step on how to enable USB support in
virtualbox virtualbox is a powerful
virtualization software that allows you
to run multiple operating systems on
your computer simultaneously however
sometimes you will find that USB support
is disabled or not working so it will
show you how to enable it let's get
started
before we dive into the process let's
briefly discuss USB support in
virtualbox when USB support is enabled
you can connect to USB devices such as
flash drives external hard drives or
even USB printers to your virtual
machine this enables seamless data
transfer and utilization of USB
peripherals within the virtual
environment
the first step is to ensure that you
have the virtualbox extension pack
installed this pack provides additional
functionalities and includes the
necessary USB drivers first check the
version of virtual box you running the
extension you download should be for the
version of virtualbox you running
if you are on Ubuntu or Linux updating
to the latest version if the latest
version is not in the repositories is
tricky just download the extension for
the current version you are running on
Windows it is straightforward just
upgrade to the latest version and
download the latest extension pack
since I'm on Ubuntu and I'm not running
the latest version I will just search
for the extension for the version I'm
running
locate and select the extension pack
file you downloaded earlier review the
license terms and click install to
proceed virtualbox will prompt you to
enter your administrator password enter
it and click OK read and accept the
license agreement by clicking I agree
the extension pack will now install wait
for the process to complete
with the extension pack installed let's
move on to enabling USB support in
virtualbox select the virtual machine
for which you want to enable USB support
click on the settings button in the
toolbar or right click on the virtual
machine and choose settings in the
settings window navigate to the USB tab
check the box that says enable USB
controller shoot
if the settings are disabled power off
your virtual machine if it is on then
restart it
in the settings window navigate to the
USB tab check the box that says enable
USB controller choose the USB version
you want to use if you're unsure select
USB 2.0 as it provides good
compatibility click on the add new USB
filter icon a blue USB plug with a green
plus sign a new dialog box will appear
shown the list of available USB devices
if it does not show any devices and you
are on Linux add the user you are using
to the virtualbox user group if you are
on windows power off a virtual machine
close the virtual box then right click
on the virtual box icon and run the
application as administrator
am audio Ubuntu so I will add the user
to the virtual box group using some
commands
once you are done log off and then log
back in on your physical machine
let us now try again as sure now it is
working we can now connect our USB
devices to our virtual machine remember
on a Windows machine just run the
application as administrator if the
devices do not show up
when you now power up the virtual
machine it will recognize your USB
device

USB devices within your virtual machines
