first of all I want to congratulate you
on your pregnancy that is so exciting
for you and your family and you asked a
really good question what can you do to
make sure that your pregnancy is going
well until you're able to go see a
doctor now your first OB appointment
should happen before you get to 13 weeks
of pregnancy and you should plan on at
least 13 appointments over the course of
your pregnancy
most doctors offices will schedule that
first appointment sometime between 8 and
12 weeks depending on your pregnancy
history or any complications that you
may have had in the past
or are currently experiencing up until
this point all you can do is watch and
wait if you start to cramp or have
bleeding or you have any concerns then
call your doctor's office and they can
determine if an appointment is warranted
sooner than previously scheduled but
generally speaking they just see if
thatif heard that first appointment and
they wait awhile for a few different
reasons number one
unfortunately when mothers miscarry it
frequently happens early in the
pregnancy and so they give it enough
time just to see what's going on and
make sure that she makes it that far
along the second reason is that they
can't really hear the baby's heart until
at least eight or nine weeks gestation
so they want to see you when they can
actually hear the baby's heartbeat and
once the heartbeat is heard then the
chance of miscarriage actually goes down
dramatically it's just a sign that your
baby's developing well and things are
going well now of course sometimes
things still happen but the rate of
miscarriage is is lower the farther you
get into your pregnancy in the meantime
be sure to take a prenatal vitamin with
at least 400 micrograms of folic acid in
it each day eat a healthy diet drink
plenty of water get as much rest as you
can and also exercise if you haven't
been exercising up to this point do
something mild like just start with
walking 15 to 20 minutes each day and
slowly work your way up but listen to
your body while you're exercising and if
you start to cramp or have any bleeding
or spotting stop what you're doing call
your doctor best of luck to you and if
you have any other questions in the
future feel free to ask them on our
