hi I'm Chris with Rockler tech support
today we're going to be looking at our
cedar chest lock and latch mechanism
this is a very good mechanism we sell a
lot of these customers are very
impressed by it it is a little confusing
it has a child safety feature and
occasionally we get calls from customers
who don't quite understand its operation
turns out it's very simple with most
locks when you put a key in turn it in
one direction you lock a lid or door
closed and latched and turn it the other
direction it is both unlatched and
unlocked this mechanism works a little
differently than regular locks or
latches it has a push button on the
front that moves in and out and the key
serves merely to enable that button or
disable it when you put the key into the
latch and turn it fully clockwise and
remove the key the button is free to
move fully in and out and if you look
inside the end of the mechanism here
you'll see a plate moving in and out
along with the button and it's traveling
all the way to the back and all the way
to the front there's a latch piece that
would be on your lid notice there's a
projection at one side of the latch when
you close the lid this latch will go in
and if the button is out when you do
that it'll pull right back out it's not
latched or locked if you push the button
in when you close the lid and put the
latch in and release the button it
captures this piece the lid is now
latched but unlocked you can push the
button to release it push the button to
latch it a lot of times people will do
that if they're just going to be moving
the chest or something taking it
somewhere else and they don't want it to
open and inverting lis but they don't
need to lock it the other operation of
this is when you put the key in turn it
fully counterclockwise and remove it the
button is now disabled now it still
moves a little bit but if you look
inside the end of the mechanism you'll
see the plate won't move all the way it
won't allow you to lat
if you try to close the lid the lid will
still close but you cannot latch it
that's a safe way to have it for if you
have children around they they cannot
climb in themselves and accidentally get
latched in place they can't climb in and
have their little brother or sister
latch them in place it certainly can't
be locked without the key the other mode
is to push the button in before you lock
the button you push the button in close
your lid let the button loose to latch
it it's now latched but it's still
unlocked you can push the button and lat
and open the top and then put the key in
and turn it fully counterclockwise
remove the key the latch is still stuck
in the mechanism as it should be the lid
is closed it is latched it is also
locked pushing this button has no effect
on releasing the lid
to open it of course put the key in turn
it fully counter fully clockwise again
this enables the button now push the
button the latch is released and you can
open the lid that's really all there is
to this mechanism it has three modes of
operation with the key in and turned
fully counter or fully clockwise when
you remove the key the button is enabled
you can latch the lid or you can close
the lid without latching it if you want
to lock the lid you close the lid and
latch it and then turn the key fully to
the counter clockwise direction remove
it from the lock and the lid will be
locked that's really all there is to it
