it's easy we have a database called the
motor insurers database and that lists
every single car insurance policy in
Britain there are thousands of roadside
cameras in Britain which have number
plate recognition technology every time
a car goes past one of them the number
plate is red and it's checked against
the database if there's no insurance
policy in force then the nearest patrol
car is told about it we can just sit in
a lay-by waiting for a victim to come
along and then we stop the car search it
impound it and check out all the
occupants it's surprising how often we
discover other crimes whilst we're doing
this the owner then has 14 days to
reclaim the car which involves getting
it properly insured which isn't easy
since most insurance companies won't
touch an impounded car with a bargepole
if it isn't claimed it's sent to the
crusher or sold at auction either way
the owner gets nothing back for it now
our favorite hunting grounds are roads
with fairly slow-moving traffic because
it's easier for us to pull a car over
safely under those conditions but we can
still pull cars over our motorways too
if we want to most police patrol cars
and a lot of unmarked cars are equipped
with automatic number plate recognition
cameras so if the roadside ones don't
catch the offenders a mobile one will
these cameras don't just capture
uninsured drivers they can tell us if a
car has been stolen or has false number
plates - they can even alert us if the
plates have been cloned off another car
which is in another part of the country
in 2016 more than 40
five thousand cars were impounded twenty
thousand nearly half of them were either
crushed and sold for scrap are sold off
at auction a nice boost for police funds
but a disaster for the owners so getting
away with driving whilst uninsured is
pretty well impossible now best get a
policy as soon as possible
