what should you pack for costa rica
stay tuned we're about to go through
five of the things that have really come
in handy on this trip that if i was
coming back i would definitely have
those five things again and also a
couple of tips a couple of things you
can leave behind and some tips for your
packing let's get into it
okay so one of the first things i
recommend getting is some like
lightweight sort of summer hiking pants
i got these ones from patagonia they
were the quandary pants
and i'll uh leave a link i'll put a
photo to show you but uh
they
were number one worth every cent but
number two they came in handy so much
because i was worried i would overheat
too much because they're long pants
right but all i did was i just rolled up
to you know the ankle a little bit and
since the fabric is so light
number one they stopped me getting a
pair of shorts tan but number two when i
was doing the waterfall tour and the
snorkeling tour and things like that
i could walk around with hiking in the
jungle i'm not getting my legs all
scratched up i'm so i'm covered and
preventing uh bug bites as much as
possible
but then
it wasn't like i was overheating from
these long pants because they were so
light they were really breezy lots of
air flowing through and i felt super
cool in them so that was great that as
soon as i started wearing them and i was
on those tours i was like oh my gosh i
have protection from the sun from the
bugs and i'm still like nice and light
they were actually a lot less hot than
my jeans shorts that i'm wearing right
now so if you can get a pair of these or
some sort of like summer hiking pants
like these
they're so lightweight and just worth
every cent i think because they came in
handy
so much the second thing i definitely
recommend packing is some sort of
lightweight towel i just have this one i
think it's just like a light cotton
towel from
i don't know i think i got it when i was
traveling somewhere but you could also
get like an even smaller and lighter
microfiber towel or something like that
and this is just for your tours like the
waterfall tours things like that uh
snorkeling tours where you're going to
be getting wet and need to dry off and
also if you're just having days at the
beach and stuff like that
so most of your hotels will
have beach towels that you can borrow
and take but the ones they're giving you
are like a big bulky beach towel so then
you have to carry that around all day
and i found it to be way easier to just
roll this up and have this in my little
backpack and take it everywhere with me
and just a lot less hassle less things
to carry less things to be weighed down
by
so it was definitely worth packing and
it doesn't really
only travel here with the backpack it
doesn't really take up much weight or
space in your backpack the next thing
that was surprisingly amazing and now if
i was coming back here i'd definitely
bring it again is a dry bag i got this
one from amazon and like everything if
you want links to find out more
information like just check the
description because it'll be there but
yeah i got this one from amazon it was
like 20 or something and again worth
every cent and it's come in handy a lot
because
one thing about visiting costa rica i
feel like you need stuff
that allows for versatility
like versatility with the elements
because it could be hot and then it
could just start raining so you want
stuff that can uh be a little bit
waterproof and you know and go between
those two
uh weather situations
but then also versatility
for just your adventures you might be
just walking around town but then you
might be hitting the beach like you want
stuff that can be adaptable to all the
different adventures you'll be doing and
then the climate and this has done that
so like going on a tour
if uh we were on the boat and there's
waves splashing in or whatever i'm not
worried about myself getting wet or if
we're going in waterfalls and stuff like
i could keep everything dry or if i was
out walking around and then it's raining
this everything's protected everything's
always dry i didn't use my regular
backpack for that reason because it just
if it starts raining i'm screwed i'm on
the snorkel tour and then everything
gets wet in the boat i'm screwed so this
has been great
it's really easy to use i got the 10
liter by the way i don't think you
really need bigger than that as long as
you're a light packer but uh because you
don't really need to take that much
stuff out with you during the day
but yeah this has been like the perfect
size
and so you just pack where you leave a
little bit of space at the top to
squeeze the air out and then roll this
down
and then you just uh clip it in
like so
and now your stuff is waterproof and you
can go out you can be out adventuring
all day and you know whatever happens in
that day whatever adventures you do your
stuff is covered so
absolutely recommend just twenty dollars
get one of those keep yourself dry
now these i actually stole slash
borrowed from my husband uh but these
are luna sandals
now any sort of sandals will probably be
fine but i can only vouch for these
because they're the only ones i've used
and i know that he said they were so
amazing for hiking for so long and i was
always like
nah man they don't beat hiking shoes
like
i just uh
i'm eating my words now because they are
amazing and especially in the whole
weather because like i haven't really
wanted to wear shoes at all because it's
so hot and then i really didn't want
that ankle tan either
but these have just been great for
walking around they're nice and sturdy
so even when we're hiking to the
waterfalls and stuff like i wasn't
slipping everywhere like i would if i
just wore flip-flops i had some grip on
them and just like a nice amount of
sturdiness in this so my foot wasn't
slipping around everywhere
and they're actually really comfortable
and just
made all the hiking uh very easy my feet
got wet walking through water my feet
got wet walking at the beach wherever we
were on any of the tours and it really
didn't matter like
again i really think with costa rica
it's about adapting to different
scenarios and like versatility
and these definitely had that so if you
can get a pair of luna sandals or some
sort of sandals like this
the lunar ones are really great and very
stable when you're hiking but even if
you will be wearing shoes i also like
the new balance minimus shoes which was
the ones i usually wear for sort of wet
adventures where they're gonna get
soaked because uh they just are also
lightweight they're a sneaker but
they're lightweight so they dry easily
but i think i'll be buying a pair of
these now because they're really good
okay so the last of the top five things
that have come in most handy and
prepared me well for costa rica has been
a gopro now
this again when we're talking about
versatility the gopro really can do any
everything it can give you the videos
the photos and it can be underwater it
can be your selfies and it can be in uh
on land like it it does everything if it
starts raining it's not going to matter
because it's waterproof you know if you
drop it while you're hiking or something
it's not going to matter because it's
it's pretty hard to break a gopro
so i've been using mine every day now i
brought my big camera and i've barely
used it just because
going out during the day number one i
don't want to attract a lot of attention
that's been one thing but the more
important thing has been the weather's a
little bit unpredictable it's really
high humidity even if it's not raining
you're wet like it feels like you've
been walking in the rain
so it's just like
that one's a little bit more fragile and
not as adaptable if it starts raining
and things like that it can't go with
the flow as easily as a gopro can so
i've been using gopro most of the time
the only thing it's it's really uh not
as good at is if i'm
something's far away and i want to get
like a nice close-up of that the gopro
is not the one
but for those reasons i've been using my
phone like for those moments so i mean
that's just my experience but i've been
using gopro a lot since i've been here
and much more than i usually do and much
more than my
proper like big camera
and i've been using
these two selfie sticks the most this is
the one i pretty much always use it's a
gopro shorty and i like this one because
it's compact i fit it in my purse
but then it extends out into the tripod
so that's you know just fun for taking
different selfies and then on tours and
things where
anything in the water and then on tours
where i needed it strapped to my hand
i've been using this one it's just a
floaty one so if i drop it it'll float
as well so
those two have been the
the ones i've been using on this trip
but you could really just use one or the
other
and then if you will just be using your
phone
i recommend just getting like a
lifeproof case and then if it rains or
you drop it in the pool or something
like that it won't matter now actually i
said five but i have uh one last one and
that is a waterproof jacket i have this
one from patagonia which
i've had since 2016 and it's still going
strong there's like no wear and tear in
the fabric or anything so if you're
wondering is it worth it you know like i
did recommend the patagonia pants this
is stuff that you can have for years and
years and years and the quality is so
good uh compared to if you buy like a
fast fashion version and then you have
to replace it in a couple of months you
know it ends up being more expensive in
the long run that way
but
this so i have it's a super lightweight
just waterproof windproof jacket
and i haven't actually had to use it too
much yet because it hasn't rained too
heavily when i've been out but i've
taken it with me every day and i know
that i'm ready if it starts raining i
just chuck that on and i'm protected and
i don't have to carry around like a
bulky umbrella or anything like that i
mean you could just use like a travel
poncho also but i i like my jacket it's
always served me well and been a good
really good investment
and also again like everything you can
kind of see it's very small very minimal
this weighs nothing you know it doesn't
take up a lot of weight and you can roll
it up really tiny in your backpack so it
doesn't take up a lot of space either so
now i do just want to share a couple of
tips for your packing to hopefully make
it a little bit easier so one thing i've
noticed since being here is i am always
sweaty always hot or my clothes are
getting wet really fast because of
either sweat or going to the beach or
whatever
so i would recommend
packing like just slightly more than you
would usually pack uh just so that you
have some change of clothes options
because i feel like my clothes are
getting dirtier faster than on many
other trips so that's one thing
or if you
have access or you want to go to a
laundromat like do just be prepared to
do laundry maybe more than you would in
other places and then the other thing i
would say is you can leave
all your hair styling your heavy makeup
stuff leave it at home you don't need it
here in costa rica because uh well at
least not in puerto viejo where i am
because it's very
much too hot to be doing all that anyway
and then the second you walk outside
your head's going to frizz up you're
going to sweat off your makeup it's
really just not necessary it's a very
casual vibe you can just have some
tinted moisturizer and that's all you
need on your face and then
your hair is like going to be frizzy and
maybe up in a top knot or something half
the time and that's okay too that's just
like
that's the normal around here so you
really don't need to
put too much effort into your beauty
stuff when you come here you're gonna
look great with just natural vibes and
always dewy skin so that's it that's a
few things that i really wanted to share
because they've come in handy so much
and i think i would have had not as good
of a time if i didn't have these things
so hopefully that helps when you're
packing for your own trip to costa rica
