hi this is Noel with creation of flexkom
and I have a quick tip I want to share
with After Effects users who are on a
Mac I recently brought a bad expression
that After Effects didn't like and I got
the spinning wheel of death I'm sure
you've seen it After Effects froze up
sometimes it'll fix itself if you give
it a few seconds but that was not
happening and I hadn't saved my work for
at least an hour possibly multiple hours
which is very bad and shame on me but I
was looking at forcing After Effects to
quit and losing all the work but there
is a technique for just such an
emergency which you can try and suggest
for Mac's on Windows there's another
process and you'll have to look
elsewhere for that so I've got my
spinning wheel of death here and I'm
going to open a spotlight search by
clicking command spacebar and I'll
search for the activity monitor app and
open that up After Effects will probably
be at the top of the list just look at
this PID column and remember this number
next I'll do a new search and open my
terminal app and in terminal I'll type
the line kill space then - and in
capital letters s e-g v space and then
I'll type that PID number and then you
press ENTER and that's it you should see
an alert that shows you where After
Effects saved a copy of your project so
just force quit After Effects then and
you can open up that project
now sometimes everything will work
perfectly and you can keep working where
you left off but if where you left off
is what's causing the crash then you
might get that spinning wheel of death
again as soon as the project opens if
that's the case we have one more trick
we can try just force quit after effects
and then relaunch the app this time hold
down the shift button as After Effects
is opening and that will prevent any of
the comps from opening another option if
the shift key isn't doing that job you
can just start a new project in After
Effects and then go to file and import
and import the saved project and that
has the same result then you can go to
file and project settings then click the
expressions tab and change the
expression engine to legacy now you can
open up that comp again that was causing
the problem and the spinning wheel might
stop after a few seconds if it doesn't
then you can decide if it's worth it to
delete that comp that's causing the
crash or just go back to your last saved
copy of the project I hope that helps
some of you if you like to see really
creative visual effects that push the
boundaries of what's possible in After
Effects please go check out creation
effects com there are a bunch of custom
visual effects and custom animation
templates there that you can get in
using your own projects to save time and
money
