the great thing about programmable
thermostats is that they give you the
freedom to set your home's temperature
based on your own personal schedule
throughout the day imagine waking up to
the perfect temperature every morning
leaving for work knowing your thermostat
is adjusting while you're gone
arriving home without worrying about the
temperature and sleeping comfortably as
your thermostat adapts overnight making
the switch to a programmable thermostat
can also reduce your energy usage by
properly using one that has existing EPA
Energy Star settings you can save a
significant amount of money on your
heating and cooling bills and installing
a new one is simple you can learn more
about doing it yourself in the know-how
section of homedepot.com depending on
your weekly schedule there are several
types of programmable thermostats to
choose from first check to see what kind
of heating and cooling system you have
most programmable thermostats are
universal and will work with any kind
but it's good to know just in case your
first choice is a 5-1 1-day thermostat
since these allow you to program
separately for weekdays Saturdays and
Sundays they're a good choice for people
that work during the week but need a
little more flexibility on the weekends
next we have the five two day option if
you work during the week and our home on
the weekends this thermostat allows you
to separately program for those two time
periods
finally there are seven-day thermostats
now these have adjustable settings for
each individual day and are good for
people with different schedules
throughout the week most programmable
thermostats have standard default
programs find one that's Energy Star
rated for the easiest and most efficient
way to regulate your home's temperature
if you're planning on choosing your own
programming here are some basic
guidelines to follow for the summer you
can generally keep your house around 78
degrees when you're there and 82 degrees
when you're away or asleep in the winter
a common recommendation is to set your
thermostat near 70 degrees when you're
home and 62 degrees while you're away
and at night once you know the
temperatures you want and when you want
to schedule them it's time to program
them in it's a simple process and should
be similar for most thermostats but just
to be safe
we'll show you the basics of button
based controls and a touch screen
thermostat keep in mind that for most
models you should program
in both heat and cool modes separately
then just manually switch between them
based on the season for example you may
want to change to heat in the fall and
back to cool in the spring this
Honeywell thermostat has a standard
display screen in button control so it's
a good one to show you some basic
programming steps here we have the main
screen with the current day of the week
time and temperature underneath that
you'll find the system and fan schedule
and clock and more buttons let's start
with the time press clock then use the
arrow buttons to find the current time
press done to save and go back to the
main screen to program either your
heating or cooling schedules select
schedule then edit to see the weekdays
select day hit next step three times
then use the arrow buttons just like the
temperature you want you'll notice there
are four different time periods to
program for wake for the morning leave
for when you're gone during the day
return for when you come home and sleep
for overnight temperature press select
day and you can choose to either program
one day or multiple days at the same
time repeat these steps for the four
time periods of each weekday and the
weekend press done and your new program
will be saved now we'll go over how to
program a right touch screen thermostat
you can change the settings with a few
taps of your finger or a stylus pen now
here we have the main screen with a time
and day the time period the current
temperature the thermostat mode and the
target temperature to set the time make
sure the thermostat is in either heat or
cool mode press menu then touch the day
of the week area and select the current
day touch the time of day arrows until
you get to the current time hold the
arrow down to cycle through the time
faster then touch the home icon to
return to the main screen next touch
program here you can select the day and
timeslot you want to program touch the
up or down arrows until you reach the
temperature you want for that part of
the day just repeat that for each day
and timeslot you want to program if you
want to apply the same schedule to mo
dey's touch copy then touch the day you
want to add those times to touch copy
one more time and you're done this easy
process is the same for either the heat
or cool mode and if you ever want to
return to the pre-programmed Energy Star
settings simply press the EPA button for
four seconds we think you'll love the
convenience that comes along with a
programmable thermostat it's a smart
choice that will save energy and maybe
with some extra money in your pocket
more saving more doing that's the power
