hey friends welcome back to my channel
in today's video I'm going to show you
Lily the Schnauzer puppies very first
groom
[Music]
okay guys so this is Lily how cute is
she she is one of my current clients new
poppies she has two other dogs and
generally I don't take on new clients
right now but this is a situation of how
I get puppies on my schedule
so today I am starting with nails on
Lily when I am doing a puppy groom I try
to think ahead sometimes with puppies
I'm not able to get everything done so
what I try to do is get in everything I
need to get done or really want to get
done at the very beginning of the groom
before they potentially are too
overwhelmed that I can't continue some
of my top favorite tactics for grooming
a new puppy in my van are praise
patience and treats if they will take
them many dogs will not take treats for
me during The Grooming process I think
it's just because they're too nervous or
stressed out but luckily Lily is very
food motivated and was taking just her
normal kibble for me you also just seen
me let her smell and see and check out
the Dremel before it even went on her
nails I like to have the dog look over
every tool before I actually use it on
them
you can see her right here smelling the
Dremel being very curious and that's
what being a puppy is all about getting
exposed to new things in a positive way
so yes I am letting her smell the Dremel
but only in a way that's safe I'm not
going to let her rub her nose up against
it I'm watching very closely and then
here you can see taking some treats from
me next I'm getting my Clipper set up to
shave her paw pads I really wanted to
make sure I got her nails and pads done
today you can see that I just
intuitively grabbed for her paw to try
to start shaving them like I would any
other dog but then I stopped remembered
it's a puppy and I want to let her smell
and feel everything before I actually
even use the Clippers on her the
Clippers are loud they vibrate so it's a
funny feeling so I'm rubbing them on the
top of her paw giving her some treats
before I even try to actually shave her
paws now as you can see she's very
unsure which is totally fair it's a very
fine line I find with puppies both
getting them comfortable but also just
getting in there and kind of doing what
you need to do if you were holding their
paw or their leg like this and they
start to resist don't let go right away
just continue with the treats and the
praise get done what you need to get
done so that they don't learn that if
they pull away
you're going to let go right away and
they get their way so keeping that in
mind it looks like I have a very firm
grip on her leg I'm just gripping it
enough to keep it in place to keep both
her and I safe but I'm not pulling her
towards me by her leg or pulling her leg
in any way I am moving towards her and
just keeping it nice and steady now you
can see here she's not pressing herself
up against the wall as much she's
becoming a little bit more comfortable
and by the time I'm doing her pads on
the other side she's not trying to get
away from me and she's a lot more
comfortable which is absolutely amazing
that is what we're looking for
moving on to her very first bath in the
van I am mixing up some shampoo in my
squeeze bottle I am using the colloidal
oatmeal from nature Specialties which
can be bought through a Lin professional
I will leave a link down below how cute
is she I love to use just gentle
shampoos that clean well for their very
first groom even though her mom doesn't
think she has any allergies I don't like
to use anything too strong today you
will see I am using my bucket wash
method I only had one other small dog
other than her so it wasn't worth
filling up my back water tank so that is
why I'm using the squeeze bottle to
shampoo her opposed to my car wash
nozzle that works in place of the
bathing system so in the bath to keep
her safe she is attached with a alpha
biophane grooming noose to the alpha
suction cup so that keeps her from
jumping out and while I'm washing her
I'm just kind of letting her do what she
wants Jump Around whatever feels most
comfortable to her while also just
giving her lots of praise and treats
when she'll take them my top tip for
baths are to lather and rinse the dog's
body first as soon as you get a dog's
head wet they just want to start shaking
so I always do heads last so I get her
all lathered up and then we move into a
relaxing Reiki head massage
[Music]
thank you
[Music]
foreign
in that shampoo I do double shampoo on
her then a second here you'll see that
my usual bucket bathing system didn't
work out for me because it wasn't
charged usually it goes in the bucket
and comes out like a nozzle has really
great pressure but I like to plan ahead
and I always have a picture on hand so I
just did it the old-fashioned way and we
pitcher rinsed her
so now she's getting some treats after
her bath and we are going to move on to
drawing her
keeping in mind that the dryer is often
one of the scariest parts for puppies
getting groomed or any dog that's new to
grooming so I dry as thoroughly as I can
with the towel and then also use a spray
that helps with drying I like the eye
groom one and I also like the nature
specialty one as well both can be found
at Lynn professional and I will link
them down below right now I'm removing
the condenser cone on my dryer this
helps with what the dryer feels like to
the dog the air isn't as concentrated
and also it helps with the noise of the
dryer it's often the combo of the noise
and also the funny feeling that the
dryer has that scares puppies and Lily
is also wearing a happy hoodie which I
will also link down below and is one of
my must have grooming products
now if your dryer doesn't have a
condenser cone or if it has the option
to adjust the speed start with a very
low speed and work your way up you can
see here she's now refusing my treats
which often happens for dogs if they're
a little bit stressed in the van so
we're just taking it nice and slow and
I'm using as much positive praise as I
can
in a second here we're just going to
jump straight to the haircut as there
was just lots of taking my time with the
blow dryer trying to get her as
comfortable as I can with it
okay so as you can see Lily is fully
dried nice and fluffy I'm showing you
guys that I'm using a guard comb over a
30 blade on her now she is a schnauzer
puppy so for some people this could be
controversial that believe and just hand
stripping the coat or karting I do a
little bit of carding before going over
the Clippers on these type of dogs to
help with the
keep the Integrity of their fur and also
the coloring I'm not going to get into
all of that in this video but I
personally don't do hand stripping I do
Clipper work on these dogs because my
clients are looking for pet trims so on
her today she has very long leg fur but
her body is shorter than her legs so
we're just kind of evening her out today
so I'm not doing any reverse work I'm
going with the lay of the coat and
mainly taking off some length on her
legs to even her out and then I will
also do some trimming on her head and
face to get her all cleaned up
for trimming the underside of dogs as
long as they are comfortable with this
position not sore or elderly I like to
lift them up by their front legs like
this so I can get a full view of their
belly and make it nice and even you can
see when I put her down here and I'm
trying to do Clipper work she's of
course moving herself as close to the
wall as she can trying to get away which
is totally understandable so it is kind
of a fine line of how much you need to
kind of push them and encourage them to
come closer to you because we need to
get the job done but we're also trying
to teach them that grooming isn't scary
so this next part I decided to leave in
because it was kind of my bad that round
thing on the table is a space heater and
since she was trying to get away from me
she knocked it off the table now luckily
she wasn't too scared by it but I really
shouldn't be having things like that on
my table that could potentially scare a
dog that is new to grooming
so here I realized I wanted her legs a
little shorter so I'm going over them
again with a shorter guard comb but you
can see she's not pressing herself up
against the wall she kind of understands
this time around what's going on she's
more comfortable and even though it's
not her favorite she's really not trying
to get away from me as much which is
absolutely amazing moving on to some
scissor work to clean up her legs and
even her out even more when trimming
puppies you want to make sure you always
have another hand on them because
they're unpredictable they could move at
any moment get scared or spooked and
then you could accidentally cut them so
as you can see I'm holding her back in
steady with my left hand and trimming
and combing with my right
during this portion of the groom she was
very curious smelling my scissors so
keep an eye out for her little faces
when you're trimming now it's kind of
hard to see but I end up grabbing her
opposite back leg and lifting it up off
the table this is a trick to keep her
other leg stable while I'm holding the
opposite one up she's also not going to
try to lift that one up as well because
it's an awkward kind of scary position
to do so that's kind of a grooming trick
I use to trim down legs when you're
doing the opposite one
honestly Lily is doing absolutely
amazing for her grooming I was so
surprised with how comfortable she
became in the first appointment so
please know with puppies sometimes it's
not this easy going sometimes you can't
get a full groom done on them I let my
clients know that we're gonna do what we
can in the amount of time that I can I
do book extra time for puppies so I can
take my time our end goal is to get done
everything that the owners would like to
get done but sometimes that doesn't
happen you don't want to push a dog too
far that they get so overwhelmed and
over stimulated that they are going to
see their next groom as something scary
if possible have them come in for intro
Grooms where it's just a bath just nails
and slowly work your way up
unfortunately where I live that's
I mean fortunately and unfortunately
recommend that they don't grow to a
Grooming Salon or kennel or anything
until they have their second set of
shots and for most dogs that need full
haircuts by the time they have their
second set of vaccinations they're
needing a full groom so that's why it
kind of ends up being a situation where
we're trying to do everything all in one
appointment
now as you can see right now Lily is
very comfortable she's sniffing my face
giving me kisses seeing what I'm doing
on her back foot so I'm just gently
pushing her away but another option is
you could use another restraint on your
bar to keep her head on the opposite
side or I could try to use a belly band
or something like that she really wasn't
getting that much in my way that I
thought I might accidentally cut her I
was keeping my eyes open and honestly I
liked the freedom that she had because
she was feeling so comfortable sometimes
you don't want to restrict a dog so much
that that restriction causes tension in
their body and then leads to anxiety
they actually didn't get any clips of
trimming Lily's head and face all of the
angles are shot vertical because I
thought I was just going to make an
Instagram reel out of this and then
realized I had enough Clips to kind of
make a how I groom a puppy video so
since I don't have any clips of grooming
her face I am just going to verbally
explain as best as I I can how I usually
do puppies now you just have to think of
it in terms of they have never had their
face touched or manipulated in this way
and it can be very invasive for somebody
new to be up in their face trying to
trim in between their eyes holding their
head Etc so you just want to take your
time and do whatever the puppy is going
to let you again keeping in mind not to
kind of let them rule the groom
oftentimes the puppies will be scared of
having the Clippers on their head
because of the noise and the vibration
so in this appointment you may only get
to use your shears and your thinners
which is mainly what I had to do on Lily
and how I keep their head stable from
not moving is if they have a little bit
of chin fur I just lightly kind of grip
that and when they pull away I have lots
of control one last thing that I want to
mention just from personal experience
grooming puppies their very first groom
if you can as long as they've come in
and they're not matted I have found that
most owners are kind of just looking for
a cleanup they want to keep that puppy
look for as long as they can so either
trying to keep them long and fluffy or
just trimming their face a little bit
ask lots of questions about exactly how
they would like their dog to look and
that can be helpful in giving people
what they want but once again every
single first puppy groom I make sure
that the owners know that we are just
going to do what we are able to get done
in this appointment without stressing
out the dog too much
ideally we have dogs come in for small
appointments before one big grooming
session okay enough of me talking let's
get into the before and after of Lily I
am so proud of how well she did for her
very first groom
so here is Lily's before
scruffy little girl
and here is her after taking a little
snooze as you can see we left her nice
and fluffy trying to keep as much of
that puppy look as we can at the end of
the groom she was extremely tired and
then this is just a little bonus
Boomerang from the second groom I did on
her you can see in this clip that her
second groom came out much nicer she
behaved even better than the first room
which is exactly what we want and look
how much older and mature she looks as
well I just want to thank you guys so
