I'm Stacie Kalani with ash the doctor a

report on average women gain 10 to 20
extra pounds over their adult lives
right into menopause and that excess
weight can lead to a host of health
problems from diabetes to strokes
that's why shedding those extra pounds
is so important particularly as we age
but weight loss is never easy and after
age 50 it can be downright challenging
live scripts Mari cartel has more when
Julie landfill hit her 50th birthday she
knew weight loss was essential to good
health but dropping even five pounds
wasn't as easy as it used to be let
alone the hundred pound goal she set for
herself land hold tried methods that
worked in the past with no luck really
and truly felt like I was not capable of
losing weight anymore land hold finally
sought help from the cedars-sinai
weight-loss Center in Los Angeles many
menopausal women share land holds
experience according to dr. Adrian UD
medical director of the weight loss
center
the doctor says aging changes our body
composition turning muscle into fat the
reason why that's important for weight
gain is that the muscles do tend to burn
more energy or more calories than fat do
and so as a result people are burning
less calories as they get older as they
age and as they go through menopause you
deem adds that menopause also changes
where women gain weight one thing that
we notice is that women tend to attract
weight or accumulate weight in their
midsection the kind of cornerstone of
weight loss is lifestyle modification
and the behavioral component the
behavior change and that's really true
for every individual and though the
program hasn't been easy for land hold
she stays focused by her changing shape
people at work have recognized that I'm
losing weight and have been very
encouraging about it you kind of walk
with your head held high

Dean thank you a pleasure to be here
what are the most common mistakes that
women make when trying to lose weight
well one of the most common mistakes we
see are increased portion sizes so when
we eat foods that are healthy for us the
portion sizes still matter a great
example is nuts or the good fats that
tend to be very good for us but they are
fat and so they are very caloric and so
it's important to remember that even
though they're healthy that the portion
sizes are important what age do women
start seeing that age-related weight
gain so weight gain tends to be variable
right but we do see that women have
weight gain at certain life changes a
great example being childbearing years
but we know that weight gain occurs as
the individual ages and this can occur
throughout the perimenopausal timeframe
how much weight gain is related to
perimenopause yeah so there have been
studies that have shown in the initial
perimenopausal period women can gain up
to about 5 pounds within the first three
years after menopause and while it's a
small number it can be significant
enough to cause cardio metabolic
abnormalities such as insulin resistance
diabetes high cholesterol what role do
hormones play in weight gain it seems to
be that estrogen is not playing that
much of a role in weight gain so there
really is no evidence to support the use
of hormone therapy for weight loss and
women certainly can achieve weight loss
following menopause as well even though
there may be changes in body composition
that make it more difficult we know
however that very modest amounts of
weight loss as little as 5 to 10% can
result in significant cardio metabolic
benefit that will result in a reduced
incidence of type 2 diabetes will
improve cholesterol levels blood
pressure in younger women for example
who are infertile about five to ten
percent of weight loss will restore
their ovulation and will help with their
fertility what are the most important
tips for women who are trying to lose
weight or maintain their weight during
menopause
the first would be to engage in a
regular regimen of physical activity
another important tip I think is
self-monitoring so oftentimes we are not
aware of the calorie intake of the foods
that we eat but by monitoring the
calories are keeping a food log even a
few times a week we can be more
accountable to what it is we're eating
and obviously something like you know
wine alcohol that's very caloric and
people might not realize that sure wine
is a great example of excess calories
for adults a typical glass of wine can
be anywhere from a hundred to a hundred
and fifty calories and if a person
drinks one or two glasses of wine a
night that can easily translate into a
weight gain of about 10 pounds over the
course of the year dr. you Dean thank
you all of your information was very
helpful so I appreciate you joining us
