welcome back to gma 3 what you need to
know our dr
jen is in boston and what are we talking
about today jen
um you guys new guidelines put forth by
the u.s preventive service task force
on excessive weight gain during
pregnancy and this time
what's new about these recommendations
they're actually putting the onus of
responsibility on the health care
professional to counsel women who are
pregnant or ideally
about to be pregnant about the risks
associated with
excessive weight gain so very important
question for
a normal weight woman whose normal
weight before she gets pregnant
the the healthy or recommended weight
gain should be 25 to 35 pounds
if a woman goes into pregnancy
overweight or
obese which believe it or not is 50
percent
of women who are pregnant then the
recommendations are for only 15 to 25
pounds because we know
that too much weight gain during
pregnancy is not good for the mom it's
not good for the baby it's associated
with
increased risk of c-section and pre-term
delivery among other things
here's the thing though as an
obstetrician and a nutritionist it's
nice to make these recommendations but
unfortunately most health care providers
don't have the training to be able to
really help counsel women so it's really
kind of
a call to action for all of us to learn
as much as we can about nutrition and
dietary counseling so that we can help
these women
uh during this really important time in
their lives were there any
recommendations that were made
as to what women can do to keep their
weight at a certain place
no and that's the hard thing and i will
tell you that after having delivered
over 1500
babies uh too often the focus is on the
baby and not the mom and hopefully these
recommendations will change that
