hi I'm Michael pH Enza with advantage
pest control and I was posed with a
question how do I kill large red ants
well first you have to understand what a
large red ant is a large red ant is a
carpenter ant they come in all different
colors black some of them are half red
and half black some of them are brown
but they're a carpenter ant all right so
a carpenter ant let's clear up a big
misconception a carpenter ant does not
eat wood they live in wood so termites
first you have to understand what a
termite looks like a termite it doesn't
have much segmentation it almost looks
like it's a solid insect there is three
different segments you can barely see
them all right and they swarm about the
same time so you need to be able to
identify one over the other okay
also the carpenter ant will kick out
frass okay frass is there waste right
you'll find these little piles usually
you'll find them in places where you
have a little bit of rotten wood all
right so what you'll find there will be
a combination of wood chips real tiny
little bits of wood little segments of
other insects that they've eaten you'll
find some of their poo to look a little
bit like mud mixed in there so now
you've found that you have carpenter
ants all right they live inside the wood
they'll also get inside voids in the
house like inside cinder block that'll
get up in your attic underneath the
insulation and these colonies can be
really big they can a good sized colony
can go up to a hundred thousand and
establish colonies usually about 15,000
ants and then they have sub colonies all
right so these sub colonies that they're
gonna be traveling back and forth
between them and that's where you're
gonna see them moving all right so now
how do you kill them all right you're
gonna have to spray those areas where
you see the ants those little trails
okay you want to spray those trails and
let them walk back and forth across that
pesticide up underneath the eaves is a
very good place to spray that any place
where you see them whatever you do don't
use that stuff from Home Depot or
wherever that has repellents in it okay
it makes you feel like you've done a
really good job because you don't see
ants there anymore but all you've done
is repelled them off of that trail all
right now those sub colonies will go out
and create new sub colony
you want them to continue walking across
that pesticide all right you want
something that doesn't have a repellent
the other thing is baits all right baits
are excellent for any kind of ant you
get them eating the bait they take it
back they feed it to the larva the larva
then digests it and that creates the
food for the queen and for the workers
all right so you're gonna be killing off
the next generation and you're gonna
kill off the food factory and there's a
lot of really good baits out there some
of them are super safe I'm boric acid
based stuffs you know I know there's a
little more toxic so read the labels and
pick the product that works best for you
I hope this has been helpful
