hey guys it's Jake mace the vegan
athlete another gardening tip for you
guys a lot of people at my urban
gardening Arizona Facebook group they
complain a lot about ants being in their
garden and a lot of times the ants can
eat the crops the ants can eat the roots
or the ants can be on the ground and
it's not fun while you're gardening to
have ants crawling up your feet and just
biting you all day long
it makes gardening kind of stressful
what I have found in my own garden that
if you layer the woodchips over and over
again and get them to where there's
about three feet of woodchips above the
ground eventually the ants will just
exist far below the woodchips and
they'll never come up to your feet but
my friend Timmy's garden here she's got
some beautiful basil some beautiful
leeks and onions and some broccoli going
in her winter garden and she has a tip
that I'm gonna share with you guys she
has these mason jars just old mason jars
the lid on and there's three holes poked
in the top you guys see that and what
happens is she's filled the mason jar up
with cream of wheat and if I look inside
here I can see there's cream of wheat
and there's a lot of dead ants inside
here and she takes these mason jars with
the holes on him and she lay them in the
garden like little bombs just laying
right there and I just talked to her
about this and you've never seen
somebody so happy describing how ants
crawl in these holes eat the cream of
wheat and then explode afterward she was
so thrilled that she had blocked her ant
problem with a simple solution so
there's a tip for you guys cream of
wheat mason jar holes in the top put out
in your garden and I'm positive if you
guys combined this method with layering
the woodchips you would probably never
see ants again the first two years I was
gardening I had so many ant problems
they were crawling up my smile eggs I
looked like some sort of drug addict but
all these bites and wounds down my legs
and it just was very frustrating to
constantly have to deal with ants when I
was trying to have a pleasurable
experience in my garden not only that
but for some reason the ants loved my
eggplant bushes they would crawl up the
eggplant stems go into the leaves eat
the leaves and eat the eggplant
I was losing the battle once I began to
layer the woodchips the ant problem went
away because they were eating and
breaking down the woodchips underneath
combined with cream of wheat and also a
little ring of diatomaceous earth the
food grade diatomaceous earth or de
sprinkle that powder around your beds
and the ants usually won't cross it you
