In this video, I will describe
how to administer RV1 rotavirus vaccine, or Rotarix.
RV1 is administered in an infant's mouth.
The oral administration route is abbreviated PO.
RV1 is a live, attenuated vaccine
that protects an infant from rotavirus infections.
The vaccine is routinely administered
as a series of two oral doses, beginning at 2 months of age.
The rotavirus vaccine schedule can be found
on the CDC Vaccines and Immunizations web page.
Before preparing or administering any vaccine,
always start with proper hand hygiene.
CDC has hand hygiene guidelines and resources
for health care personnel available online.

Remove the vaccine from the storage unit.
Rotarix must be reconstituted before administration.
Remove both the vaccine and the diluent from the box.
In addition, you will need a plastic transfer adapter
provided by the manufacturer.
Use the diluent supplied by the manufacturer.
Do not mix Rotarix with other diluents or vaccines.
Next, verify the vaccine you are preparing
matches the Standing Order or the provider's order.
Check the expiration date of the vaccine.
Verify the vaccine and diluent are correct.
Remember to check the expiration date of the diluent.
Expired vaccine or diluent should never be administered.
Shake the diluent in the oral applicator until well-mixed.
Remove the protective cap from the vaccine vial
and then push the transfer adapter
through the stopper of the vial.
Remove the protective cap from the diluent
and then connect the oral applicator
to the transfer adapter.
Push the plunger of the oral applicator
to transfer diluent into the vial of lyophilized vaccine.
Examine the vaccine to assure the suspension in the vial
appears white and cloudy.
Withdraw vaccine into the oral applicator.
Twist and remove the oral applicator.
The vaccine is ready for oral administration.
Do not use a needle with Rotarix.
This vaccine should not be injected.
Have the parent hold the infant.

Place the tip of the oral applicator
just inside the infant's mouth, toward the cheek.
Slowly push the plunger down,
administering the vaccine against the side of the cheek.
Administer all of the vaccine.
Remove the tip of the oral applicator
from the infant's mouth.
Now discard the oral applicator
into a biohazard or sharps container.
Next, document the dose in the medical record,
the Immunization Information System,
or IIS, if applicable,
and the patient's personal vaccination record.
The dose does not need to be repeated
if the infant spits up or vomits.
The infant can eat or drink
immediately after receiving the vaccine.
