So what causes bloating? What helps get rid of it? And when should you speak to your doctor?
I'm going to tell you all of this and more in this week's video
now we all know the feeling of being bloated when you tummy is stretched puffy and
generally being uncomfortable bloating often happens after a big weekend of eating
especially during the festive periods but if it's more than an occasional
inconvenience then you should definitely visit your doctor so they can
investigate this further but the good news is that if bloating is just an
occasional inconvenience there's various things that you can do to help prevent
it so what we're waiting for let's dive in so bloating can be caused by many
different things such as constipation excess wind food intolerance swallowing
air coeliac disease and even irritable bowel syndrome so let's run through each
one of these and learn more about them so first up we have excess wind now we
know that certain foods can increase our wind and cause bloating so for instance
beans onions sprouts broccoli cauliflower and cabbage can all increase
this so try and cook these down and also try and maintain your five a day of fruit
and veg though so I'll leave a really useful link in the description below
which should help you with this next up we have slowing air now I know it sounds
strange but it can actually make bloating worse and by the way swallowing
air doesn't mean doing this because because nobody does that so the fact is
that we all swallow air and it's usually when we're eating food so there are
things that you can do to help reduce this so for instance when you're eating
don't speak at the same time don't slump sit upright avoid fizzy drinks and when
you're chewing gum chew is your mouth shut but I'm sure you already do that
which moves us onto food intolerance now it can cause bloating when your bowels
don't empty properly and the food produces too much gas which gets trapped
now the main offenders are wheat or gluten and dairy products but we're all
different so the best advice I can give you is to keep a food diary for a few
weeks write down everything you eat right down
when you're bloating is worse and try and find the correlation and if you have
a food intolerance or you spot a correlation then start to eat less of
that food or cut it out completely and see how you get on I wouldn't recommend
that you cut out a food group entirely without speak to your doctor first for
their recommendation I'll also leave a really useful link in the description
below and more information on this which I think you may find helpful
if you get constipation it can cause bloating now there's so many things that
you can do to help get rid of it so just drinking more water eating more fiber
and doing more exercise now I did make a video on this a couple
of weeks ago with loads more tips and information on it so if you do suffer
from constipation I'd highly recommend that you watch it I'll leave a link up
here and down in the description below for you next we have coeliac disease and bloating
so coeliac disease is a common digestive disorder where the intestine can't
absorb gluten found in wheat barley and rye so when you have foods containing
gluten it causes bloating it causes abdominal pain diarrhea and even fatigue
now coeliac disease affects 1 in 100 people in the UK so it's quite common if
you think you might have it speak to your doctor said it can investigate this
further you can also try and switch to a gluten-free diet and see if it has any
benefits I've also left more information in the description below
with some really useful links and lastly we have irritable bowel syndrome now
people with IBS usually suffer with bloating more in the evening and the
reason that they're getting bloating isn't usually linked to excessive wind but
more due to the erratic movements of the bowel now if you want more information
on IBS I've left loads more in the description below for you and that's the
end of this week's video I really hope my tips help you but please remember
that if you're bloating persists or it's more than the occasional inconvenience
then please speak to your doctor so they can investigate further and rule out
anything more serious see you next week beans onions cauliflower sprouts cabbage
cauliflower I already said that one beans onions broccoli how many is there six?
beans onions broccoli cauliflower cabbage (COUNTING)
constipation food intolerance coeliac disease constipation (LAUGHTER)
this is quire hard for instance beans onions cauliflower sprouts cauliflower (LAUGHTER)
