alkaline batteries and they dump
them all together as battery recycling
and we would really it'd be really
helpful if people would separate those
at home and bring them in separate it
saves the technicians a lot of time if
that stuff comes in in the separated
categories now remember alkaline
batteries those are just finding your
trash bin but lithium batteries car
batteries button batteries or
rechargeable batteries those belong here
at household hazardous waste to see more
on what we collect here in this program
