[Music]
welcome back to the femire bernie's
mountain dog show if this is your first
time here my name is will i'm a canine
behaviourist and i'm the founder here at
femire canine leaders.com
this channel is dedicated to teaching
you everything you could ever dream of
knowing about the wonderful bernie's
mountain dog
and if you love them as much as we do
here at fenway start by hitting that
subscribe button and turn on the
notification bell and you'll never miss
a future bernie's mountain dog video
so then let's dive into today's video
we'll find out just how much effort and
money you'll need to put into
maintaining the luxurious
silky coat of this gentle giant now the
bernese mountain dog is a fantastic
family dog that does well in cold
climates thanks to its heritage from the
mountains of switzerland
their moderate energy levels and
affectionate nature make them relatively
easy to groom for such a large breed
they are also very trainable and willing
to please so
introducing them to grooming sessions
early on makes the process
easier on everyone when they are fully
grown so then let's dig a little bit
deeper into their coat and what you'll
need to know as you groom it
now as i mentioned earlier the bernese
mountain dog has a thick double coat
that acts as an insulation barrier
between their body and the outside
environment
like all double coated dogs they'll blow
their coat meaning shed
really heavily twice a year typically in
the spring and fall
they also have feathers which are long
hairs that extend a little bit down the
front of their legs chest and their rump
down their back legs
now i'll get into the best tools to use
in just a few minutes but know that
brushing your bernese mountain dog every
day during shedding season
and every couple of days the rest of the
year is going to be something that
you're going to need to commit to doing
while brushing you'll want to be on the
lookout for tangles especially right
below their
ears that can quickly turn into mats
brush them with a long tooth comb first
as this gets down into that double coat
and then finish with a slicker brush to
smooth and shine their outer coat
always brush in a front to back pattern
and then a top to bottom passion
frequent brushing like this will also
show exactly where they are prone to
getting the dirtiest
and where you might want to then trim
them shorter next time if you can
now one thing i need to mention here
because it's a question so many people
ask about double coated dogs like the
bernese mountain dog
is should you shave or trim the coat
very short on them
for a cleaner and easier to groom dog
absolutely not
and this goes for every double-coated
breed out there
that double coat is a crucial part of
how canines like this regulate their
temperature
and it may not grow back correctly if
you shear it that short which could
impact the dog for the rest of its life
now you can certainly trim the excess
feather in without negatively impacting
them if you don't get into their full
coat
if you're ever unsure it's always best
to take them to a groomer experience
with double coated breeds
now of course you'll need to bathe them
now and then as well just like any dog
and make sure you use a shampoo and
conditioner formulated
for the ph balance dog's needs since
it's different
than what we humans need like you do
when brushing
wash and rinse in a front to back and
top to bottom pattern
and using a wet rag on their face and be
careful not to get any water or shampoo
in their eyes
spend some extra time rinsing them
thoroughly with their thick coats so
that no residue is left behind that
could then cause irritation to their
skin
you may also want to enlist the
expertise of a groomer when it comes to
trimming the fur on their paws and
between their toe pads
typically this involves a set of
clippers and a pair of specific canine
shears
with a steady hand and a well trying
bernese mountain dog you can do this at
home too
but it never hurts to learn from a pro
or simply pay them to do it for you
hey guys if you're not already you
should be following our fenrir
rescue diaries over on femire k9
training channel
that is following my journey of working
at a rescue center
helping dogs that have been abandoned
abused given up or found as strays
and helping implement behavior
modification programs
to allow them to become perfect canine
companions that can be
rehomed to their forever homes so if
you're interested in following my
journey of how i do that
there'll be a link to that channel down
in the description box below i think
you'll really enjoy the journey but i'll
let you get back to the video you were
just watching
now depending on the activity level of
your bernie's mountain dog you may not
have to trim their nails more than a
couple of times a year
now i always suggest doing both of you a
favor and get them used to either a nail
clipper or the vibration of a nail
grinding tool
early on in their life trust me you
don't want to be struggling with a
powerful breed like this when they are
fully grown so being able to keep them
calm and relaxed
is a huge win when grooming your
bernie's mountain dog you'll also want
to make sure that you clean and check
their ears
so that they don't get any buildup of
moisture or irritations or dirt
you can use a special ear cleaning
solution but make sure to go back with a
dry cotton ball or rag to make sure no
moisture is left behind that could cause
an issue
their long coat can grow into their ears
a bit so again just keep an eye on this
every time that you're giving them an
ear up
and yet where you can stay on top of it
causing any potential issues
and other than keeping an eye on them
you'll want to have a couple of tools on
hand
go over there coach a couple every other
day and then daily when they're shed in
their coat
and that's pretty much all you're going
to need to be doing for your luxurious
beautiful burnies mounted dog to make
them
look tip top all year round i hope you
found that useful
