hi my name is suzanne grandy i am a
certified master groomer
and i like to share my passion for
grooming with you
this little dog here who's going to get
hand scissored and
i need to save some time on her because
time is important i
want to stay on schedule she's extremely
hairy
so what i'm going to do is
hand scissor her before the bath so i'm
just going to knock off enough hair
that if there is any packed in hair
underneath it'll brush out easily
and i will be able to blow dry her much
quicker
and then when i do the final scissor
work it will go
really fast so
for me i always hand scissor
before the bath if i'm knocking off
quite a bit of coat
i love the scissors i'm using their
jaguar gold
they're seven inches super sharp
a lot of times when i do this i do use
my better scissors
i know that'll make a bunch of people
scream
but
i'm gonna do it i'm gonna do it
so i do this without brushing or combing
and i never do a pre-bath brush out
well almost never
even if a dog has some matting in it
because i feel like knocking the top
half of the coat off
unlocks the mat and the bath and broke
blow dry and conditioner
helps to release the mat and then it
just comes right out
and so this table this new table i have
it's really cool because i don't have to
move i can move the dog
so i absolutely love this i can just
turn the dog whichever direction i want
to go
it's a really really really nice little
table
and it's air lift so it goes up and down
and it's just the right size for the
dogs i work on
it's like 20 by 20 inches diameter
so i just scissor in whatever final
shape i want to end up with
and then when i give her the bath and
blow dry it's going to be uneven
but it's going to take half the time
i'm so used to turning the dog that i
don't even
remember half the time that i can do
this
but it's so good for my arms because
picking up and turning the dog
all the time is hard on my arms
so just being able to keep her standing
here
and just move her where i need her it's
pretty awesome
i'm in heaven with this new table
all right i think that's enough hair
knocked off
i can actually do underneath with a four
get all that hair off underneath
so what i'm going to do for that is just
use my foreblade
just take off everything under here
everything in here
and everything inside the legs
and i can even take off here
all right you're a good girl yes you
are now we're gonna go take a bath
all right we're back with ellie she's
had her bath and blow dry
she's a little anxious
guys back a little
all right that's a good girl i know that
was
terrible yes it was absolutely
terrible i know okay you gotta stand
still
ready you stand
stay
so usually when i do a dog
i condition everybody a lot of people
don't like to
condition hand scissors but i do because
the comb slides through the brush slides
through and they smell pretty
and for me personally i always start
with the top line
because the top line is where i can
judge where i want to have everything
else
to me the top line and outline is the
most important part of the groom
you're all right ellie
when i hand scissor i think of a pattern
that i want to use
the finished look that i'm looking to
achieve
for her she's a poodle mix we don't over
stylize her she's not a bichon she
doesn't get a bichon look
she doesn't get too exaggerated of a
tuck-up
and even though she just had surgery so
she's missing here we're going to
pretend that that hair is still there
and she keeps kind of big fluffy legs so
she just she likes kind of a
simple looking not over stylized
trim
it's not really a teddy bear it's not
really a bijan
kind of a blend of
a few different looks
so while i do add a tuck up it's not
exaggerated
and somebody asked earlier why i don't
prefer
snap on combs it's because of the shape
i don't want it one
length all over i like it really short
in here
angling up a little fuller than angling
up fuller
and i like this roundness in here and
you can't really get that with a snap on
comb
or if you do you set the length one
length all over with the snap on comb
and then you go back and fill in the
different lengths
so you're still in effect still hand
scissoring
but i do use snap on combs a lot just
not on this hair
when i blow dried or i did not use a
high velocity dryer
i just use a stand dryer
another thing when i i do when i'm hand
scissoring is i do not do the feet
until last
but that's just me
personal preference
when i scissor i comb the entire side of
the dog
i don't stop and re-comb and re-comb
the reason for that is i want to scissor
the entire side of the dog before i have
to re-comb
you all right ellie
she said i don't know about that
because i did the whole underside with a
four blade i do not have to go back and
redo anything underneath it's all done
for me
she doesn't have as much neck hair as i
like
she's got a broken top knot so i'm just
going to work around that
if you're improving your hand scissoring
moving at your waist and keeping your
arm stills the
fastest way to do it instead of going
like this
you just go smooth all the way down
this is just a simple everyday pet trim
this is nothing fancy
this table is actually pink but it comes
with these little ramp well it doesn't
come with them you can buy
extra these little round cushy mats
they're kind of like a paw mat
and they're really nice they disinfect
really easy and they're really
comfortable
you can just pull it off disinfect it
grab another one and
put the dry one on the table
because i don't want her it's okay ellie
because i don't want her over
exaggerated i'm not giving her any built
out chest
and i'm not overdoing her angulation
because her owner kind of likes that
straight
full look
so when i'm scissoring the first layer
of scissoring i
create my outline i go all the way
around creating the outline
i'm getting the whole balance of the
shape i want
i'll go back around the second time
start to tighten it up and the third
time i'll finish the feet
and make sure everything's tight
but that's just my own personal
preference
and while you're working
okay it's okay really
she's like that's what you say but i
don't believe you
no i don't believe you
let's see what are we gonna do with her
face
for me personally i'd love to do a
little fusion style but her mom likes
the beard
so we have to keep the beard
yeah i have to keep the beard
these are zolida shears the curves
they're really nice
gonna figure out what i'm gonna do with
your ears
looks like i gave her kind of a teddy
bear last time
did i give you a teddy bear here
good girl
you're so cute yeah
i am
so since we're not going for a
teddy bear look and we're not going for
a bichon look we're going to split it in
the middle
and kind of make a round head and
separate it from the ears
just making it up as i go
that's the fun part about grooming mixed
breeds
no rules
right no rules
okay
i love making those little black lips
show
okay
yourself
done
so her head doesn't look too heavy i'm
dropping it down
and angling back whatever falls back
past the nose
that way she can keep some length of
beard but not be
droopy looking
since i want a teddy bear looking ear
i'm going to take some of this off
bring out that rust color
so to do that i'm holding the ear under
the chin
and combing it up and angling it
you're pretty cute yes your arm
all right
okay girl stay
so i think i found a home for the little
yorkie i was fostering
which is awesome
i'm hoping it works out
she's the cutest little thing
but she's nine years old so it's hard to
find a home for a nine-year-old yorkie
if it doesn't work out i'll just keep
her
can you get in the middle of the table
please thank you
good girl
if you notice i rarely pick up legs when
i'm scissoring them
because sometimes you can make a wrong
cut
with the leg up
and then when you put it back down
you're like oh that wasn't good
and i'm not trying to teach anybody how
to do anything i'm just
saying what i do and it's right whatever
you do that works for you is right for
you
this works for me
all right the first round of scissoring
is just about done
so
good girl
it's a good girl
oh
[Music]
korean style pet grooming this is susan
may i help you
telemarketer
don't have no time for telemarketers do
we
no
all right let's see that top line it
looks kind of wonky
he looks wonky
why are you nervous
why
i think this is her second or third time
coming to me
and she had surgery since she was here
last and sometimes that makes them a
little more nervous
they're like somebody did something bad
to me last time
and i'm just not sure
are you going to do it too
and your face is uneven
i can see it from here
so i'm purposely trying to keep a
separation here since she's not a bichon
if she were a bijan i'd bring it all
together
good girl you feeling better
are you feeling better
yeah it's okay let me get that here
you don't want that hair going in your
mouth
no that would be uncomfortable
don't mind me i always talk to the dogs
as long as they don't talk back we're
okay
all right now that the shapes where i
wanted i can pick up the legs and work
on them
because i see the outline
of where i wanted it
good girl
so
because you need a rest just you need a
vest
you need a rest you're almost done
do you have to rest now
[Music]
right now
she's like yes i must
sorry you can stand up again in a minute
good girl here we go i saw a tail wiggle
i did i saw the tail wiggle
that head still looks terrible
absolutely terrible
all right spinning around
for me one having one of the biggest
helps is having a mirror
because i can see from a different
perspective
i'm so spoiled working with a mirror
if you don't have a mirror you could
always flip your phone to camera
and watch it as you're working
and that way you can see from a
different perspective
all right time to do your feet
get you all smushed up
do
[Music]
trying to get more of a teddy bear look
on these ears
soften them up a little
this way
it's been so fun with this table because
when they do that duck and turn
like go as far as they can away you just
spin them and they're coming right back
they're like wait what
what happened i was way over there
i know i'm over here
i know some people hate it when you blow
off the table but i work alone so it
doesn't matter
it's not like i'm blowing it onto
anybody else's dogs
all right so at this stage now i'll just
spritz on some scissoring spray
re-comb the entire dog
it's okay i know i'm going fast because
i'm getting behind schedule
got another doggie to do
got another doggie
and her owner never leaves the parking
lot so
can't be behind
all right
so now that i have everything set combed
up i can just scissor the whole dog one
more time
she's like thank goodness i'm getting
tired here
that's another reason why i hurry is
because the dogs get antsy
they're ready to be done and the window
of opportunity is passed
so if i can just get in get out get it
done
get them back home everybody's happy the
owner of the dog
it's okay
i wasn't sure how they would handle the
turning of the table but
most everybody's handling it really well
i'm surprised i thought they'd be like
bracing themselves and like
what's happening oh no
but they're not they're like okay cool
we're going for red
whenever i scissor these sides i think
of a hexagon
so i take my scissors at this angle
and i lay especially with little dogs i
lay it down here
and just come up at this angle to get
the rib cage
and then i angle it up a little more
then i go straight
and then i go this way and her owner's
here so we gotta go
