hi this is fry up with another singing
tip and today I have this huge subject
of sounding raspy how do you do it
without killing your voice if you want
to find out stay tuned
some of you have asked me how to sing
raspy in a healthy way now while I don't
actually naturally have a raspy voice
and I'm actually thankful that I don't
because otherwise I wouldn't be able to
sing clean and clear crystal clear songs
which fits my thing but still I
sometimes have to sing songs that when I
try to sing them crystal clear it would
sound really funny cuz I'm tea and tea
I'm dynamite TNT and I win the fight
that's not gonna work
take it take another little piece of my
heart now baby no that might work but
it's not what everybody expects plus the
content of those songs is like like I
have a much passion it's not gonna sound
crystal clear because I'm just like ah
you know what I mean right so how do I
do that not killing myself because let's
face it if I just sound raspy and have
absolutely no control over it and just
overdo everything in order to sound
raspy I gotta be hoarse pretty quickly
and the next day and the next day after
that probably I won't be singing for a
couple of days or a week now the key to
do this in a way that you're not going
to kill yourself is by using vocal fry'
now vocal fry' is actually something
that you use on the bottom basis can do
that really well but you can also do it
on the higher notes it's this when the
Galata s-- slowly opens up but doesn't
open all the way like so ah
try holding your breath and then very
slowly with almost still the goddess
closed and I have a video about the
glottis just to let you know what that
is if you didn't watch it don't open the
glottis don't keep that passage all the
way open but just keep it closed and
just open it the tiniest bit while you
kind of imagine holding your breath I
mean the tiniest bit of air actually
goes out now you can vary the degree of
how much air comes out and how much
voice accompanies this whole thing you
can do it with hardly any voice or you
can do it with a little bit more voice
until the whole voice is there but the
thing is it feels like almost holding
your breath now the decree - how raspy
it is can vary and you can actually
adjust it now the important thing is
don't sing like this the whole time
because even this will put some strain
in your book courts and if you do this
the whole time it's not going to be good
for your vocal cords and keep in mind
some singers out there that do it all
the time well they can't help but doing
it all the time because their vocal
cords won't work any other way because
they are so strained they have been
strained for many years and that's just
the way they sing janis joplin was one
of these singers I mean she hardly could
sing at all at the end I mean it was
just a bunch of hoarseness and roughness
coming out but that was her style so you
shouldn't want to be like those singers
that actually have damaged vocal cords
you want to be able to still have a
clear and clean voice because when you
speak you want to sound normal and not
have killed your vocal cords so do it in
moderation but like I said like when
except for example when I sing ac/dc
songs with my band which I always have
to sing those songs because the guys
just can't hit the top it's just way too
high for them I mean that guy just seems
ridiculously high right I will have to
use that Oh take it take it up a little
piece of my heart now baby break it
break another little piece of my heart
now baby so I can incorporate it a
little bit but you know I'm not doing it
the whole time I'm just trying to be
careful you know don't just go take a
that's way overdone then it's rough
because I am actually overdoing it on my
vocal cords and you will be able to tell
if you sound hoarse or rough or just
this frying sound just because you're
overdoing it because you will feel that
you know it's scratchy it
you could really feel it you have to
carve probably so that's not a good
thing that's how you're gonna kill your
vocal cords over time but if you just
have use that vocal fry that ah ah yeah
and what also helps is when you think a
little bit more narrow you know if you
want to have a really clear sound on the
top you go like yeah
you open up back here you open up your
throat now when you want to sound a
little bit rough and recipe you just
leave it a little bit more closed and
just think almost like a grab a bag like
wherever mmm and then this happened so
much easier it's go like yeah okay I
guess I'll raspy now and that's not
really gonna kill your vocal chords that
quickly you can do several songs and an
evening like this and still sing those
really clear um songs now what we always
do is like we sing Highway to Hell TNT
simply the best and some more rocky
stuff and then as a closing song it's
like I have to hold my breath and then
we sing the Rose as like a goodbye song
it's like okay guys it's impossible
vocally but in order to do that I really
have to save my voice if I just sound
rough um you know by overdoing it I'm
not gonna be able to sing the Rose
afterwards no way it's gonna sound like
this some say love it is a river then
you know I won't be able to stop the
raspiness so in order to stop the rasp
in us you just have to do it technically
I hope that makes sense to you so do
practice that vocal fry' by just holding
your breath and then slowly adding a
little bit of voice a little bit of tone
a little bit of pitch try low I would
start in kind of a lower area work
myself up into the middle and then try
the top because it's it peels
differently like for me it's so much
harder when I sing on the top in the
middle to the bottom it's a little bit
easier now on the top if I wanna sing
rough I really have to make it kind of
narrow and wide so I hope these tips
helped you a little bit if you want to
sing more rock repertoire or something
more rough that where you have to sound
a little bit raspy here and there not
all the time I hope you have a wonderful
day if you like my video give it a
thumbs up and if you have not already
subscribed to my channel I have new
videos every Tuesday and Friday and then
some in between sometimes a lifetime um
don't forget always keep on singing and
always keep a song in your heart and if
you can make someone happy by singing a
song to them today please do sing that
song by
