it's very common for people not to
recognize that a child has sustained a
concussion and part of that is because
they don't understand what a concussion
is or what can cause it many people
think that you have to lose
consciousness or hit your head to have a
concussion and neither of those is true
sports and recreation related activities
for sure lead to more concussions and
children bicycle riding is one of the
top ones hitting your head falling off a
bicycle and playground activities would
probably be the other one speaking
nationally sports related football and
soccer and hockey are our top three a
lot of times we see children who may
break a bone or have another injury and
they actually have sustained a
concussion but everyone's so focused on
the broken bone that they don't really
think about the childhood having
sustained a concussion
we don't know how under-diagnosed it is
but certainly I know personally having
children of my own I've seen it over and
over again that these children have a
concussion and we're just telling them
to shake it off get back on the field or
get back to the activity some children
may experience very minimal symptoms
initially but over time they might get
worse or they may develop new symptoms
children overall children and
adolescents require a longer time to
recover from concussion and this is
really important because a lot of times
when we put our children back into
school or activities too quickly it
prolongs the symptoms or can actually
make them worse that's why education for
the parents is so important because
they're going to be the ones seeing
their child on a day to day basis and be
able to help the professionals really
ascertain when the symptoms are
subsiding
